to think that baby clothes sizes are huge!

Out of curiosity... when did your baby/babies grow in to their ‘newborn’ clothes?

My DS is 11 weeks old and still fits in to a handful of ‘tiny baby’ clothes. Newborn stuff is still a little baggy (and looks very cute!). ‘Up to one month’ is huge.

He was 5lbs when he was born, so quite tiny. He’s my only baby however so didn’t feel small as it’s all I knew. Now however he's still small but much bigger than a newborn!

The first thing anyone says STILL when they meet him is ‘oh my god he’s tiny!!’ which is true (but I secretly get bored of hearing it...).

What’s your experience? Anyone else find that baby clothes are massive? I guess it's so they get longer use out of them :)

Having reread the second part of your reply to me I totally get where you are coming from. DD1 was 6lbs due to me having pre-eclampsia. We had to go out and get her tiny baby clothes because newborn were massive on her. When DD2 came along she was 10lbs! However we were still able to put her in some of DD1’s tiny baby things for a few weeks! DD2 was short and very round so I’m guessing the difference is length maybe?

I have also found Boots Mini Club and Sainsburys to be very generous in sizing.

MsAwesomeDragon · 10/01/2019 19:06

It's that your baby is small. He must be very short as I always found my girls grew out of the clothes lengthways much quicker than they'd have been out of them width ways.

Neither of mine ever fitted into newborn clothes though. Dd1 was 9lb 7 and came home in 0-3 month clothes. Dd2 was 10lb10 and went straight into 3-6 month clothes (we didn't have any in the hospital bag, obviously, so cut the toes off a 0-3 month babygrow til DH could go and get a 3-6 month one from home)

GraysonCartier · 10/01/2019 19:07

@Theunreasonableone how odd. Though I went to a bf group and had a similar thing about who had gone up the most cup sizes. It was weird. I just sat there with my still very flat chest feeling awkward...

Nothisisparrick my comment may come across as weird but it’s true. One woman would say their child weighed 7lbs and then someone else would say “well mine is only 6lbs and they are still in tiny baby clothes” when it was obvious the child was about a year old and a normal weight. It honestly put me off any kind of baby classes in my area.

Theunreasonableone · 10/01/2019 19:11

Grayson people can be very strange!

fedupandlookingforchange · 10/01/2019 19:14

My 8lb 12 DS fitted newborn perfectly when he was born, I’d mainly bought 0-3 months clothes and they fitted until he was 3 months. He followed exactly the sizes until he reached 12 months where thing started lasting a bit longer. I’ve bought clothes from a wide range of stores.

Sunflowermuma · 10/01/2019 19:15

My girls have always been spot on with clothing sizes, 7"8 and 8"2 born and they always outgrow them at the right point.

randomsabreuse · 10/01/2019 19:15

My first was 6.13 and still in some mothercare newborn at 3 months, admittedly with a vest extender because they were a good fit on the shoulders. Should have had size 0 nappies but never found any.

My 2nd was 8lb at birth and never really fit newborn. Is now coming out of most 0-3 in length (still swamped for width) and still needs a size 1 nappy - was in size 0 (preemie) for about 3 weeks!

Babies are all different shapes and sizes!

elliejjtiny · 10/01/2019 19:15

Depends on the shop I think and also on the shape of your baby, and what kind of clothes they are. Vests lasted ages on my skinny dc2 but he would grow out of babygrows because he had long legs. Dc3 needs 4-5 clothes for the waist and 6-7 for the length.

ChanklyBore · 10/01/2019 21:30

My baby was 8lb 10oz when born and I’ve got a lovely picture at 6 weeks of first smiles, I know for a fact the babygro worn in the picture was a 5lb tiny baby babygro. It’s on my DD’s doll now, is how I know....

LanaLily11 · 10/01/2019 21:31

I find that The White Company sizes are ridiculous. My 10 week old now 11lb DD still fits into their ‘newborn’ sizes

yomellamoHelly · 10/01/2019 21:33

None of my 3 fitted in newborn clothes.

TakeMe2Insanity · 10/01/2019 21:35

My ds was also in size tiny baby clothes at birth (5lb 12). While it took him ages to grow into and out of newborn clothing, he grew at the same speed as his peers. So when they grew out of newborn he grew into them.

10storeylovesong · 10/01/2019 21:45

DS1 was 2lb 3oz born and wore tiny baby clothes for ages. He wore all of his clothes for ages!! DS2 was 8lb 8oz born and never really fit into newborn. DS1 is 6 next month and DS2 is 15 months. One is long and thin and one is short and chubby. They can both wear the same shorts... Sizes are bizarre!

OutPinked · 10/01/2019 21:53

Opposite problem here with my four DC! First and third were 10lbers so newborn clothes never fit at all, they went straight into 0-3 and were in 3-6 by the time they were 6 weeks old. DC2 was 9 lbs 6 and fit in newborn for about 2 weeks then was in 0-3. DC4 was tiny to me, 8lbs5. I hadn’t bothered buying newborn because the others were so big and he was predicted to be as big so it was a shock when he was small. The 0-3 clothes swamped him until he was around 3-4 weeks old then they fit fine but only for 4 weeks, by the time he was 8 weeks old he needed 3-6 month clothing! He’s now 10 weeks and about to outgrow the 3-6 month stuff Shock.

So I have the opposite issue, clothing is too small Grin.

Thewifipasswordis · 10/01/2019 21:54

Erm no. My 19m old is in 3-4yrs. He's top percentile for height and 75th for weight but even then he shouldn't be in 3-4yrs.

Clothes are not huge at all Hmm

OutPinked · 10/01/2019 21:56

Mini club by Boots are small I found. They were the only ones that didn’t swamp him when he was first born put it that way.

Oh and I do know a woman who loves to boast about how tiny her toddler DD’s are Confused. I think she likes to think of them as dainty dolls, it’s rather odd.

Thetigerwhocameto · 10/01/2019 21:59

DD is 8 months old and still in 0-3 clothing. At least we are getting the wear out of them! 😊 she was 4lb 9 when born and is now only 13lb

angelikacpickles · 10/01/2019 22:03

Never found this. My too were 7lb9oz and 8lbs and they both wore newborn for a few weeks and then 0-3. Some brands are much bigger than others. It's a while ago now but I think Next were huge and Mamas and Papas were tiny.

I am baffled that a 12lb baby could still be fitting into Tiny Baby clothes though?!?

angelikacpickles · 10/01/2019 22:03

Argh - my two^^

sar302 · 10/01/2019 22:09

Lol. Surely this depends entirely on the size of your baby? My boy was 9.5lbs at birth. He would have ripped out of the new baby stuff like The Hulk Grin

flingingmelon · 10/01/2019 22:15

As a very rough guide, UK age groups from about 1-2yrs upward jumps 6cm in length per age range. So 3-4yrs is approx 98cm, 4-5yrs is 104cm etc. It's all based on a massive sizing project done in the UK more than a decade ago.

Obviously times change and international sizes get brought into the mix, so retailers tend to move this around. H+M size large, Gap size small etc. On top of this fashion styles can be 'small fit', 'loose fit' etc etc, making life more complicated.

In my experience, anything you buy will fit perfectly for about a month, the rest of the time it's being grown into / out of.

Orangelego · 10/01/2019 22:20

Never bought newborn but wished I had. 5.6lbs and my ds was 3 months when 0-3 looked ok on him. After that he was always in same size for age kind of thing.

MoaningSickness · 10/01/2019 22:24

You have a much smaller than average baby, but you think the problem is the clothes sizes?!?

What an odd thread. I know some people expect the world to revolve around them, but really?

Lemoncurd · 10/01/2019 22:24

Babies vary so much!
We did have some clothing in 0-3m size but all three of mine basically went into 3-6m clothing from birth as the 0-3m stuff was too short. No chance of getting them into newborn sizes.
