to think that baby clothes sizes are huge!

Out of curiosity... when did your baby/babies grow in to their ‘newborn’ clothes?

My DS is 11 weeks old and still fits in to a handful of ‘tiny baby’ clothes. Newborn stuff is still a little baggy (and looks very cute!). ‘Up to one month’ is huge.

He was 5lbs when he was born, so quite tiny. He’s my only baby however so didn’t feel small as it’s all I knew. Now however he's still small but much bigger than a newborn!

The first thing anyone says STILL when they meet him is ‘oh my god he’s tiny!!’ which is true (but I secretly get bored of hearing it...).

What’s your experience? Anyone else find that baby clothes are massive? I guess it's so they get longer use out of them :)

My ds was 8lb 5oz at birth and went straight into new born clothes. He's almost 1 now and in 12-18 months clothes, has been since about 10 months. He's 97th percentile for weight and 99th for height though, so we knew he'd need bigger sizes.

Sirzy · 10/01/2019 18:31

Ds was (and still is) always two Ages behind in clothes. But he was on the 9th centile when he was born and now at 9 he is 25th for height and 2nd for weight so makes sense I guess!

SoyDora · 10/01/2019 18:32

Mine were all between 7.5 and 8.5lbs. All fit the relevant sizes at roughly the right times! DC3 is 2 days old and newborn fits perfectly (7lbs 13oz)

BeanTownNancy · 10/01/2019 18:37

Depends on the shop as well. Some shops cater for longer, slimmer children (like Sainsbury's IME) and some kids clothes are basically square (I'm looking at you, Tesco). FWIW, my son is 28ish months and has only just moved into 18-24m clothes. His cousin who is a few months younger has been in 18-24m for a while now. Mine was under 5lb at birth and has always been skinny - no fat on that kid at all; sleepsuits would look massive on him, but he would grow out of the length so he couldn't straighten his legs so we always had to size up and have them silly baggy again. Can still only buy trousers with drawstring waists or they fall straight off. 🤣

My nearly 10lb baby looked huge next to the premies I’m scubu. He was too big for newborn stuff from day one. He always grew out of clothes as soon as he hit the bottom age range. Ie at 3 months he was too big for 3-6. At 6 months outgrew 6-9 months. He’s now 6 and in age 8-9 tops and 7 trousers.

My niece was 5 lbs she looked so tiny to me (and several years later still does, her clothes are a good 1year to 6 months less than her age. Clothes are based on an average. Your baby is small mine was big so stands to reason why they don’t fit the right age clothes.

birdiewoof · 10/01/2019 18:39

Not for my babies, but then they were all over 10lbs Grin

BackBoiler · 10/01/2019 18:40

My DS2 didnt fit into all of my DS1 clothes! I bought clothes 'up to 10lb' which is larger than newborn but more snug than 0-3

emzw12 · 10/01/2019 18:41

I had a 9lb baby we never used newborn clothes. 0-3months didn't last much longer!

Bobfossil2 · 10/01/2019 18:42

No, mine was 11lbs so went straight into 0-3!

PorpentinaScamander · 10/01/2019 18:42

I had a 8lb 2oz baby. He wore new born for about 3 months.
Mind you he was still wearing age 3-4 pants at 10 Grin

adviceonthepox · 10/01/2019 18:42

I ve had a small baby and 3 big babies I found baby clothes to be really small! My heaviest baby wore newborn for a week then was in 0-3months for 5 weeks and then in 3-6 months. She is 4 now and wears age 6-7/7-8 clothes. She is on the 99.6th centile for height and 50th centile for her weight. My 3 year old was the same and is in 5-6 clothes 99.6 centile for height and 75th for weight. Girls clothes especially are really short in the leg and body which is a nightmare when you have a tall girl!
I have friends who moan that boys clothes are very long and not very wide.

MamaHechtick · 10/01/2019 18:44

Yabu, for my youngest I've thought baby clothes are ridiculously small. He was born a few weeks early at just under 7lb but went to over 10lb by the time he was 6 weeks. At 3-4 months he was in 6-9mth clothing for most shops but Primark he was wearing 9-12 month clothing. Now he's just 5 and wearing 7-8 years. Granted he's on the 99th centiles but I've been thinking that clothes are small for the past 5 years.

I think they just make them at a rough average although most sizes do vary by where you shop.

Nothisispatrick · 10/01/2019 18:45

DD was 7lbs when born and her newborn clothes fit her she was about 10 weeks, however her 0-3 month clothes that we moved her into have only last a month, so I wish I’d used them earlier! She’s now 3 and a half months and I’ve just washed and put her 3-6 month stuff in her drawers. I think she’s quite long rather than tubby.

DonnaDarko · 10/01/2019 18:46

DS was 8lb 110z, went straight into 0-3. Outgrew those within a couple of months as he is 91st percentile.

To me, all baby clothes are tiny lol

Theunreasonableone · 10/01/2019 18:49

I went to a baby weaning class once where all of the mothers were competitively telling each other how tiny their children were (they weren’t, they were just normal babies) it was weird. Your post strikes me a bit like that.

pinkhorse · 10/01/2019 18:54

Mine was 8lb 8 and went straight into 0-3. Never got to use the newborn stuff.

GraysonCartier · 10/01/2019 18:54

Eh @Theunreasonableone really? I can't see any reason why one would competitively brag about how small their baby is. When he was first born I actually wished he was bigger as he dropped a lot of weight and was 4lbs9. He was so fragile. But if that's how you interpret my post then okay! It's not how it's intended.

Though I'm definitely BU re sizes! Just found it amazing that one 12lb baby can be in tiny baby still and another in 0-3.

PhilomenaButterfly · 10/01/2019 18:58

DS2 never fitted into newborn clothes.

TinyElm · 10/01/2019 18:58

No, you just have a smallish baby. Baby clothes sizes are based on an average (presumably). I.e. 50 on the centiles.

Some people have bigger than average babies instead. Our baby is a big baby and growing at a wild rate, so is always in clothes sizes for a baby 4-5 months older.

So at 11 weeks old (just under 3mo) he was well into 3-6 months. At four months he was in 6-9 months.

Louiselouie0890 · 10/01/2019 18:59

My kids 3 and is just about catching up to the right age size. The worst age was 12-18m, 9_12 too small 12-18m was huge

Bear2014 · 10/01/2019 18:59

My DS was 11lb1 at birth and went straight into 0-3. He's still tall and at 17months is wearing some 2-3 year stuff.

Theunreasonableone · 10/01/2019 19:01

Grayson honest to God that is how they went on and on it was very strange. I apologise for interpreting your post as the same kind of stealth boast.

ballroompink · 10/01/2019 19:02

DS1 was 7lb 8oz and newborn stuff was very roomy on him for the first month! DS2 was 6lb 9oz and wore tiny baby size until he was six weeks old and newborn size until he was two months old Grin He's now 15mo and on the 50th centile but 12-18 month trousers are still too big for him! I always find trouser sizes to be all over the place. Tops are more predictable.

Nothisispatrick · 10/01/2019 19:05

Why on earth would someone boast that their baby is small?! What a weird comment.
