Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

Serendipity, low carb does not mean low fibre. There are plenty low carb foods rich in fibre and nutrients, such as nuts or broccoli. Low carb has scientifically proven benefits for people like me with insulin resistance issue or those diabetic. Obese people will almost certainly have some insulin resistance due to the amount of fat in their bodies, so low carb (and better still fasting) is an excellent way for them to regain their health.

20 years ago, when I was 15, I was 7 stone and a size 8 (which was loose on me but my only other option at the time would have been age 13 in Tammy Girl)
Now I'm 35, 9 stone and 'still' a size 8

Yes, if I was that same 15 year old in today's money, I'd be a size 4-6

My theory on the 'invention' of sizes 4 and 6 was more to do with the fact that girls aged 13+ have more money to spend and interest in clothes than they did 20 years ago, and want to shop in Topshop, Miss Selfridge etc. Retailers took note and expanded the size range accordingly...hence the death of Tammy Girl.
Could be wrong but just my 2 penneth worth.

Here is my 10:5 stone, 5ft2 body.

OK I'm going to bite too. As I said many posts earlier I'm 56 years old, 5'5 and size 6. And I can't now find the post that said that any size 6 women over 40 must be scrawny, constantly starving, have a sunken face and be self obsessed - I don't think I'm any of those things. Well, I think everyone's a bit self-obsessed, but I probably am not any more so than most. Oh, or the other post that said we're all fantasists...

I'll post photos of clothes labels too if you like Grin

You look great thecatneuterer, bodies are different, according to BMI i am overweight and need to loose a stone, but I control what I eat as it is, yet I have heard some people who are size 6/8 on here, who eat more than me.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/01/2019 14:07

Sorry for the underwear shot, came back from bootcamp and was feeling happy.

thecatneuterer · 11/01/2019 14:15

Thanks Aeroflot girl. You look very toned and not at all what I would expect with those stats. I'm 3 inches taller and 2 and a half stone lighter and yet I think we look almost the same. Interesting isn't it?

Yes thecatneutere, that is it isen't it, bodies are different different types, metabolisms, genetics. I am bottom heavy and always have been due to my Medetarranian mother, so I have to take a size 14 bottom. I work out and already control my portions, I used to be 12 stone and size 16 which I was so unhappy about, being short which I am, I did not carry well at all. I am glad that I opened some people's eyes that my stats don'e mean you are fat, they sound large, and with the BMI i am overweight, but my photo is how I am with no airbrush.

Timmytoo · 11/01/2019 14:34

I've just checked checked UK size measurements- see pic.

I've just out of interest, took my body measurements. As per the pic I posted, I said I was a size 6-8. Looking now at the reference sizes used, it seems that my hips and bust is under a size 4. So what size am I? I have to wear a belt for most of my trousers and jeans as they fall down otherwise. My other clothes had to be taken in to fit. So now I have no idea what size category I fit into.

My Current Measurements

Waist - 66cm = 25.9 inches
Bust - 81cm = 31.9 inches
Hips - 82cm = 32.28 inches
Thighs - 43cm = 16.9 inches
Length of thigh - 30cm = 11.8 inches
Length of leg - 67 = 26.37 inches
Calf - 32cm = 12.60 inches
Ankles - 19cm = 7.4 inches

@Timmytoo

Isn't it fascinating that the margins between dress sizes go up by 1 inch from sizes 4-10 and then start to go up by 2 inches each time thereafter! Shows how arbitrary it is.

TheTroutofNoCraic · 11/01/2019 14:51

It sort of ties in with what I was saying earlier about the invention of sizes 4-6 (which I don't recall seeing in shops before about the mid 2000s) An 8 when I was about 20yo was (if I recall correctly from working in a jeans shop) 26" and sizes 4 and 6 simply weren't available.

Timmytoo · 11/01/2019 14:54

Good spot @TheTroutofNoCraic can't say I notice that. You must have an excellent eye for detail---- Smile

TheTroutofNoCraic · 11/01/2019 14:55

I've often thought I'd make a good detective Wink

SerenDippitty · 11/01/2019 14:58

No they weren't you had to wear children's clothes if you needed smaller than that!

Aeroflotgirl · 11/01/2019 14:58

I think sizes vary so much, I will on the top 10 one shop, and 16 in another, in Primark I had to try s size 20 trousers as 18 were too small.

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 15:01

You are teeny Timmytoo. All my measurements are bigger than your's, apart from my waist. I have problems finding clothes that fit, I often can't get sleeves to go over my arms, or jeans over my legs.

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 15:04

I now bizarrely know my calf measures 14.5 inches. Grin

Timmytoo · 11/01/2019 15:05

It's strange as I don't feel teeny at all, sometimes I feel like a barbarian compared to other people. Maybe it's just in my mind 🤷‍♀️

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 15:08

Not compared with me ha

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 15:13

Full sized pic of me, including my "gargoyle face".

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 15:15

I have strangely long limbs for my height, so always look thinner than I am.

Timmytoo · 11/01/2019 15:16

Wow @sizzledrizz ! I wasn't expecting that. You're so majestic. Almost like an Angelica Houston or Cher type poise. You must get plenty of double takes Shock

TheTroutofNoCraic · 11/01/2019 15:31

@SerenDippitty Precisely this. I mentioned that a bit further upthread, my options at age 15 were a slightly baggy size 8 or age 13 from Tammy Girl.

Chesneyhawkes1 · 11/01/2019 16:04

I sometimes get kids school trousers for my work uniform. Work are meant to supply them but they are huge. Non iron scuff resistant knees, lovely 😂 plus kids trainers are so much cheaper too.
