Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

Sounds like your friend would benefit from following your example of eating well in moderation and not getting weird and obsessive about size.

Praguemum · 11/01/2019 06:01

Myum always said that after 40 it's your figure or your face, meaning that if you lose too much weight your face looks older. I'd definitely agree with her these days. I'm 45, 5ft 10 and a size 14. Would like to be a 12 again as I've gained 5kgs since we moved to the country (no bloody pavements!), which I think is a healthy goal. Size 6. Mmm bet she looks like a gargoyle. 🤣

user1457017537 · 11/01/2019 06:59

Praguemum I agree with your mum! Unfortunately the size 6’s then go and have a face full of fillers and Botox nowadays!

MrsJamin · 11/01/2019 07:06

The metrics of dress size or weight aren't very useful, including BMI. I have been strength training for 18 months and my weight hasn't changed at all but my body has changed shape for the better and I am stronger and fitter. Those are better indicators of health for me. Women lose muscle every year beyond 35 and it gets harder to keep it as you get older, especially after the menopause. This is more important to keep in mind than weight or dress size. Most women would never be able to be a size 6 according to their body shape, me included. I am a 10 on top but will always be 12 on my behind, especially now because of all the squats and lifts I do!

MrsJamin · 11/01/2019 07:07

I should add I'm 40

sizzledrizz · 11/01/2019 07:51

Really there's no need to insult slimmer women. Patriarchy at its finest.

Turquoise123 · 11/01/2019 07:52

Strange question- average dress size in UK is 16. Google it...

bengalcat · 11/01/2019 07:56

On a metabolic level for each increase in decade you need to eat a little bit less and do a little more to maintain the same body weight .

Karigan195 · 11/01/2019 07:57

Friend of mine is 6 years younger than me (I’m 41) but is so thin it’s ridiculous. She looks wayyyy older than me!

At 41 im a size 12 having put on a bit being immobile due to broken knee. But I’ve never been a size 8. Usually a size ten which id like to go back to but since I’m pregnant that will have to wait.

I think it depends on your individual metabolism but what the pp said about your face or your figure is very true.

whassupmissus · 11/01/2019 07:59

Plenty of thin women in their 40s look amazing and don't look like gargoyles or have a face of fillers. It's hard to maintain a good body after kids and over 40 but you can and when you do you usually look bloody good.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/01/2019 08:01

This thread is just so sad, women comparing how small they are, how much they eat, weigh, an miniscule differences, even going so far as to say, a size 10 is large. We women are very critical of ourselves and each other, you don't find that with the men, I find, well I have seen, they take a just don't care attitude. Dh is 6ft, he is 17 stone, so obese, but he thinks he looks good and does not need to loose weight at all. I think that is the feeling amongst his friends.

Aeroflotgirl · 11/01/2019 08:04

MrsJamin, I am finding that, been doing fitness for 4 years, and reducing my diet, at my heaviest I was 12 stone and 5ft 2, now I am 10;5 stone but quite toned and more muscular, with emerging abs. I feel better, this is me, this is my natural shape so be it. If I wanted to be a stone or two lighter, it would mean, I would hardly eat for me, and that would not be good.

Gargoyles. Ffs. I haven't had fillers and still look ok thanks. Don't look my age at all.

Not all slim people are gaunt 🙄 This whole must look awful/have the body of a teenager thing etc is ridiculous. Some people look better slimmer. Some don't 🤷🏽‍♀️

Teateaandmoretea · 11/01/2019 08:16

I thought this thread was about how to stay healthy into middle age, not about what might be attractive to a man.

No it definitely isn't anything what so ever to do with health.

Plenty of thin women in their 40s look amazing and don't look like gargoyles or have a face of fillers. It's hard to maintain a good body after kids and over 40 but you can and when you do you usually look bloody good.

Plenty of slim/ normal women in their 40s look amazing and have fabulous bodies too. Why would you want to be 'thin'? Just utterly bizarre.

whassupmissus · 11/01/2019 08:22

Slim is the same as thin (as opposed to fat) and what is normal exactly?

Aeroflotgirl · 11/01/2019 08:23

Yes Marylin I have told him countless of timea, he can see me get into shape. He went for his 40 year old check at the Nurse, they did the tests, and apparently he is heathy
So that is confirmation to him, that he is fine. He does carry it well, it is mostly round the middle and face, his legs are slim. I am trying, I have told him those things.

HumptyNumptyNooNoo · 11/01/2019 08:33

Has anyone ascertained wether the original question refers to UK size 10 or USA size 10 ( which is quite a bit bigger ! )

Teateaandmoretea · 11/01/2019 08:33

No slim isn't the same as thin. I am slim but definitely not thin.

gamerwidow · 11/01/2019 08:38

Even if you are slim and look like a gargoyle so what. As long as you are healthy really why should you care.
The best thing about getting older is realising other people’s opinions have nothing to do with you.

Teateaandmoretea · 11/01/2019 08:48

Exactly it shouldn't be about analysing what people look like. It should be about health, strength and fitness but sadly these threads are never about that.

geekone · 11/01/2019 08:58

Exercise is important as you get older to keep your bones strong. Getting into fitness, finding something you like to do, is really worthwhile. It can help maintain your body shape if that’s what you want but it will help your overall health as you age. Be happy and be healthy that’s what 2019 is for me.

Hannahmates · 11/01/2019 09:06

My cousin is 41 and had two kids. She is still a size two. It doesn't matter what is the norm though. Your friend should have never commented on your size. Size ten sounds perfectly healthy. Your new year resolution should be to drop this friend like hot coal.

Amazonfromkent · 11/01/2019 09:12

I feel, reading this thread, like I've gone mad?? Where are all these size 2 ot 4 women??? I can't see any!!! Are they all 4 foot tall??? There's nothing more tragic than a chronically hungry, self obsessed stringy middle aged woman with a hollow face. Sorry.

Juells · 11/01/2019 09:18

The sizes are imaginary. Manufacturers must dick around with them all the time, so that customers can boast of being a size 6. And what's to boast about, anyway? When I was a teenager I used to envy girls with curves so much. :(
