Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

@JacintaJones

I agree with the supposition of there being lots of deluded/fanciful posts on the vast majority of threads discussing size in relation to age/weight/parity.

It's just so sad that even on anonymous forums women are so conditioned to compete over physical attributes.

Dress it up any way you choose to but the subtext is "I'm more valuable as a female because I am slimmer/appear younger/appear wealthier"

The worst things you can be here are fat, old, poor, and common. Cue women falling all over themselves to prove to each other that they are none of those things. This is where women are deriving their self esteem from.

Viva la patriarchy!

Good post. It's utterly pathetic that (some) posters on here, seem to think they are a cut above, because they (claim) they are 7 stone, and a size 6 (which is actually a size 10 - but retailers call it a 6 to feed the fantasies of the deluded...)

In addition, they claim to be a higher social class, and obviously in a better career 'because I am 7 stone, and a size 4, and I go to the gym for 33 hours a week.'

As I said, (and this is a point you also touched on,) these are the same type who claim people think they look 20 years younger, they claim they are on six figures a year, and they ALWAYS have a cleaner, and a nanny. Oh, and they ALWAYS live somewhere 'posh.' Wink

@birdiewoof

Geez I feel like a whale reading this!

Please don't. VERY few people are what they say they are on the internet

No real adult woman should be a size 6. Only 16 year olds should be that thin. Sounds very unhealthy to me.

You are hilarious.

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2019 17:15

I agree Pickled, a size 6, would be around 6 stone, and an average 10 year old girl would weight that, it seems very tiny.

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2019 17:16

When dd was 10, she was 6 stone and fitting into ladies size 6. She was weighed by her paeditrician then, and she was a healthy weight for her height of 4ft 8. I guess if your a very short woman, that would be a healthy weight.

Lots of adult women are a size 6!

I vary between a 6 and an 8 depending on what I've been doing food and exercise wise.

I'm 5ft 3" and to fit into a River Island size I weigh 7.5 stone.

I don't look skinny or gaunt. I look healthy. Far healthier than when I weighed more and was a size 12. The weight just doesn't sit well on me as I've got a small frame.

Linlou82 · 10/01/2019 17:24

I was a size 6-8 until I was 30 now 36 and a 10-12 and actually looking at past photos i am a lot happier, look better and healthier than I was.

sizzledrizz · 10/01/2019 17:25

51, and size 6 -8 at 5ft 5. I tend to eat a high protein/high fat/ lowish carb diet with some wine. I weight train and run hard. I don't do marathons though, I concentrate on weight training since it offer the most benefits. I've notice that weight training is now being referred to body sculpting etc., but essentially isn't it just weight training?

EmeraldShamrock · 10/01/2019 17:28

I am a 6 to 8 I can fit six in most shops but prefer the 8.
I am 5.3 petite width shoulders and hips, I weight 7.9lb.
I genuinely do not look too thin or skinny or skeleton or like a teen.
I would put up a pic only I'm used to my new username and will have to name change again.

halfwitpicker · 10/01/2019 17:28

If I'm a size 6 in Canada, does that count?

sizzledrizz · 10/01/2019 17:28

Plus some women have a smaller bone structure, and some are naturally broader. You can't really change it. Some workout hard and are bigger some, are always going to be slight, no matter how heavy they (I) lift.

Taking up weight training is a good idea, and just walking and moving more.
You don't need to aim to be a certain size

Leapfrog44 · 10/01/2019 17:29

I'm size 8-10 and 40 years old. I do no exercise and eat what I want so far but I guess your hormonal changes can make it harder to stay slim as you age. That and becoming unfit and losing muscle.

I think that people are mostly overweight because they eat shit food though, not because of exercise. Processed crap, Chinese and sweets etc instead of real food.

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:30

I’m 6ft and size 2. Nearly 45.

kimmsutt · 10/01/2019 17:31

I’m 45, 5 ft 4 and size 16-18. I feel large and know all of the factors... eating too much, sedentary job, 2 young kids, partner working away from home mom-fri, tired, frazzled, no time for myself/exercise... but if a friend ever commented I would not be impressed (unless it was a sudden change in weight and they were concerned). You’re old enough to know what feels good, what to do to make any changes and if you want to do it now. Maybe offer to do something you are interested in, or suggest learning something new together (I took up roller derby at 43!).

Geekster1963 · 10/01/2019 17:32

I'm 46 and a size 8-10, due to a midlife crisis five years ago! I was a size 14 then, and my BMI was 28. I took up running, lost three stones and my BMI is now 20.6.

MrsR2be · 10/01/2019 17:32

I'm 40 and a size 8 I'm 5'2" so quite short

TheFairyQueen · 10/01/2019 17:35

You need a new friend 😂😂

I'm 39, got 2 children under 4. Am a size 10-12. Was previously an 8-10 pre children. Personally I find people who are very thin tend to look older..

Casey Batchelor ( minor celeb) gas recently lost 4 stone and yes her body is amazing but she's aged 10 years!!

I'd rather look younger even if that means being abit chubbier 😂

MrsDrudge · 10/01/2019 17:36

Don’t worry about it - by the time you get to 40 you will be more concerned about the wrinkles and grey hair.

Bozlem80 · 10/01/2019 17:36

Well I feel thoroughly ashamed because I’m 38 & a size 22 I’m just a fat bastard, my sisters who are younger than me are a size 8-10 & eat whatever they like, never go the gym, drive everywhere yet I walk everywhere, try watch what I eat & I’m just fat & have been all my adult life, took me over 6 months to lose just 2 stone & I didn’t drop 1 dress size so gave up!

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2019 17:37

A size 6 just seems so small, unless you are petite in height. I eat 3 small meals a day (2 mini size toasts, main meal, and a small roll, salad and crisps for dinner) 1 snack size chocolate bar, 1 small piece of cake, and work out for 1 hour most days and still I am a size 12-14, I am resigned to being that size. I am trying to loose a stone, but if I don't I want to maintain the size I am. I come from a Mediterranean culture whereby the ladies tend to have big hips, bums and thighs, which I have, and need a bigger bottoms to accommodate that. It is not because I am overweight.

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:38

..... hello.... I’m not really 6ft and size two- although I am nearly 45. Bit scary no one questioned that. Think I’d be half dead. I’m 5ft 4 and 12-14. Not sure why it matters. Being healthy is more important. Being too thin isn’t very healthy either.

ManOfKent · 10/01/2019 17:39

From a man's perspective I'd say....

Size 6 is ridiculous.
Size 8 to 10 is OK if it's your natural size without working at it or eating just lettuce.
Size 10 too skinny.
Size 12 better.
Size 14 very acceptable.

...but if you're a difficult woman with a fearsome temper and few additional charms then anything size 0 to size 40 is unacceptable no matter what.

Just saying...
