AIBU to think that most women over 35..

Are a size 10 or above?

My friend has suggested that my new year resolution should be to slim down and tone my body - st first I was offended, but I actually think she was genuinely trying to be helpful or perhaps, motivational? Grin

She’s a size 6 having focused on exercise/diet last year and lost 2 stone! I’m a size 10 and eat whatever I like Grin she thinks that once I’m 40 it’ll be hard to maintain my weight unless I join her as a fitness fanatic Hmm

AIBU to think that most of us over-35s are a size 10 or above though. She’s the exception not the norm - her lifestyle seems tedious as she lives at the gym.

My sister is 45 and a size 8

Timmytoo · 10/01/2019 17:41

Why is 8-10 ok but a size 10 too skinny? Confused

romany4 · 10/01/2019 17:42

I'm 47 and a size 8.
Size and weight hasn't changed apart from being pregnant since I was 17

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:43

My next door neighbour’s, milkman’s wife’s, aunty’s friend’s sister is a size 8 at 50. 🤣

EmeraldShamrock · 10/01/2019 17:43

The worst things you can be here are fat, old, poor, and common. Cue women falling all over themselves to prove to each other that they are none of those things. This is where women are deriving their self esteem from.

Viva la patriarchy!
I am not fat, but I am poor, I am common, I am working class, I've got shit teeth, a low skilled job.
You're right I do not know why fall over each other to compare. Everyone is loved by someone.
Life is hard enough.

themailfail · 10/01/2019 17:45

I'm 5.5" and from 19-37 I wore between size 4-6. At 38, I increased to an 8 and at 39 to a size 10. My metabolism is certainly slowing down. I'm a very petite frame so a size 6 looked perfectly healthy (4, not so much). My ideal for my frame is 6-8. I don't think I'll see that again without a huge amount of work.

leonasa · 10/01/2019 17:46

This has to be the worst thread I’ve ever read on Mumsnet. What started out as OP asking for advice seems to have degenerated into some bizarre competition of who fits into the smallest dress size. Size 2? Really? That doesn’t even exist in the UK, so posters saying that are either American or trolling.

And before anyone accuses me of hating on skinny women, i’m not, I’m slim myself and always have been, but this is just seriously unhealthy behaviour the like of which I haven’t experienced since I was a borderline anorexic teen (and still never smaller than a size 8 then, btw). Everyone has different frames, bone density, muscle mass etc that make a huge difference to what people weigh and what size they wear. One of the best things about being post 35 is having learned that what’s important is being healthy and happy with yourself, surely, and not fuelling some masochistic competition.

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:48

Mnetters love one upmanship, comparisons, feeling superior etc etc. They love a good, how much do you earn thread or how big is your house, how thin are you? all under the guise of an “innocent” Aibu question. It’s quite entertaining to see how far some will go.

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:49

Size 2 was a joke!!’ I was taking the piss as I agree it’s ridiculous!!

Aeroflotgirl · 10/01/2019 17:51

I get the impression that unless you are between a size 6-10, and 10 is looking fat on here, that you are an obese bloater who should be eating less and doing more exercise. That 40 years ago, anyone over a size 8 would be considered fat.

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:53

I don’t think this thread, if at all true, is representative of the population at all. Think mnet must attract a certain kind!!!

mizu · 10/01/2019 17:54

I am 45 and a size 10-12 but that all depends on the shop I buy from.

Don't know what I weigh but I'm 5ft 7". If I lose a bit of weight (usually from Sept-Dec as its a stressful term), I don't look or feel good.

Size 6 sounds very small.

stevie69 · 10/01/2019 17:55

It's such a boring topic. Yawwwwn. Be what you are.

Bit lacking in ambition for me. Be what you want to be!

Sb74 · 10/01/2019 17:57

I was a size 6-8 when I went through a difficult divorce if that counts? Still have the evidence in my wardrobe to remind me. Not of the divorce of course. I can fit things over one leg still!!

EmeraldShamrock · 10/01/2019 17:59

5.7 size 10 to 12 is just as slim as 5.3 size 6-8.
With a 4inch height difference, my friend is 5.8 a size 12 and is super slim and toned.

MummyMayo1988 · 10/01/2019 18:04

Sounds patronising to me.

I'm 30, a mother of 2 (expecting number 3 any day now) and am usually a size 16. I eat healthily and don't overindulge.

My best friend is also 30, no children and about a size 4. She also eats healthily.

I don't think it's good or healthy to compare yourself to your friend. Your obviously healthy and eat well - if your ultimately happy with yourself; politely ignor your friend!

LisaD76 · 10/01/2019 18:07

42 a short arse and am 10-12, used to be an 8 looked awful and completely flat cheste, have been this size for about 11 years so nothing to do with age am happier in myself although I wish I could flatten tummy area a bit

Rachand23 · 10/01/2019 18:17

Being thin, I.e. a size 6 does not equate to being healthy. If your that size as you get older you are leaving yourself open to many conditions- no padding to protect your bones if you fall.

There’s nothing wrong in being a 10 or a 12 in fact they sound much more healthy sizes. Yes, it’s true it is harder to loose weight as you age, but by age I am talking past your 50s, so you have awhile yet to go.

Don’t fret about it, eat well, no rubbish foods and take some exercise and above all be happy about yourself, then it’s healthy mind and body, you’ve done your best.

EggOfScotland · 10/01/2019 18:21

I've always said that women are the ones who drive our obsession with 'conventional beauty standards'.

minipie · 10/01/2019 18:25

The OP said AIBU to think most women 35+ are size 10+

On AIBU that is bound to bring out lots of women saying they are 43 and size 6

It’s not a need to compete or boast

It’s a need to argue with the OP That is the nature of AIBU

leonasa · 10/01/2019 18:28

Size 2 was a joke!!’ I was taking the piss as I agree it’s ridiculous!!

Sorry Sb74, that did occur to me after I posted SmileSmile

I hardly know anyone in real life of the sizes people are disproportionately claiming to be here, even teenagers!

I thought we'd entered a more body positive age so this thread seems pretty regressive - let's remember that women can be gorgeous at lots of different sizes eh everyone?!

Sparklyhousedust · 10/01/2019 18:29

I am 44 and a 14. Once I was a 10, but once I was young and probably more bothered.

Plenty of AIBUs are met with a resounding YANBU, so not sure about that...

Exmouthlady · 10/01/2019 18:32

I was always a size 8. Struggled to gain weight.

Wait til you have kids they said, 3 days after giving birth, back in my jeans.

Wait til you hit 30 they said, nope, I even gave birth again, 3 days, back in my jeans.

Wait til you hit 40 they said, nope. I had a total hysterectomy at 44, that'll do it they said, nope.

Wait til you hit 50 they said, nope, 53 now and still wearing size 8 jeans.

Just for the record, I eat what I want and lots of it, I also have a sweet tooth. But nothing makes one iota of difference.

Apparently women of my age and size make up just 4% of the female UK population.
