To ask about sweet tables at weddings

I love how the sweet section of buffets look at weddings . For anyone that hasn’t seen them it’s a load of jars filled with sweets with tongs and little bags to put them in. I really want one but I’m on a budget and also not wanting waste.

Do you or would you eat them at a wedding party?
If you had one at your own wedding was it eaten ?
Thanks

Adults loved it at the wedding I went to

Twodogsandahooch · 09/01/2019 19:43

How many people are coming in the evening? You say that I family member is doing the buffet as a favour, I would seriously consider giving them an extra £100 towards the spread , instead of doing the sweet cart.

livelyredjellybean · 09/01/2019 19:43

I had fishbowl table centres filled with sweets (and some balloons rising from them) with little bags on the tables so people could help themselves. Quite a bit went but we did take a lot home. They didn’t go to waste 😁

Ohheyyy · 09/01/2019 19:44

I've been to 3 or 4 weddings with them and the only time they've been touched is when there are a few kids invited.

IggyAce · 09/01/2019 19:44

Dh is a wedding photographer and they are usually pretty popular. Quite a few couples do there own you Dan get the jars and bowls cheaply from home bargains and you can order massive bags of Haribo sweets from makro.

Dieu · 09/01/2019 19:45

Depends on the sweets! If it's a load of hard-boiled and gummy sweets, then I wouldn't bother.
If there is stuff like chocolate, fudge, caramels etc, then that's different!

bollockswhogivesashitreally · 09/01/2019 19:47

My niece had one at her wedding last year. It was empty by the time we left! Did have lots of kids at the wedding but it was actually the first wedding I had been that had one and a photo booth. But the venue was gorgeous and it was really tastefully done... had a great laugh

Eliza9917 Fair do's. I can see how being spammed by wedding fluff stuff could be annoying.

Enjoy your day.

Haven't read the thread but just to say we had one at our wedding and it was cleared! Everyone loved it and took pick and mix home with them for the drunken cab ride home!

Every wedding I've been to in recent years has had a sweet table that has been well used but I also wouldn't think anything is there wasn't one.

We did our own- jars from IKEA, tongs from eBay, sweets on special from Asda or Costco.

PlumpSyrianHamster · 09/01/2019 19:50

Oh, god, we went to one evening do and the only food on offer was bloody sweets! Bowls of jelly sweets and lollies on the tables, sweet cart and then cake. It was dire! Sweets aren't good for soaking up alcohol.

It's fun as long as it's not a substitute for food.

percypeppers · 09/01/2019 19:50

I'm not really into weddings with lots of 'props' and signs. Just seems a lot of unnecessary expense. Each to their own.

Normandy144 · 09/01/2019 19:50

I don't see the point. If you have the budget then it's a nice extra. For me though, it falls way down the pecking order, and we prioritised our budget for a live band, signature cocktails and a free bar. That meant we skipped on favours and any other extras like photo booths etc. It was the right decision for us and our guests.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 19:52

If I got married all over again I would have all the props. Grin Plus an ice cream van to the church as it was a boiling hot day.

cheercaptain · 09/01/2019 19:53

It is a nice to have and can be a big hit with kids and big kids (adults). If you want one and are on a budget, then do it yourself.

NoLeslie · 09/01/2019 19:54

I went to one which was beautiful but there were a lot of normally lovely teenagers there who had far too many sweets. It was a shame to see this tribe of Kevins kind of ransacking what was a lovely quaint thing tbh.

BrokenWing · 09/01/2019 19:56

Dniece had this for her wedding last year, first time I'd seen it.

Made up bags with stickers as favours werd mostly left behind on table even by kids, sweet table at reception was mostly untouched in favour of savory buffet.

Bibijayne · 09/01/2019 19:58

Friends of ours had one last spring. Amazing - everything vanished. They did it themselves. Killer jars, paper bags and a selection of penny sweets from Costco.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/01/2019 19:59

Wtf is a "signature cocktail" ?

Imalittleelf · 09/01/2019 20:04

I did one. Had loads of sweets, some pre made up bags and the rest in jars. The whole lot was eaten although one small child was sick (oops)

I got jars and bowls from second hand shops. Sweets I was fortunate to find someone on Facebook who did sweet bags selling off a bunch of stock and extras for £50 I topped this up with sweets from wholesale and Lidl.

Cost about£80- £100 in total

ScurfnNerf · 09/01/2019 20:04

We did one - it was a huge hit! Jars of sweets, willy wonka/oversized lolly style table centrepieces, personalised love hearts.
The kids fell on the sweets almost immediately (massive sorry to their parents!), but we put out paper bags and most people took a bag of sweets home at the end of the night. They were our wedding favours essentially.
We only really had sweets from our sweet trees left - people said afterwards they didn’t want to destroy them!
We made most of the jars/decorations ourselves.
Lots of people raved about it afterwards (that and the fish and chips and ice cream vans!) and a few people asked us to help them do something similar for their weddings/birthday bashes.
One of the most successful parts of our wedding.

bibbitybobbityyhat · 09/01/2019 20:04

Surely only children are interested in sweets?

menztoray · 09/01/2019 20:10

Wow! You seriously think only children like sweets??

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 20:12

I quite like a Love Heart or a foamy banana.

LagunaBubbles · 09/01/2019 20:12

Surely only children are interested in sweets?

Seriously? Hmm

TootTootPeanutbutter · 09/01/2019 20:14

I must have imagined the hundreds of adults I've witnessed buying and eating sweets.
