To ask about sweet tables at weddings

I love how the sweet section of buffets look at weddings . For anyone that hasn’t seen them it’s a load of jars filled with sweets with tongs and little bags to put them in. I really want one but I’m on a budget and also not wanting waste.

Do you or would you eat them at a wedding party?
If you had one at your own wedding was it eaten ?
Thanks

I've never seen this, but even though I am middle class I think it could work. Personally I don't like sweets, but I would happily eat too many little chocolates or bits of fudge. DH and DS would clean up the sweets for you.

I would much prefer alcohol at a wedding rather than sweets.

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 09/01/2019 14:05

DSS had one and it was very popular. However he vastly overrated how many sweets he would need and so he came round to our house with a huge box of various sweets after the wedding.

I'd prefer sweets.

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 14:07

The wedding I went to had sweets, a photo booth and a free bar. Grin

Just to add we only had 4 very well behaved children at ours, and most of us were in our mid-20s and immature when it comes to things such as sweets! So that may have been why it worked well! Grin

We had one and it went down so well my mum brought it and it's been used by loads of the family for weddings and christening and birthday party's x well worth it x

MyFamilyAndOtherAnimals1 · 09/01/2019 14:11

We had a sweet table. We have been married almost five years (for context of budget)

We went to a cheap shop, B&M or Savers type of shop, bought plastic jars with lids that looked like glass and £80 worth of sweets. I got paper sweet bags from eBay in the perfect colours for our theme at just pennies (like £1.50 or so)It looked great.

In hindsight we both agreed we could have spent double that amount as it proved very popular.

Some of the sweets came in already nice containers, some we (well, the hotel staff) decanted from nasty plastic tubs, into nice jars.

I highly recommend a sweetie table. You can easily do it for well under £100

I’m with @Eliza9917

Also, I'd take pick&mix over alcohol any time...

Have what you like - it’s your wedding! And if you can do it as economically as possible, it’s a win-win!
My niece did similar at her wedding but instead of sweets she asked people who liked baking to contribute biscuits/cookies. They looked lovely, were all eaten and people enjoyed making a contribution (your home made fudge sounds a good idea!)

dancinginthehall · 09/01/2019 14:14

I agree with you Eliza

My mum did one for us at our wedding. She also liaised with MIL and FIL and they all found pictures of me and my husband as kids and put them side-by-side at similar ages and they formed the backdrop of the table. It was really sweet and gave people another reason to go over to the table to look at the pictures, which I think then tempted more people to eat the sweets. Most of the sweets were eaten by the end of the evening reception. There was a savoury finger buffet, the wedding cake and the sweets table for the evening guests.

We had one at our wedding and most of it was gone by the time DH and I got around to it! It was very popular and seems to be at most weddings we’ve attended.

Melroses · 09/01/2019 14:20

I used to live near an Indian sweet shop in Birmingham, back in the day and a table of those would look fabulous.

Not sure about the sweetie table idea otherwise.

diddl · 09/01/2019 14:21

Fudge & chocolate-oh yes!
(And haribo giant strawberries.)

My daughter had a very low key wedding with a small budget. She invited close friends and family only.
We spotted heart shaped box's of chocolates with little chocolate hearts in Heron or Home and Bargain. They were Thorntons but reduced as left over from Valentines day. We got a few and placed a box on each table.

My son and I printed off some photos of the happy couple with a wedding date on and fitted them to 50 mini love heart packets and spread them around the tables too. Looked really good and personalised it all. Most were eaten or taken by the end of the night. It worked out at about £1.50 each for the chocs so £15 for 10 box's and around £7 for the love hearts. She had a lovely wedding.
As the sweets were on the tables everyone got to have some if they wanted and it stopped children fromm messing with them too much.

HariboLecter · 09/01/2019 14:25

DH really wanted one, I wasn't too fussed but we had a few children at our wedding, so we did have one.
We ended up bringing a lot of sweets home with us.

Possibly DH's tactic all along Hmm Grin

LagunaBubbles · 09/01/2019 14:26

Any weddings I've been at with sweet tables then they've been all eaten mainly.

GahWhatever · 09/01/2019 14:27

We had one at our wedding (4 years ago) and the main sweet thieves were older ladies with their handbags crammed with sherbet flying saucers !!!
Ours was an informal barn indoor/outdoor wedding and we had lots of jars with little chalkboard labels tied on with string.
Don't make it available until everyone has had lots of real food so no-one is relying on sweets and booze and you'll find it to be popular I think.

Soph88 · 09/01/2019 14:28

I absolutely love a sweet table at a wedding! I went to a no kids wedding a couple of years ago and they had a sweet table they had put together themselves. Seemed to go down well.

JudasPrudy · 09/01/2019 14:28

I'd love that at my wedding but then I'd probably spend all evening scoffing sweeties rather than celebrating/mingling etc

JudasPrudy · 09/01/2019 14:29

You get big massive bags of sweets for very little on Amazon btw.

menztoray · 09/01/2019 14:29

Gah I was one of those!
