To ask about sweet tables at weddings

I love how the sweet section of buffets look at weddings . For anyone that hasn’t seen them it’s a load of jars filled with sweets with tongs and little bags to put them in. I really want one but I’m on a budget and also not wanting waste.

Do you or would you eat them at a wedding party?
If you had one at your own wedding was it eaten ?
Thanks

I won't lie to you, I'm thinking of doing hefty sweet bags as favours, as we've just realised what a lag there is between meal and end of the day- got to keep the energy up!!Grin

ScreamingValenta · 09/01/2019 13:17

I've never come across this, but if you put out some mint humbugs I'd eat them! I only like mint-flavoured sweets.

planespotting · 09/01/2019 13:20

A wedding I went to had sweets, little cakes, ice cream and coffee SmileSmile

We only had a cheapo wedding day and had a sweet table as it was thrown in by the venue with the cost of the rest of the decorations. There was barely anything left at the end of the night but we did have a lot of children there. We also hired a dj that did children’s entertainment too and he had them all playing games on the dancefloor in the boring bit where nobody dances before the buffet.

I love sweets so I'm always quite pleased to see sweets on offer , but would rather you spent money on food and wine than sweets if money is short.

When we got married the trend hadn’t really taken off. But my husband has a terrible sweet tooth and I’m awful for chocolate. So we had one and the centrepieces were various home made (me, mum, sil, mil, nan, Aunty, Aunty in law and hubbys cousin) treats - I made cupcakes, sil used Granny’s recipie for Mars bar squares, my Aunty Made her awesome shortbread.
The sweetie buffet was fairly cheap (I think it cost us £100) and everyone was picking at sweets through the evening and next day, we gave everyone who stayed over a bag of the remaining sweets (we had just enough) it went down a storm and we only had one child!

I really like the look of them but personally we didn't feel they were worth the price, not with a 4 course wedding breakfast, evening buffet and cake as well.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 09/01/2019 13:27

love them but you can easily do them yourselves much cheaper- ebay tubs etc.

PlumpSyrianHamster · 09/01/2019 13:28

I'm not middle class but I think they're naff and a waste. People want food at weddings, not a load of sweets. Plenty of people don't care for sweets, either.

HollowTalk · 09/01/2019 13:30

What about some little bags of sweets for the children for during the speeches?

trippingup · 09/01/2019 13:30

I've always seen them well used especially at weddings with kids or where there is a lot of time before a meal and you can help yourself. You can go to a cash and carry and bulk buy or order online and make it look nice by borrowing vases, jam jars, flower pots... decorate boxes, suitcases lined with cling film, bowls, something to go with your theme. You don't need much variety and could even home make your fudge! Enjoy!

menztoray · 09/01/2019 13:31

I went to a wedding with one. I ate lots of the sweets.

1forAll74 · 09/01/2019 13:32

Sweet tables are all a bit not needed, You usually have a proper meal,or a buffet at a wedding,, with things to eat !!

Rinoachicken · 09/01/2019 13:34

I’m getting married later this year and hadn’t come across this idea. Whilst I do love the idea of it, I definitely DONT love the idea of my two kids plus the many other kids that will be there overdosing on sugar and turning into wild rampaging savages for the entire evening! So I think I’ll be giving it a miss.

needsleepzzz · 09/01/2019 13:34

I had one at my wedding, was cleared within about 2 hours :-D
Everyone loved it

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 13:37

I went to the evening part of a wedding this year. They had a sweet table and it was really popular.

The adults supervised the children and nobody had more than their fair share.

MsSquiz · 09/01/2019 13:37

We didn't have a sweet table/buffet as I think most adults would maybe only have a few sweets but it's mainly something for the kids, and we didn't have loads of kids.

We chose to have a dessert buffet instead. We served our starter and main course, then had speeches, then our guests were told (by DH at the end of his speech) to follow me as I would be legging it next door to our dessert table.

It was amazing - we had brownies, little dessert pots, homemade marshmallows, mini lemon & banoffee tarts, donuts, pots of fresh strawberries & cream, etc. My plan was anything that wasn't finished at "dessert time" would be left available throughout the evening. And by the time I went up to bed at midnight, everything had gone!

MatildaTheCat · 09/01/2019 13:38

Large amounts of sweets filled with E numbers. Excited children. Wedding. What could possibly go wrong? Grin

I’d stick with small bags of decent quality sweeties which parents can more easily monitor if you want sweets.

TheFrequentNameChangingLady · 09/01/2019 13:38

If you've got lots of kids going then yes.
I've seen two and both were emptied but both weddings had lots of kids there.

InsomniacAnonymous · 09/01/2019 13:39

It sounds like something you would have at a small kid's birthday party. Confused

SuziQ10 · 09/01/2019 13:40

I did one at my W in July. I didn't think people would be very keen, especially after my deluxe 4 course with trio dessert... but in the evening after cake everyone was scoffing the sweets! Almost nothing was left. I'd deffo recommend it.

I went DIY ikea glass jars and picked up sweets wherever I found deals. The fizzy cola bottles and haribow strawberry's went down the best.

sar302 · 09/01/2019 13:41

We did little bags of sweets as favours - there wasn't one left!!

Sparklingbrook · 09/01/2019 13:41

The other big hit at the wedding was a photo booth. That was great fun.

Tidygirldml · 09/01/2019 13:42

We had one at ours and it was a massive hit!

Bought jars from ikea and the range and bought sweets and filled them ourselves!

Loads of positive comments on the day!

Worth it in my book xx

menztoray · 09/01/2019 13:44

Sounds from the very mixed comments that it depends on what your guests are like.
