I'm 32 weeks pregnant, OH lost his ID in November and hasn't ordered a new one yet as we are using all our spare money for this baby.
Now, OH smokes and because we are both 20 it is impossible to get served without ID, so i've been going in the shop for him. I usually get them in Tesco or get them delivered with online shopping, but popped into the co-op on our way home earlier, asked for his usual and the cashier loudly said 'I can't serve you, you're pregnant and shouldn't be smoking' in front of all the other customers making me feel embarassed. AIBU to think that this was unprofessional of him and he has no right to comment on what im buying!! maybe i'm just getting emotional about it because of hormones. I mean is he legally allowed to refuse to serve me ?

I’m confused as to why anybody thinks it’s okay to ask whether my OH works or not? Of course he works. Not that it is any of your business

@elliesm98

It’s nobodys business but yours and irrelevant anyway.

Smellbellina · 08/01/2019 23:12

Some of these responses 😂

ZogTheOrangeDragon · 08/01/2019 23:12

So is he not planning on being on your baby’s birth certificate then since he isn’t going to get any ID?

elliesm98 · 08/01/2019 23:13

@marilynslumroe

Are you lost? I have ID and had it out in my hand

Even the unemployed are legally allowed to smoke!

It is an open internet public forum. Posters can ask what they like within MNHQ guidelines.

@zogtheorangedragon

You don’t need ID to register a baby’s birth :)

They were rude however I have zero sympathy for smokers. Consider it to be a blessing in disguise.

I promise you that you do.

elliesm98 · 08/01/2019 23:16

@zogtheorangedragon

Well in England you most definitely don’t

Don’t be silly! It’s bad for the goat.

Rosehip10 · 08/01/2019 23:19

ID for both parents when registering a birth:

What you should take
You should take at least one form of identification when you go to the register office. You can use:

passport
birth certificate
deed poll
driving licence
proof of address (for example, a utility bill)
Council Tax bill
marriage or civil partnership certificate

You should also take your child’s personal child health record or ‘red book’ as some registrars may ask to see it.

greathat · 08/01/2019 23:19

Tell him it's time to quit. You don't want passive smoke for the baby and if you can't afford ID you can't afford fags!

TerriTummyTowels · 08/01/2019 23:20

Actually I don't think the shop keeper was BU about time more people took a stand

I think killing animals is wrong but I'm still going to slap your packets of bacon and beef across the barcode scanner..Confused

SillySallySingsSongs · 08/01/2019 23:20

You don’t need ID to register a baby’s birth

A quick google says you do need some form of ID. Here is the list from one council.

Your passport or birth certificate

Your marriage certificate, if applicable

An official document showing your name and current address, such as a driving licence or utility bill

A search of a few councils shows exactly the same.

A "friend" of mine and her oh smoke. Their kid was premature and has loads of health complications related to chest infections. Every time she posts a kids health update on Facebook I want to reply "maybe quitting smoking would help"

Theunsungsong · 08/01/2019 23:23

I thought a replacement provisional licence was only about £20, or about the cost of 3 packets of cigarettes.

lazyarse123 · 08/01/2019 23:25

It's not a legal reason to refuse a sale.

MaryDollNesbitt · 08/01/2019 23:25

I deliberately didn’t say intoxicated, SillySally Wink I can smell an alcoholic at 50 paces. I’ve served numerous people I’ve suspected of having serious dependencies over the years, but I still had to serve them providing they were not under the influence at the time of purchasing. They were going straight home to chug their litre bottles of paint thinner, get completely shit faced and destroy their livers, and we both knew it, but they were still paying customers and I still had to serve them, regardless of how I felt about it. It was not my job to cast judgement on them and refuse the sale because I couldn’t climb down from my moral high horse.

So yes, you can and should always refuse sales to those you believe to be under the influence, but they don’t need to be intoxicated at the time of sale for you to suspect a dependency, which was the point I was making Smile

hibbledibble · 08/01/2019 23:27

OH lost his ID in November and hasn't ordered a new one yet as we are using all our spare money for this baby.. Apart from the money he's wasting on cigarettes?

Agreed!

Your partner should be quitting smoking, as it increases the risk of SIDS.

Smellbellina · 08/01/2019 23:28

Good point @PositivelyPERF the goat seems to have been completely forgotten, won’t somebody please think of the goat!

PickAChew · 08/01/2019 23:28

Maybe if he's so desperate for his tabs, he'll get his arse in gear and sort out his ID, then.

My heart is not bleeding for you.
