I'm 32 weeks pregnant, OH lost his ID in November and hasn't ordered a new one yet as we are using all our spare money for this baby.
Now, OH smokes and because we are both 20 it is impossible to get served without ID, so i've been going in the shop for him. I usually get them in Tesco or get them delivered with online shopping, but popped into the co-op on our way home earlier, asked for his usual and the cashier loudly said 'I can't serve you, you're pregnant and shouldn't be smoking' in front of all the other customers making me feel embarassed. AIBU to think that this was unprofessional of him and he has no right to comment on what im buying!! maybe i'm just getting emotional about it because of hormones. I mean is he legally allowed to refuse to serve me ?

It is a hard position to defend. I doubt anyone would say they don't feel a gut reaction to seeing an obviously pregnant woman with a cigarette in her hand. I don't defend the choice to smoke in pregnancy but I do defend their right to make that choice.

I’m actually a bit depressed at how many people think policing the behaviour of pregnant women is OK.

SemperIdem · 09/01/2019 21:35

Schmoo

Note that the tone of the responses changed when the op mentioned that she is 20, so a young mum.

The snobbery on this thread is palpable.

Dutch1e · 09/01/2019 21:58

Absolutely agree. And equally fucking enraged that the FIRST PAGE ignored the appalling shopkeeper and started in on the SIDS risk associated with a smoking father. I hope the moralising posters enjoy short careers as failed shopkeepers

OP you are absolutely not being unreasonable, how dare that twat decide what you as an adult may or not buy.

Yabbers · 09/01/2019 22:08
  1. Ignore those judging here. You don’t have to explain yourself to them.
  1. Absolutely complain to the store manager. Preferably loudly in front of the cashier and other customers.

MarilynSlumroe"

Sure you want to give me that biscuit? The transfats alone could make you responsible for a death.

Ribbonsonabox · 09/01/2019 22:39

yanbu. People are dicks about pregnant women. I had a Starbucks barista try and tell me to have decaffeinated coffee when I ordered in Starbucks when I was pregnant. The coffee wasn't even for me as I dont drink coffee anyway it was for my friend.... but even if it was for me it's not his place to comment at all. I just glared at him and told him no, I want caffeinated coffee... and stood there till he made it.

She could have been buying the cigarettes for anyone. Her mum, dad, sister, best friend. Could have been a carer and doing the shopping for one of her disabled clients. It’s none of the bloke’s business.

As a PP said I do wonder why people who usually support loudly her body her choice are suddenly advocating this guys behavioir. She might have had an abortion booked in next day. What’s worse a fag or a termination?

Caucho · 09/01/2019 22:56

There’s loads of food stuff people are recommended to avoid when pregnant. Ditto alcohol. Should the checkout dude have a list and say sorry you can’t have that. Sushi no. Shellfish no. I read red meat is bad somewhere so am not serving you that either

longtimelurkerhelen · 09/01/2019 22:58

Good God, some you need to wind your necks in.

The reason someone asked if your OH works is because they want him to be unemployed so that you both fit into the workshy/benefit cheat category, that way they can continue to pass judgement.

Nagging anyone to give up smoking does not work. You can ask and tell them your concerns but ultimately it is up to them.

The shop worker was completely out of order, you should definitely complain.

Good luck. xx

toomanyeggs · 10/01/2019 11:17

Sure you want to give me that biscuit? The transfats alone could make you responsible for a death - @Dutch1e

So by that thinking if @MarilynSlumroe gave you a biscuit that you CHOSE to eat, and that killed you, she would be responsible? So she would, in fact be right to refuse to give it to you in order to prevent that happening, or at least prevent her part in it?

elliesm98 · 10/01/2019 12:52

Thanks for all the judgemental comments everyone I’ve just had to smoke a whole 20 pack of fags to calm myself down 😢

This mum to be seems to be enjoying it.

Nothisispatrick · 10/01/2019 13:14

Well after that reply I no longer believe this thread. What a load of bollocks.

Strokethefurrywall · 10/01/2019 13:25

Real thread or not, it's ironic that the trolls on this thread are the judgmental fuckwits rather more than the OP.

As a social experiment, this thread is a real eye opener as to how much people feel that female body autonomy is just that "until"...

Until you're a 'silly little 20 year old with a slacker boyfriend who smokes and probably doesn't work'.
Then body autonomy goes out the window and random strangers have every right to dictate what a pregnant woman should and should not do with their own bodies is the distinct vibe from this thread.

Interesting.

WhatToDoAboutWailmerGoneRogue · 10/01/2019 13:26

Yeah, that’ll really help your baby, OP.

We thought it was just your partner directly putting his baby at risk. Congratulations, you proved us wrong.

Willow2017 · 10/01/2019 13:47

FFS I think the op was joking, she doesnt smoke she is hardly going to smoke 20 in one go!

Strokethefurrywall
Completely agree.

You can have bodily autonomy until I say you cant!

joanmcc · 10/01/2019 14:37

Since when did calling someone "judgemental" become a trump card? Fucking right I'll judge someone harming a defenceless child.
