to hate reins for kids?

I almost choked on my lentil goulash when dh suggested buying kiddy reins for dd as she's now walking and beginning to enjoy her freedom. I do hope he was trying to wind me up.. Imho they are for lazy parents who could'nt be arsed chasing after naturally exuberant kids.....

I am aware that many parents are afraid of losing their kids.....but surely this is taking things to extremes. Apparently my MIL used them on dh, but she's an overweight control freak. I rest my case.

Oh god hatrick I do. Your description of your walk to nursery, brought it all back. DS1 used to go stiff as a board, and I'd really throw him in, apply knee etc and sometimes the hand too. Not pretty.

ahundredtimes · 28/06/2007 19:00

I mean I did!

ahundredtimes · 28/06/2007 19:01

Should have just bought the reins right? lol

nightowl · 28/06/2007 19:01

oh was just generally, not suggesting you put your 7 and 8 year old on reins lol.

ahundredtimes · 28/06/2007 19:03

I could sort of harness them nightowl and rig them up to a cart couldn't I? I'd love that. LOL.

nightowl · 28/06/2007 19:05

dd would be excellent for racing, that kid can RUN!

Oh god hatrick I wish I'd known about that floppy thing

We could chariot race nightowl. Sort of MN roman games event?

nightowl · 28/06/2007 19:07

it was like somthing out of a comedy trying to get dd in car seat..one arm in, other in, first one out, back in, second one out.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 28/06/2007 19:12

Hundred times - partly re the throwing them in but mainly at original poster.
Since you don't mind others in them then I bow respectfully and add that I too have kneed them in the middle to get them to bend. Have thought about putting DS in buggy and DD on reins and attaching her to buggy so I can stand on the back with a whip shouting mush! again

ahundredtimes · 28/06/2007 19:42

was my fault, I said I loathed them, but wasn't clear that I really don't give a fig what other people do. Also then realized in about 3 posts, that actually my Violent Approach to Road Safety doesn't really have much to recommend it

nightowl · 28/06/2007 19:55

see how this thread has slowed down now no-one is arguing?!!!

c'mon lets have a pretend fight.

ahundredtimes · 28/06/2007 19:56

Hmm. would rather have a toddler chariot race. I'll need to borrow a toddler though.

Chirpygirl · 28/06/2007 19:58

You are being totally unreasonable.
All this talk about 2,3 years olds is one thing but DD is only 16 months and I have had to use reins since she was 14 months. I don't like using the buggy for short walks to the park or shops so we walk, and try explaining to a 16 month old to hold your hand.
If I try and hold her hand she sits down, screams, and then throws herself backwards, cracking her head on the floor.
If I use reins she is independant, happy, chatty with people we pass and can investigate to her hearts content.

Oh, and I'm pregnant but would use them even if I wasn't, they are just too helpful.

nightowl · 28/06/2007 19:59

dont bother. i told you, dd is fast..no-one can beat us.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 28/06/2007 20:00

With that in mind why has no-one invented a buggy board for adults, wouldn't it be great to jump on going downhill as long as there was some sort of steering mechanism.

Chirpygirl · 28/06/2007 20:01

Hmm...a skateboard tied on with bungee cord might well work....

nightowl · 28/06/2007 20:01

accident waiting to happen with me im afraid. i have bugger all coordination.

Why not get an older toddler on the front with reins, strap them to the buggy with younger child in and you sit on skateboard attached at the back?
Rest for you, toddler gets workout and baby gets a ride.

Woudl also work with a dog I suppose, but wouldn't be as much fun.

If I hadn't had reins on dd coming back through Gatwick once, I'd have lost her disembarking from the plane/walking to baggage reclaim. As it was, I was hard-pushed to keep up with her speed and left my mum and sister miles behind me. The buggy had been confiscated at the plane door at the other end..... thank gawd for reins then is all I can say .

Lyrabelacqua · 28/06/2007 20:16

Lulamae, you do know you're an idiot don't you? Branding all mothers who use reins as "lazy parents who couldn't be arsed chasing after naturally exuberant kids....."
You haven't got a clue.
