to hate reins for kids?

I almost choked on my lentil goulash when dh suggested buying kiddy reins for dd as she's now walking and beginning to enjoy her freedom. I do hope he was trying to wind me up.. Imho they are for lazy parents who could'nt be arsed chasing after naturally exuberant kids.....

I am aware that many parents are afraid of losing their kids.....but surely this is taking things to extremes. Apparently my MIL used them on dh, but she's an overweight control freak. I rest my case.

troll?

Carmenere · 28/06/2007 16:25

Yes unusually judgemental even for mn

lulamae · 28/06/2007 16:25

come again Kathy?

Well when your naturally exuberant child makes a dash for the road, I hope you are quick enough to catch her.

coppertop · 28/06/2007 16:26

Either a wind-up or hopelessly naive.

Kathyis6incheshigh · 28/06/2007 16:27

Someone who posts deliberately controversial things for the purpose of attention seeking/starting a row.

lulamae · 28/06/2007 16:28

I simply do not wish to treat my child like a dog.

Troll or idiot, no, sorry, BOTH.

WaynettaSpice · 28/06/2007 16:29

Yes

RosaLuxembourg · 28/06/2007 16:29

No course you are not being unreasonable. Anyone would prefer to see their kid dead in the road than to have to restrict them in that humiliating way.

bozza · 28/06/2007 16:29

YABU

WaynettaSpice · 28/06/2007 16:30

How old is your child lulamae?

ThomCat · 28/06/2007 16:30

Yawn
PARP
TROLL
Boring
Been done before
Now get a life.

Marina · 28/06/2007 16:30

Mind you don't dislocate your toddler's elbow yanking her out of traffic when she bolts for it.
Reins actually help them keep their balance as they haven't got one arm lifted up to adult height

lulamae · 28/06/2007 16:30

Kathy, I was only reacting to dh's suggsetion, nobody in my family has ever been brought up with reins. And yes, I am quick, so there!

OP posts:
Marina · 28/06/2007 16:31

You may be able to run fast but I'm not sure I'd describe you as quick in other ways

NuttyMuffins · 28/06/2007 16:31

and have eyes in the back of your head hopefully.

Marne · 28/06/2007 16:31

It anoys me when people don't use reins, last year a young child (no older than 20 months) stepped off the pavement infront of my car, luckily i did'nt hit him, if i was going any faster than the 3omph speed limit i would have hit/killed him, if he was on reins this would'nt of happened.

Hulababy · 28/06/2007 16:33

When DD was thi age I lived in a busy city centre. Although Iam not a real fan of reins, and chose not to use them most of the time, there were occasions when I did need to, in order to keep my child safe.

Nothing to do with laziness. All to do with safety of a child - tarffic or my child getting seperated from me and lost were my reasons when I did occasionally used them.

at MIL comment. Completely irrelevant IMO.

allgonebellyup · 28/06/2007 16:34

hope your child doesnt make a run for it then, or you'll be eating your words..

nightowl · 28/06/2007 16:34

i used reins for dd.

i also feed her from the cat bowl and she sleeps in the shed.

ThomCat · 28/06/2007 16:35

Yep, people who use reins are 'lazy' and 'can't be arsed to chase after naturally exuberant kids', yep that's right love, spot on. Nothing to do with having a child that makes mad dashes for it while you try and handle other children, nothing to do with wanting to actual give them some independence whilst also keeping them safe.

If you haven't had an 18 month old who ran out in a road while you tried to get your child with SN's out of car / inb buggy whatever, then you don't know what a godsend they can be.

I'd never ever use them all the time, but now and then they havce been a godsend to me.

A 2 yr old in my area ran out between 2 cars the other day and was killed
Bet his mum wishes he'd been on reins.

lulamae · 28/06/2007 16:36

As I hardly ever see other mothers with reins, are they being unreasonable by not using them?

OP posts:
tiredemma · 28/06/2007 16:37

negligent would be a word would use to describe them, not unreasonable.

flibbertyjibbet · 28/06/2007 16:39

We've just been to the shops across several roads, with baby in pram and toddler on reins which is the only way he can be safe while I've got both hands pushing a pram up a steep hill. If I chase after my naturally exhuberant son I will be battered by old ladies for leaving my pram unattended.
I am now building a kennel for him.
Obviously OP is a parent of 1.
