To ask if anyone else is bemused by the reaction to Gregg's Vegan Sausage Roll?

Just to start this off I am a meat eater. I like my meat but, I am quite humoured by the reaction from social media about people insisting Greggs removing the Vegan Sausage Roll.

No one is making anyone eat a Vegan Sausage Roll. They havent taken the meat ones off the shelf.

Why are they insisting Greggs remove it?

MerryTwinkletoes · 05/01/2019 17:41

I find it bizarre how much media attention there's been for the fact that they're actually offering a vegan option let alone people getting offended with it Confused

Hefzi · 05/01/2019 17:41

Greggs must be rubbing their hands Grin

GreenThing · 05/01/2019 17:41

It's just marketing.

No one is really outraged. Grin

SleepingStandingUp · 05/01/2019 17:41

Who is?

PinkOboe · 05/01/2019 17:42

Greggs have very clever marketing people

TooManyPaws · 05/01/2019 17:42

Piers Wanker Morgan is, for a start.

blackteasplease · 05/01/2019 17:43

This is very funny...

insisting might have been the wrong word but, I have seen some pathetic reactions to this over the last two days.

I think it's great that they are offering vegetarian and vegan alternatives, but there is no such thing as a vegan sausage roll, sausage has to contain meat.

Polkapjs · 05/01/2019 17:47

I’m excited by the competition to Pound Bakery veggie sausage rolls which I love since Gregg’s cheese and onion pasties lost their way

Thesearmsofmine · 05/01/2019 17:47

I think Greggs are clever. Someone on my Facebook shared a funny reaction from poundshop bakery who apparently also do a vegan sausage roll (and have for some time) which is cheaper.

GobblersKnob · 05/01/2019 17:49

Having been a vegan for a long time, I'm not even a tiny bit surprised.

But also think it's excellent marketing for Greggs, and that their social media manager/team deserve all the prizes.

YouLostTheGame · 05/01/2019 17:49

I find it strange that anyone cares tbh, I’m more upset at what they have done to the festive bake this year! It was never sickly and creamy and the cheese and onion pasties are rank now, they used to be my fave.

OutPinked · 05/01/2019 17:51

I worked in Greggs years ago as a student (worst job I ever had but that’s another story). Had a fair few customers asking for vegan options, we had to tell them to write to or call customer services with their ideas. Evidently enough of them did that...

I think it’s great marketing for Greggs personally. There will be an abundance of curious meat eaters wanting to try it as well as veggies, vegans, Jews and Muslims.

Thesearmsofmine · 05/01/2019 17:55

I wish they still did ham and cheese bakes, they were my favourite.

ChesterGreySideboard · 05/01/2019 17:56

sausage has to contain meat.

Who says?

Triskaidekaphilia · 05/01/2019 17:58

Mine too! Discontinuing those was the real outrage Grin

Triglesoffy · 05/01/2019 17:58

sausage has to contain meat

Tell that to Linda McCartney.

cariadlet · 05/01/2019 17:59

^this

Offering customers more choice can only be a good thing. Piers Morgan was a pathetic idiot to be so offended, but his tweets just created great publicity for Greggs (and the other fast food places who decided that it would be good publicity for them to tweet replies that would wind him up).

NoAprilFool · 05/01/2019 17:59

sausage has to contain meat

Nonsense, it’s just a shape. Glamorgan sausages don’t contain meat.

ChesterGreySideboard · 05/01/2019 18:00

I have never understood why meat eaters get so pissy about sausage and burger shaped foods that don’t have meat in them.
What shape should vegi or vegan food be?
Should it be called a vegan long cylindrical food shape roll?

flameycakes · 05/01/2019 18:01

Piers morgan complaining is a publicity stunt x

Hefzi · 05/01/2019 18:01

Isn't the sausage containing meat thing from one of the Yes, Prime Minister episodes? Emulsified High Fat Offal Tube Grin

Eliza9917 · 05/01/2019 18:02

Greggs is rank anyway. First they changed the veg pasty, then they wouldn't butter a baguette for me when I bought a baguette and soup. Then they took the salt out of the sausage rolls. Then, the last straw was when I went in my local one and I found out that they don't sell rolls or bread. They are were supposed to be a bakery FFS Hmm
