To ask if anyone else is bemused by the reaction to Gregg's Vegan Sausage Roll?

Just to start this off I am a meat eater. I like my meat but, I am quite humoured by the reaction from social media about people insisting Greggs removing the Vegan Sausage Roll.

No one is making anyone eat a Vegan Sausage Roll. They havent taken the meat ones off the shelf.

Some meat eaters are kicking off about the vegan sausage roll, some militant vegans are getting in everyone's face about veganism. Live and let live people, it's personal choice either way - I wish folk would just make their choice and shut up about it Confused

Eliza9917 · 07/01/2019 10:20

I heard the pastry was less flaky lol.

I also read that quorn is really bad for peoples stomachs and you need to build up resistance to eating it or it'll give you diarrhoea. Good luck to all those non vegetarians out there trying one for the bandwagon ride.

TheFaerieQueene · 07/01/2019 10:30

It’s marketing. If anyone is really that upset about a vegan pastry they must be a raving idiot and I doubt they have the appropriate skills to engage with a wide enough media circle for it to make an iota of difference.

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 10:33

What a load of fuss!
I suspect that if Piers Morgan wasn't in tv he wouldn't have give a hoot about Greggs and their pastries. It's all drumming up publicity.
I had the vegan sausage roll on Saturday and it was nice. My meat loving son said ' it's not so bad' when he tried it which, being a hardy farming type Northerner is seen as high praise!!

I'd buy it again.

BovrilOverkillOhMyInsides · 07/01/2019 10:33

@ChesterGreySideboard

I have never understood why meat eaters get so pissy about sausage and burger shaped foods that don’t have meat in them.
What shape should vegi or vegan food be?
Should it be called a vegan long cylindrical food shape roll?

THISSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!

And FFS, why the FUCK are certain meat eaters feeling so effing threatened by a food item. Jesus wept.

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 10:38

The whole thing is a publicity stunt. The majority of Greggs don’t even sell them apparently - neither of the two in my town do and said that they’re available only in a select few stores and that it’s only a temporary addition to their menu anyway
Is it regionally selected. We had no problem getting one and my friends werr posting pictures with theirs bought from different Gregg's around the Nort West.

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 10:46

Exactly, very strange.

From my point of view Gregg's and McDonald's with their vegan happy meal are just tapping into a buisness market. The vegan pound is worth the same as one that comes from a meat eater. They would be foolish not to cater for vegans.
They all have market researchers working what the next trend is to keep them in the game. Veganism is huge at the moment. I went into WH Smith's last week and the number of cookbooks for vegan cooking was unbelievable so if course it makes sense for food businesses to cater for vegans.

I just don't get the outrage.

lynnepot · 07/01/2019 11:05

Its all the clickbait articles that is prompting these pointless vegan arguments. The clickbait is designed to provoke people and create a debate for the sake of clicking onto an article and getting more traffic for the adverts on the article.

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 07/01/2019 11:08

PM is just a wheezing, bloated bag of shit. His opinions are no more authentic than my neighbours two inch nails and I can't bring myself to give a toss about anything that scabby assclown feels strongly about.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 07/01/2019 11:25

I think was disappointed to find out they are made from Quorn and not soya. I’m bloody allergic to Quorn so still no sausage rolls for this vegetarian Sad

lynnepot · 07/01/2019 11:40

Are you allergic to all quorn produce then fish?

cushioncovers · 07/01/2019 11:51

Phillip Woollen makes some excellent points on business and the profits margins and how veganism fits in to it all. He is vegan and an environmental activist and a ex high bod of citi bank Australia. His fb page is brilliant well worth a follow.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 07/01/2019 18:38

It’s all made from the same ‘mold’ so I think I would be allergic to all Quorn products. I get an itchy rash across my forehead mainly, my throat swells up (feels the same way as when you get swollen glands during a bad cold/ tonsillitis etc) and my tounge gets itchy.

It took a few times to realise it was Quorn causing the reaction. It happened the first time with Quorn mince the first time but I assumed it was the jar of sauce I was using at the time rather than the Quorn. Then it happened again (twice) with the fillets so I know for sure it’s the Quorn and not the sauce. I am quite sensitive to mold anyway and it makes me feel quite unwell and a wheezy if I’m in a room with mold on the walls.

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 18:48

I know a lot of people through work, family, social groups etc and I can't think of one person who gives a negative shit about this.
The vegans and veggies are interested and the meat eaters don't seem bothered because it doesn t affect them in any way what so ever.
It's just mostly media outrage.
Nobody was outraged with their Mexican Bean wrap which is suitable for vegans!

tierraJ · 07/01/2019 18:52

Greggs making vegan food is nothing new, I used to like their vegetable pasties until I went on a diet.

Badbadbunny · 07/01/2019 18:52

Offering a choice is never a bad thing. What really annoyed me is that at my son's school, there is only the option of a veggie sausage roll since they banned pork products - now that really is out of order!

Seniorcitizen1 · 07/01/2019 19:05

If there is mo meat in it it can not be a sausage roll as sausage is a mix if meat and other stuff. In some countries I have heard it is illegal to give products a meat based name where they don’t contain meat such ss burger or haggis. This new greggs product is a plant roll. The Hungry Horse chain has a dish called vegetraian fish and chips - hallumi and chips!!

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 19:13

Seniorcitizen1
Well the Linda McCartney range of 'sausages' have been doing well for many years and the Glamorgan sausage, a veggie sausage goes back to the mid 1800's.

The original meanings of words do change over time so people need to stop being so pedantic about everything.

notacooldad · 07/01/2019 19:16

badbunny I understand your frustration but I think this could be down to costing and efficiency. Nearly everyone can eat a veggie sausage ( excluding allegeies ) but not everyone can eat a pork product therefore it seems like they are catering for everyone in the cheapest way.

ManonBlackbeak · 07/01/2019 19:16

It's been amazing publicity for Greggs. There was a massive queaue outside the one in our town the other day, I'm going try one when I get a chance. I do love Greggs though, my food guilty pleasure for sure.

bengalcat · 07/01/2019 19:17

I’m not a vegetarian but senior citizens ‘ plant roll ‘ doesn’t attract me at all although that’s likely what it is - I would however eat a vegetarian sausage roll and would assume it looks to all intensive purposes like a sausage roll but the preface of vegetarian would indicate to me it’s not meat/ pork or ‘ whatever meaty monstrosity ‘ they choose to put in it

LordProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 07/01/2019 19:19

I don’t understand why people are getting upset by it. If they are. I’m assuming it’s just a publicity stunt and I’m curious to try it - I love pastry.

I saw a bit on social media about Piers Morgan throwing one up. So they can’t be all that bad then.

CoughLaughFart · 07/01/2019 19:20

I used to be quite partial to a greggs veggie paste, but they changed the recipe and they are bloody awful now

Agreed - they’re so disappointing now Angry

CoughLaughFart · 07/01/2019 19:21

But this isn’t one of them. Hope that helps.

Singlenotsingle · 07/01/2019 19:25

PM: I tried one of Gregg's vegan sausage rolls and it was horrible. I threw it up again!
British public: Ooooh, we must try it! ( forms a long queue outside Gregg's)
