Feeding my kids raw chicken??

NotUmbongoUnchained · 05/01/2019 14:05

I don’t really know how to react to this, I fact I didn’t react at all I just took my kids, said goodbye and left.

A school mum has offered to have my kids over for lunch so I could attend an appointment today. Really nice of her, really appreciate it.

When I went to get them they were eating still and I went to sit with them at the table to see my two year old about to stick a piece of pink slimy chicken into his mouth. I made him give it to me then noticed that all the kids had undercooked chicken on their plates. I pointed this out to their mum and she laughed and said “Oh yeah they were really hungry and I didn’t have time to cook the drumsticks through properly so I just pulled all the bits that looked cooked off the bone.”

Aibu to think she’s a fucking idiot?? I was so stunned I just said we needed to go! Hoping they don’t get food poisoning Sad

It here was a case some years ago of an outbreak of bacteria food poisoning at schools and a little boy died after the outbreak many children were ill and it was traced back to the butcher that supplied the school I can't think what area or the exact year but properly cooked and cleanly prepared food is essential especially with young children and the pregnant and elderly

flumpybear · 05/01/2019 15:43

I'd be inducing vomiting - fucking dick parent she is ! Never trust her and tell your mates!!

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/01/2019 15:44

Pork isn't the same as chicken and doesn't have to be cooked to 'well done' - it can be cooked just to 'medium rare'. Clearly, you'd need to be able to check the internal temperature and not everyone wants to be faffing about with meat thermometers so would just cook it right through to be on the safe side, but it's not true to say that it isn't safe otherwise.

Serial just to save you from panic next time - NHS advice is now that young children can safely have raw or lightly cooked eggs as long as they are lion-stamped:

Serialweightwatcher · 05/01/2019 15:48

ThanksItHasPockets - thank you for that, but I felt so dreadful about it because I wasn't concentrating and only noticed when he was halfway through - I've been so particular with dates/food hygiene/hand washing since they were born, which is not a bad thing but can send you a bit batty sometimes making sure you're doing the right thing by them (so different when you only have yourself to think of/blame if things go wrong) - they're both teenagers now, so other more worrying problems lol

macaroniandpizza · 05/01/2019 15:49

Shes an utter tube for feeding anyone let alone young kids raw chicken!! Id be really angry as the kids could end up not well

Stardustinmyeyes · 05/01/2019 15:50

The outbreak was in Wishaw Scotland people ate meat contaminated with e-coli it was in 1996 and 21 people died. It's the worst out break of e-coli that the world has ever seen

kaytee87 · 05/01/2019 15:53

@Stardustinmyeyes I remember that! I was about 9 and I remember my mum sending me to school with packed lunches for a while (even though we don't live in wishaw)

Serialweightwatcher · 05/01/2019 15:54

BrightYellowDaffodil I always see chefs preparing pinkish pork and years ago it was said to cook it thoroughly which just stuck with me - having said that, I could eat it like that and not be too worried about it, but this woman with the chicken, especially to serve to children ... just can't get my head round the stupidity and it's so bloody dangerous Angry

Livingthedream44 · 05/01/2019 15:56

Does she not realise the effects of eating under cooked chicken?
I just don't get why someone would do that.
How did she react when you stopped your children eating it?
Definitely steer clear of her.

agnurse · 05/01/2019 16:03

Undercooked chicken is indeed VERY dangerous due to risks of salmonella. (As an aside about Campylobacter - while I'm not familiar with it contaminating chicken, it can be carried by puppies. If you have a new furry friend, make sure your children wash their hands before they eat after they've petted the puppy. Salmonella can also be carried by reptiles, so children under 5 shouldn't be handling them and children over 5 should wash their hands after petting them.) Chicken and turkey actually shouldn't be washed because the evidence is showing that this actually INCREASES bacterial contamination.

MsTSwift · 05/01/2019 16:04

Christ. My big healthy at the time 20 something dh was in bed for a week in a hell of a state and not right for weeks after eating dodgy chicken in a Moroccan restaurant (subsequently shut down). We figured what he had could have killed a frail person or child.

MsTSwift · 05/01/2019 16:06

I’m quite lax about eggs and vegetables (thought recently confirmed no listeria in British eggs now and veg usually fine unless visibly dodgy) but I’m surgical about chicken and pork.

StarlightIntheNight · 05/01/2019 16:12

I would be absolutely furious. How stupid could this mum be??? OMG. I would send her information regarding raw chicken and how serious it is giving it to children.

Teddy1970 · 05/01/2019 16:14

Bloody stupid women..how irresponsible, eating raw chicken can make people seriously ill.

Teddy1970 · 05/01/2019 16:14

woman

Andromeida59 · 05/01/2019 16:19

Unfortunately, I've seen quite a few posts where people a take pictures of chicken "sushi". There really are stupid people about. She was being very U to feed it to children.

PenguinPandas · 05/01/2019 16:25

Really stupid. Had camylobacta once from raw chicken from undercooked kebab noticed too late - took 10 days to show up and very ill for 2 weeks. Though another time served a chicken kiev in Cuba and realised too late eating red chicken and fine.

Hope they are all OK, at least you married a doctor.

Doggydoggydoggy · 05/01/2019 16:25

Chicken sushi...?
🤮

OneStepSideways · 05/01/2019 16:29

I hope your kids are ok. Hopefully they didn't eat the raw bits!

I'd be tempted to contact social services about this, as the woman's children are at risk of getting seriously ill. Neglect is often due to ignorance. Social services can give her advice about safe cooking or book her onto a food hygiene course. It sounds like she needs support!

limitedperiodonly · 05/01/2019 16:30

Of course the panic is over Doggydoggydoggy.

The OP says her doctor husband advises observation and she talked about buying pull-ups and added a jokey exclamation mark.

Therefore why should I or any one else get worked up about it?

Or do you think her doctor husband doesn't know what he's talking about?

He is a properly qualified medical doctor, isn't he NotUmbongoUnchained? And that is the advice he gave you about your children, isn't it? Because he doesn't sound too fussed to me.

If you doubt his medical opinion I suggest you seek another one rather than wasting time posting on Mumsnet.

Doggydoggydoggy · 05/01/2019 16:40

Well what else could he advise?
Aside from inducing vomiting there is nothing to do but observe and wait.
That doesn’t mean panic over though.
It means observe and hope everything’s works out okay.

Why should anyone worry about it?

Because more than 70% of raw chickens in the UK are infected with campylobacter perhaps?

Because food poisoning can take a few days to show up and it can be really really dangerous, fatal even?
Especially for a child?!

And because there is a parent out there endangering others safety?

Lovemusic33 · 05/01/2019 16:42

Hopefully they will be ok. I think some people are panicking a little, hopefully they didn’t eat much, I would be pushing loads of fluids through them in hope to flush it through quicker.

I have known people eat raw chicken and not get ill. No way would I be feeding anything undercooked to any child (or person) especially chicken.

Fingers crossed they will be fine x

limitedperiodonly · 05/01/2019 16:43

The outbreak was in Wishaw Scotland people ate meat contaminated with e-coli it was in 1996 and 21 people died. It's the worst out break of e-coli that the world has ever seen

But we're not talking about E.Coli or botulism, are we Stardustinmyeyes. I'm not saying that other forms of food poisoning cannot also cause devastating or fatal results.

NotUmbongoUnchained says her husband is a doctor and appears to be okay with observation and pull-up pants.

So I'm going to take his expert advice and wait for her to update on their progress. Anything else would be a bit foolish.

Hoopaloop · 05/01/2019 16:46

Medium rare chicken is fine.
