Feeding my kids raw chicken??

NotUmbongoUnchained · 05/01/2019 14:05

I don’t really know how to react to this, I fact I didn’t react at all I just took my kids, said goodbye and left.

A school mum has offered to have my kids over for lunch so I could attend an appointment today. Really nice of her, really appreciate it.

When I went to get them they were eating still and I went to sit with them at the table to see my two year old about to stick a piece of pink slimy chicken into his mouth. I made him give it to me then noticed that all the kids had undercooked chicken on their plates. I pointed this out to their mum and she laughed and said “Oh yeah they were really hungry and I didn’t have time to cook the drumsticks through properly so I just pulled all the bits that looked cooked off the bone.”

Aibu to think she’s a fucking idiot?? I was so stunned I just said we needed to go! Hoping they don’t get food poisoning Sad

I am guessing she doesn't understand the risks. It was very nice of her to offer to have your children so I think I'd chalk it up to ignorance rather malice.

WeCameToDance · 05/01/2019 14:42

Wow. Just wow. Honestly I think sometimes I take common sense for granted. It would never ever cross my mind that I could leave my dc with a trusted person and have them feed my child raw chicken. I bet it never crossed your mind either. Theres not a lot you can do now other than hope the bits they ate were ok and keep a really close eye on them. I hope they they are ok op!

LimitIsUp · 05/01/2019 14:42

Ah okay, thanks Jezzifishie, I am probably being a bit slow on the uptake today

TheDarkPassenger · 05/01/2019 14:44

I would have been visibly seething. What the actual hell? Genuine question but should op tell someone? Like she’s putting her kids in danger!

Nothisispatrick · 05/01/2019 14:48

Omg what about her own children? That’s really worrying.

x2boys · 05/01/2019 14:51

Obviously a stupid thing to do , but tell who exactly Passenger?

whatsnewchoochoo · 05/01/2019 14:54

I wonder if there is a chance she really doesn't know the risks? Maybe she has some learning problems ?

pandoraphile · 05/01/2019 14:59

I'm another one who burns chicken to the point of edible because I'm so paranoid about it. BUT - my exes family have a BBQ at least once a week in summer and they will often eat undercooked chicken or use the same utensils they had for cutting it after it's been cooked some more. As far as they were concerned I was a vegetarian Grin They never got ill though and we're going nearly 20 years here!

pandoraphile · 05/01/2019 14:59

*INedible That should say!

OhmydearGod · 05/01/2019 15:01

I've had Campylobacter poisoning. Oh my god, i didn't realise that I had so much inside of me ready to come out! It started with a crippling headache.

Vixxxy · 05/01/2019 15:02

What an utter dickhead.

Oysterbabe · 05/01/2019 15:04

I'm slack as fuck but this is beyond even me.

onalongsabbatical · 05/01/2019 15:05

OP, your husband's a dr, I think he needs to tell her as a matter of public duty, campylobacter could kill her children, this is no joke. Let alone salmonella. Dear god.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 05/01/2019 15:06

That is shocking, both that there are people who are ignorant about basic food safety and that they’re willing to foist the effects of that ignorance on others. While I will often eat stuff past its use by etc. but I am fastidious about chicken - no washing, surfaces/implements that have come into contact with raw meat are washed at high temperature, hands washed carefully after handling and ALWAYS cooked through. ANy hint of it being off and it goes in the bin. I abhor food waste but food poisoning and campylobacter can be very serious.

Re the washing, chicken doesn’t need to be washed and washing means that bacteria can get splashed onto the surrounding area without you realising.

donajimena · 05/01/2019 15:09

Limit someone upthread said how do people get to adulthood and not know these things. People still wash chicken was my response but it was actually out of context so I apologise.
I've been researching food poisoning in the home as part of my degree and despite all advice to the contrary some people still believe in washing chicken.

Aeroflotgirl · 05/01/2019 15:11

Oh god my MIL was ill for 6 months after eating undercooked chicken at a buffet, chicken and pork are usually dodgy, I always err on the side of caution and over cook a bit and keep checking the core.

Drum2018 · 05/01/2019 15:14

Please tell this woman how dangerous it was to feed the kids raw chicken. She's obviously a bit dim.

Til89 · 05/01/2019 15:16

Ugh. How can people not know you shouldn’t eat raw chicken? Hopefully the kids don’t get sick.

Celebelly · 05/01/2019 15:19

ShockShockShockShock Wtf?! I'm generally laid back about food but this is awful! DP wields his meat thermometer if there's ever a smidge of doubt about chicken!

BlueEyedBengal · 05/01/2019 15:24

Who doesn't know that the worst most dangerous thing you can eat is undercooked poultry. Ignorance is no excuse everyone knows that and if she feeds that to your kids I fear for the safety of her own. Watch out for any sign of the slightest look of illness and get treatment as soon as spotted as that bug can be the most dangerous with small children I hope all is well.

limitedperiodonly · 05/01/2019 15:25

I think we can all calm down seeing as the OP says her husband is a doctor and doesn't seem too fussed.

Luckily my husbands a doctor so he’ll be watching them closely! Might have to think about putting pull-ups on them tonight just incase!

Is that what your husband, the doctor, really said NotUmbongoUnchained? In that case, I think it's panic over, isn't it?

But yes, I would have taken it away from them and never let them go round her house again.

BlueEyedBengal · 05/01/2019 15:27

I also think you need to enlighten her to the danger of undercooked poultry for the safety of her family tell her to read up on the web about the danger of this habit.

Doggydoggydoggy · 05/01/2019 15:31

Panic over?
No, not at all.
Food poisoning bugs can take up to 72 hours I believe to show up.
They are not always immediate/a few hours after ingestion of the dodgy item.

Tbh, the pull ups comment just shows how ill informed of the danger the OP is.

I don’t mean that disrespectfully but campylobacter and the like are very very serious.
As people have said recovery can take months, and this is adults.

onalongsabbatical · 05/01/2019 15:34

Campylobacter causes 110 deaths a year in the UK.

Serialweightwatcher · 05/01/2019 15:36

Omg how dumb of her ... I once felt terrible for 3 days, panicking because I realised my 5 year old's boiled egg was a little bit mushy on the white ... who the heck nowadays doesn't know that chicken/pork/turkey in particular needs to be cooked thoroughly Confused
