To admit I didn't vote in the Brexit Referendum?

I'm one of the 28% who didn't vote. Anyone else?

The government, rather stupidly, gave us a referendum. Those of us that voted did so in the belief that what we were voting for was the correct choice.

Anything that has happened since is entirely down to the government. The referendum was advisory - they didn't have to act on it. They didn't have to trigger article 50 until they were better prepared. Food shortages, lorry jams and all the rest isn't inevitable if the government took steps to avoid it.

What is becoming increasingly apparent is that this was too big a decision to give to us. The responsibility for that lies with our government.

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:10

Imo, we who didn’t vote are the sensible ones.

bellinisurge · 06/01/2019 17:12

Think you are in a minority with that view @Clueing4looks . You could either have made a stronger majority for Leave or a majority for Remain.

Are you happy with the decisions others took on your behalf?
Do you leave all choices to others or just national elections?

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:18

Why was it up to me to make the governments decision for them? Too much responsibility was given to people who didn’t have a clue.

There was over a million more votes for leave than remain. I reckon the split would have been the same if it was a 100% turnout

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:21

@ta1kinpeace I’m neither happy or sad. Just relieved it has nothing to do with me.

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 17:21

Are you happy with how your elected representatives assuming you vote at general elections are handling things?

bellinisurge · 06/01/2019 17:28

@Clueing4looks you're basing your analysis of the outcome had there been a 100% turnout on what ?
You don't want to take any responsibility for what is happening but you should do. Other people will do it for you. Although I imagine you don't give a shit.
Meh, you made your non-choice and we are all stuck with it.

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:28

I didn’t vote for my MP (David Davies) but he seems to be on the ball with doing what he thinks is the right thing.

Which is what exactly?

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:31

Holding the referendum was the dumbest thing the Tory party ever did. Why should I be forced to vote for a decision I want no part of? Why should I be made to feel responsible for any of it? It wasn’t my mistake.

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 17:34

But you support your MP who is an ERG member?

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:39

I didn’t vote for him, no. He has about 2 policies I agree with. But he seems one of the ones who tried to get the other members to support mays deal.

bellinisurge · 06/01/2019 17:40

@Clueing4looks - if I met you in real life I'd shrug my shoulders at you being so apathetic. You don't get out of any negative consequences of Brexit by saying I never bothered to vote.
If your MP is David "Quit in a flounce when things get tough " Davies, you're welcome to him.

User758172 · 06/01/2019 17:40

@Clueing4looks

Abstain, vote to remain, vote to Leave... you can’t win no matter what you do!

David Davies is not the Brexit Bulldog. Less thick. More dangerous.

WeAreTheCrystalGems · 06/01/2019 17:50

What's the point in freaking out? That ship has sailed.

Thanks for the info on food by the way. I would imagine that the countries currently providing us with food won't want to lose that revenue? Although I take your point about the transition period.

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 17:52

It wasn’t that I never bothered. I chose not to. Would have been a lot better if nobody voted at all.

bellinisurge · 06/01/2019 17:54

Then @Clueing4looks , you should have spoiled your paper. They have to count even spoiled papers. Imagine if we had all spoiled our papers.

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 18:22

That would make as much difference as betting ‘don’t know’ on a coin flip.

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 18:34

Out of interest, if Proportional Representation were to come out of this debacle - so that EVERY vote counted - would you support it and then vote in each election?

Clueing4looks · 06/01/2019 18:42

I might have the wrong end of the stick but I understand PR to mean that the minority voted for still get a representation. Is that not what happens in our general elections anyway? Forgive me if I’m thinking of the wrong thing.

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 18:50

PR means that the seats in the parliament are allocated according to the percentage of votes cast nationally.

So if Labour get 35% of the national vote, they get 35% of the MPs
if the Green arty get 5% of the national vote they get 5% of the MPS
even if those votes are thinly spread across the country.

It pretty much demolishes "safe seats" and means EVERYBODYs vote counts towards the outcome.

The UK has first past the post
the winner could get 40% of the votes
then next three each get 20% - so 60% of votes count for nothing

Ta1kinPeace · 06/01/2019 19:02

In 2015 a member of parliament was elected having won less than 25% of the votes cast in that constituency .......

I didn't vote. I didn't feel I knew enough about it, despite being a reasonably-educated lawyer. The ramifications were not clear, and there was a lot of scaremongering.

If we had the chance to vote again, I'd vote 'leave'. Without hesitation.
