To hate red trousers on men?

This seems to be a status marker meaning I am very posh, so it doesn't matter if I look like a total nob.

I can't say that I have a strong opinion on red trousers, abacucat, as you don't really see them in Liverpool. But I agree with you that people are very quick to judge men in sportswear.

Returning2thesceneofthecrime · 06/01/2019 04:53

BeekyChitch would claret be a reasonable compromise, do you think?

Clionba · 06/01/2019 06:47

I have 2 pairs of bright red jeggings. Bloody love em.

MissSusanScreams · 06/01/2019 09:30

Someone can come from a less privileged class and still be a nasty, narrow-minded, prejudiced bully.

I totally agree.

But if you point that out you get accused of pearl clutching.

It’s pretty disappointing the narrow boxes put each other into. Some of the nicest, most generous and helpful people I know are frightful poshos. I often find the Hyacinth Bucket types much more stand offish, judgey and small minded.

abacucat · 06/01/2019 09:40

I am amazed at the reactions to this post.
Every few days on MN there is a thread mocking some style choice that is more common amongst working class people, and people usually can't pile on fast enough to support it. But mocking and pillorying poor people seems to be a bit of a national sport in Britain.

OP you come across as very odd and fractious. It’s as if you’ve started a thread about red trousers, but really you’re desperate for someone to mention Primark, or anything remotely to do with “the poor” so that you can fly off the handle and go off on an unhinged rant about how you feel discriminated against - ra ra ra!

Relax - they are only trousers. Many people in all all walks of life wear bad clothes, but they harm nobody. I haven’t seen red or mustard trousers in years actually, even in Knightsbridge. Maybe it’s more a posh countryside thing, like those green coats, but frankly I couldn’t care less. Why do you?

Bowchicawowow · 06/01/2019 10:13

Do you have any opinions on anything Paloma?

Pa10ma · 06/01/2019 10:19

Definitely, but not trousers.

abacucat · 06/01/2019 10:32

Relax they are only trousers?
I am hardly foaming at the mouth here or mounting a campaign. And no I did not post this to expose the classism on MN, that has just happened.

Whisky2014 · 06/01/2019 10:37

Well, you did. Your post was about red trousers being a status marker (about class) and that you hate them.

Pa10ma · 06/01/2019 10:44

The thing is, jeans or tracksuit bottoms are not default for everyone OP. That’s all really. I mean, many European men (Spanish, Italians) etc may tend to wear chinos or brown / navy trousers with a shirt and the draped over the shoulders sweater thing on a weekend just to hang out with the family. It’s not trying to be posh. That’s just normal for them.

abacucat · 06/01/2019 10:52

Well aware that jeans and tracksuit bottoms are not default options. DP does not wear jeans and has 1 pair of tracksuit bottoms to play sport in. He still does not wear red trousers.

What a grim thread this is. You need to deal with that chip on your shoulder OP, it’s so enormous that it’s visible from space.

Boom76 · 06/01/2019 10:56

I despise inverted snobbery

dapplegrey · 06/01/2019 10:57

This.

abacucat · 06/01/2019 11:00

Looking forward to seeing you all on threads mocking the style choices of some working class, and objecting strongly to it. Although I won't hold my breath. Especially as there has bee mocking on this thread already of style choices of some working class people.

The first time I met a man, it was Peter Tatchell, wearing horrible mustard coloured trousers, I felt sorry for him. I assumed he was too poor to afford decent trousers. I didn't understand the posh markers then

Peter Tatchell- that would the Australian Peter Tatchell who was the far left Labour candidate for Bermondsey? The Peter Tatchell who I understand still lives in a council flat? The Peter Tatchell who endorsed Corbyn in the leadership election?

You think his choice of mustard trousers was a "posh marker"?

Eemamc · 06/01/2019 11:07

My dad is not posh, but now has an array of very colourful trousers. He worked really hard at a very working class job from the age of 16 until he retired, then was “blessed” with needing a double heart bypass the year after. Fortunately he is as fit as a flea now. He had a very navy uniform he had to wear for so long, I kind of see his very colourful trouser choices as I can wear the bloody well what I like now! On Christmas Day he arrived wearing pale pink chinos. As a teenager I would have been mortified, but now it’s just funny, and i’M just happy that he is well and happy. His red trousers are probably the least offensive tbh! Not all men in red trousers are posh twats for the record...my dad is just lovely.

MargueritaPink · 06/01/2019 11:09

No there has not. Some people, including me, have said they find tracksuit bottoms unattractive. You have spun that into "mocking the working class people"

Whisky2014 · 06/01/2019 11:12

Why do you keep comparing clothes to what your husband wears? He isn't setting the standard for everyone else :s
You seem to live in a bubble.

NonaGrey · 06/01/2019 11:14

And no I did not post this to expose the classism on MN, that has just happened.

That’s a bit disingenuous OP. You didn’t start a thread saying “Why do some men wear red trousers I think they look silly”

If you had, you’d no doubt have had lots of people quite cheerfully agreeing with you.

You started a thread specfically saying that you disliked red trousers because you think that men wear them to indicate that they are posh.

That’s an entirely different thing.

Eemamc · 06/01/2019 11:15

...all colourful trousers my dad owns are in a chino style, purchased from M&S natch! He also likes to co-ordinate with a colourful sock choice also.

PlatypusPie · 06/01/2019 11:27

I’m still wondering, from early on in this unpleasant thread, what on earth is wrong with dark green cords ? Subdued in hue and comfortable - you’d have to seriously seeking offence to criticise those.

And as for the main whinge - why pick on the clothing choice of some people and present it with such faux moral indignation ? The OPs enormous chip on her shoulder reflects badly on her, not on those people who choose to look a bit more cheerful in their leisure hours.

Fontofnoknowledge · 06/01/2019 11:28

Big family party today. DH has asked 'what shall I wear'..

This thread sprang to mind and he is now dressed in Beautiful burgundy cords and a Brown lambs wool sweater over a button down shirt.. (in my mind) as an act of rebellion to MN inverted snobbery - may just have them all off for a quickie he looks so lush.. 🤣

Pa10ma · 06/01/2019 11:28

I have just re-read the thread and the only post that could be vaguely construed as being “anti poor” would be on the first page and it was along the lines of “I prefer red trousers to tracksuit bottoms or pyjamas.” That’s it. So what? One post - and definitely no more judgemental than the OP.

Op I think you need to lose the colossal chip and re-read your own thread before you accuse people of being “classicist”. They’re not. They just don’t like your tone and find your blatant hypocrisy disingenuous. And that would apply whether you were wearing red trousers or a boiler suit.
