To think buying a £52 eyeshadow pallet for 9 year old is just madness?

I'm talking about the James Charles pallet. £52 for eyeshadow and blusher. My DD9 wants to spend her Christmas money on it but I have said a firm NO! A lot of her friends got it for Christmas (I know this is true as have seen their mothers show it off on Facebook). Each to their own and all that but £52! AIBU?

Yes it’s a lot of money to spend on eyeshadow. She’s only 9 years old and it is a waste of money to spend on something that is probably going to be used only a few times.
I agree, go to Superdrug, Boots etc and buy a cheaper alternative .. she could always put the spare money left over for other girly treats. ( from a mum of 3 girls all grown up now and love their makeup) x

eleigh66 · 06/01/2019 18:22

Why not? It's her money

SoupDragon · 06/01/2019 18:31

Why not? It's her money

So, you'd be happy with your 9 year old buying absolutely anything they wanted with their money?

Marylou2 · 06/01/2019 18:39

I imagine people spend this on plastic tat or video games for their kids all the time. My 11 year old DD asked for an Anastasia palatte and it brought her much happiness on Christmas morning. She loves looking at Natasha Demons too. If she stays top of her maths class she might be in luck. It's all a question of balance.

Denona 😁😁autocorrect

fluffiny31 · 06/01/2019 18:54

My daughter is 3. I let her choose what she wants. To a certain extent. She chose peppa pig toys but also wanted something else that would of cost her all of her money. She wanted it for ages. I told her she could have it but would have to put peppa back she chose peppa as there was more of it. It's her money let her do what she wants. Unless she isn't allowed makeup yet.

threatmatrix · 06/01/2019 19:14

A nine year old? Why is this even being debated. What is the world coming to.

TaMereAPoilDevantPrisu · 06/01/2019 19:19

you can blow all your money on one high quality thing

I wouldn't even be sure this is good quality. The price difference between this and a cheaper set is also about the branding and celebrity endorsement.

Hector2000 · 06/01/2019 19:22

Threat matrix - exactly my thought 🤔

Gth1234 · 06/01/2019 19:23

it might be her money, but she needs guiding away from £50 makeup.

It will be gone off before she's made a dent in it.

Vivianebrezilletbrooks · 06/01/2019 19:25

No no no no no!
Make Up on a 9 year old? Wow. Far too young.
Sod the whole 'Fomo' thing, that is too much. When I think if 9 year olds in make up I think of those awful beauty pagents in the US.
I don't care how supposedly brilliant it is, £52 for a make up palette is too much at any age. Full stop.
When she's 13 you can introduce her to Revolution(I myself use no other brand)which is brilliant quality stuff and far better value for money but still only allow it to be used subtly and only more obviously for parties and special occasions.
I don't know what the world is coming to,she's 9, can't we please let kids be kids?
Not mini adults.
When I was 9 all I cared about was pretty dresses and Tinkerbell make up that was more kiddy than anything.
It may be her money and up to her what she spends it on but still within reason.
Gift cards or presents would have been a better idea than money really at her age.
That amount of money for a 9 year old is too much.
YANBU. That much for an eyeshadow palette is BU at any age.

Sparkerparker · 06/01/2019 19:25

Do 9year old children need ANY makeup?

Bluelady · 06/01/2019 19:26

Eyeshadow doesn't "go off", I'm still using a three year old palette.

celticprincess · 06/01/2019 19:26

Wow I’ve a 9 year old girl and don’t even have a clue what you’re talking about with regard to the brand!! She got make up for her birthday but it was a fairly cheap brand. She’s used it only a couple of times since the summer. She’s not really into anything specific through. She asked for a ninetendo last year (3DS) as her friend has one. I got second hand and glad I did as she’s barely used it. Her little sister now has an old DS we had lying round and plays on it more. The little sister is another kettle of fish though as she can’t understand why I wouldn’t buy the big lol surprise thing for Christmas (£60-80). Apart from the fact it was sold out everywhere she got loads of lol bits n pieces and a brand new desk for her room (her other request). She’s convinced she will buy the big lol when she saves up the money. I’m hoping she loses interest by then.

Back to OP’s post. I can see why a 9 year old would want make up but really wouldn’t be spending that much. But then again my daughter is one of the only ones in her class yet to get a phone that she has no actual need for just yet. If you have the money then great but if you’re on a budget then teach her to brand swap.

MissyMoooo · 06/01/2019 19:28

Absolutely let her buy it. It's money that's been gifted to her and all the other young girls have it including my daughter who bought it last week off her Xmas money. And I must say it IS pretty amazing stuff! I really didn't agree with her spending £38'on an eyeshadow palette but now that I've seen it, I would say it's totally worth it (and I don't even wear make up!)

manicmij · 06/01/2019 19:40

A definite NO from me. What on earth are 9 year old doing plastering their faces with that stuff. Worse still is the parents allowing it.

Littlechocola · 06/01/2019 19:42

Fondly remembering the Avon make up aimed at little ones.

I was allowed a bit of lip gloss and glitter hair spray for school discos. I thought that I was amazing. (I was).

fatimashortbread · 06/01/2019 19:59

9 is far too young for make up even for discos and partiesShock

KatyWhatsit · 06/01/2019 20:00

Christ can we stop this 'gifted' lark and just say 'given'. Angry

What is WRONG with parents these days?

You are supposed to be a parent! Allwoing your child to buy make up at an obscene price is madness. How can they learn the value of anything?

I like make up and have not even heard of the brand. I once bought a Dior eye shadow palette and felt guilty for months even though I could easily afford it.

I'd be encouraging someone aged 9 with £50 quid to save some of it for their first car, or a house deposit, or towards something educational.

I'd not be encouraging them to waste it on make up.

I also think it is completely wrong for a 9 year old to be allowed to wear make up except as dressing up.

If I saw a child that young wearing make up, I'd wonder WTF her parents were thinking of.

It's along the same lines as when some stores were selling padded bras for young girls who didn't even need a bra.

Sexualisation far too young.

SaucyJack · 06/01/2019 20:04

“but now that I've seen it, I would say it's totally worth it (and I don't even wear make up!)”

TBH the fact that you don’t wear make-up makes you a very poor judge of whether this particular eyeshadow is worth 40 quid or not.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 06/01/2019 20:06

Iv only read up to page 2, please DO NOT buy fake makeup from eBay! Especially not a “replica” of an original expensive palette. Cosmetologist and fully qualified MUA here they have toxic ingredients and some even have feaces!

MrsFoxPlus4 · 06/01/2019 20:12

Oh and the Revolution outlet website has a sale on just now I got a few palettes for £2.00 and it’s free postage over £15.

SecretWitch · 06/01/2019 20:16

I would look askance at a 9 yr old wearing eye shadow. The weirdness of a young face and shadowed eyes would be alarming to me. That being said, everyone parent’s differently and if you are fine with make up on very young girls, I guess there wouldn’t be a problem with your dd spending her own money on an expensive brand.

MrsFoxPlus4 · 06/01/2019 20:18

Iv just caught up I’m glad she choose 2 palettes and can see she’s loving the highlight colours already. I hope she’s having fun :)

thornyhousewife · 06/01/2019 20:20

I'm genuinely shocked to read this. I have a 9yo DD and under no circumstances would I be encouraging her to buy make up. If someone gave it to her I'd chuck it in the bin.

Her friends aren't interested in make up either. Where is this coming from?! What makes you unable to say no?
