Bathing in dettol

So I was chatting to my friend about what we were doing after work, (we work in a restaurant), and she said she was going home to have a dettol bath. I though she was kidding as she has a bug, but no. Turns out she has a 45 minute soak in dettol every night, then changes the water and has a 45 minute bath in 'normal' bathwater. Is this a thing??????? AIBU to think that's so bad for your skin and fufu. Dettol's website (of course) say it's fine, but surely your killing germs bad or good.Confused

My mum used to put dettol or savlon in our baths when we were little

Nicknacky · 04/01/2019 16:25

Why does she do that?!

alltoomuchrightnow · 04/01/2019 16:26

jeez! does she have germ phobia? she has enough time for an hour and a half bath too? being soaked for that long in any water cannot be good for the skin, hope she uses a ton of moisturiser. Sounds like OCD to me.

GhettoFabulous · 04/01/2019 16:33

I had a flatmate who bathed in Dettol. Turned out she was having a psychotic episode.

crackerbaron · 04/01/2019 16:34

I've seen that mentioned on here a while back and thought I had misread it. My skin would be in pieces on the back of the bath.

AlmostAJillSandwich · 04/01/2019 16:34

It may well be OCD, i use disinfectant in showers, sometimes bleach on a bad day.

IndigoSpritz · 04/01/2019 16:34

My mum used to put Dettol in our baths every night. We came out of the bathroom reeking like an intensive care ward. Clearly she was unaware of the delights of Matey and Radox.

Jackshouse · 04/01/2019 16:35

Just why would she do that?

TruckLoadOfSubtleGlitter · 04/01/2019 16:35

Fufu?

Choccywoccyhooha · 04/01/2019 16:36

My friend bathes her kids in Dettol on really filthy days.

DickTurpinsHat · 04/01/2019 16:36

It was a thing I read about on one of the Hinch Army fb groups. I'd never heard of this before but lots do it apparently.

Cherries101 · 04/01/2019 16:37

yep dettol in bath water is a common thing. It makes sense as it disinfects the tub prior to you getting in.

missnevermind · 04/01/2019 16:38

I used to put Dettol in my sons bath after a game of rugby for him to soak in.

XmasPostmanBos · 04/01/2019 16:38

I must admit I love the smell of dettol however I think this is a weird instagram/hincharmy craze like stamping your toilet paper ends with the tap.

Nicknacky · 04/01/2019 16:39

Hang on, is she bathing solely in dettol, or having a water bath with dettol added? The later is understandable, the former not so much!

ProfYaffle · 04/01/2019 16:42

Oh, I'd forgotten about Dettol baths! My Mum used to put it in my baths when I was a kid, the smell of Dettol makes me think of Sunday nights Grin

Helplessfeeling · 04/01/2019 16:42

My Mum used to pop a tiny bit of Dettol in our baths as children. I remember it being shown on an advert for Dettol in the 80's. I think people did not bathe as often then so maybe we had more germs built up to get rid of?

Confusedbeetle · 04/01/2019 16:44

I think that is a terrible idea. The skin has a flora of healthy bacteria which should not be interfered with

DappledThings · 04/01/2019 16:44

At university nearly 20 years ago we were having one of those "remember when your parents used to...." conversations. Someone mentioned putting Dettol in the bath. There was a resounding WTF response from everyone else and it killed the conversation.

AdobeWanKenobi · 04/01/2019 16:45

I think this is a weird instagram/hincharmy craze

People have been bathing in Dettol since before the Hinch woman was even a glint.
I remember Mum giving me Dettol baths as a kid in the late 70's.

Heaviestdirtyestsoul · 04/01/2019 16:48

I love a dettol bath, always helps me relax, cant do it more than once a week but I love the smell and I think it's what has kept my spots away

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 04/01/2019 16:51

like stamping your toilet paper ends with the tap.

Say what now?

tablelegs · 04/01/2019 16:51

I used to get these when I was a kid.

Ragaroo · 04/01/2019 16:51

I've only ever seen this on Obsessive Compulsive Cleaners.

TwoGinScentedTears · 04/01/2019 16:51

Me and my sister laugh about the time she dumped into the pond in the house we'd just bought and what seemed like 4 million frogs jumped out. She was promptly put into a big steaming dettol bath!
