Bathing in dettol

So I was chatting to my friend about what we were doing after work, (we work in a restaurant), and she said she was going home to have a dettol bath. I though she was kidding as she has a bug, but no. Turns out she has a 45 minute soak in dettol every night, then changes the water and has a 45 minute bath in 'normal' bathwater. Is this a thing??????? AIBU to think that's so bad for your skin and fufu. Dettol's website (of course) say it's fine, but surely your killing germs bad or good.Confused

whatsthepointthen · 04/01/2019 16:54

Yep its a
thing, only
a capfull or two in the bath. I dont do it though.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 04/01/2019 16:54

Yes, child of the seventies, regular Dettol/Savlon baths back. No idea why though......

DitaVonPeas · 04/01/2019 16:54

I used to do it as a teen. I had terrible cystic acne all over my back and chest and this really helped.

WhoTookTheChristmasCookie · 04/01/2019 16:54

Oh god I'd forgotten Dettol baths.

I remember my mum running me one whenever I'd cut/grazed myself.
I can still remember the smell and sting!!

DD doesn't know she's born with her Johnson's and Matey bubbles!

floribunda18 · 04/01/2019 16:54

Yeah, my mum used to put Dettol in my bath when I was little.

As I only had a bath and washed my hair once a week I imagine it was more than required.

SidecarSchism · 04/01/2019 16:54

Would this not give you a yeast infection? Killing off the good bacteria and all that stuff? (I can’t ecen use bath bombs!)

mindutopia · 04/01/2019 16:55

I have OCD (I mean like actual OCD) and the thought of this even freaks me out.

CantWaitToRetire · 04/01/2019 16:55

Wow, that brought back a memory! When I was a child visiting my DGM, I'd been 'gardening' with her and got bitten to pieces by red ants. She gave me a dettol bath because she thought it would help. Bless!

Waddsup12 · 04/01/2019 16:56

Yeah, I used to do this when bathing in the baths in halls of residence. Love the smell!

XmasPostmanBos · 04/01/2019 16:56

The toilet paper stamping is where you fold over the end of the toilet paper roll into a point and then press it on the damp end of the tap which makes a stamp. I am not sure if you are supposed to redo this every time you use the toilet.

BatFaced · 04/01/2019 16:57

Bear in mind there are two different types of dettol and one type can be used to add to a bath

Wouldn't float my boat but it's not harmful

floribunda18 · 04/01/2019 16:57

People used to wash themselves with carbolic soap, which is an antiseptic, so it's not much different really.

MrsApplepants · 04/01/2019 16:57

My dad used to do this! But only when he was ill/ had a cold.

Oddsocksandmeatballs · 04/01/2019 16:57

My mum used to do this to us kids, we also always had a flannel rinsed out in Dettol to wash our hands on if we went out for the day but the absolute highlight was the salad we used to have to eat that was soaked in Milton before we were allowed to eat it.

SlowlyShrinking · 04/01/2019 16:58

I’m sure I’ve heard that some women douche with dettol 😱

SB1013 · 04/01/2019 16:58

@TwoGinScentedTears thats really made me laugh

MrsSchadenfreude · 04/01/2019 17:00

I’m more intrigued by the toilet paper stamping.

You couldn’t do that in my day with the Izal Medicated. Ho no.

Carrotss · 04/01/2019 17:00

PURE Dettol? Or diluted?

MrsJayy · 04/01/2019 17:01

I used to get a Sunday dettol bath i think we all did because the classroom stunk of dettolHmm

colditz · 04/01/2019 17:01

God her poor fanny

kmc1111 · 04/01/2019 17:01

I do this. Just a capful or two. I don’t change the water out but I do jump in the shower for a minute after the bath.

I like the smell and on days when I’ve been sweating a lot it just makes me feel a bit fresher than a plain bath. I doubt it actually does much of anything diluted that much, but whatever.

It’s not harsh on my skin at all and I’ve never had a yeast infection.

Elfinablender · 04/01/2019 17:03

I've never heard of a Dettol bath. I'm glad I read about it here, if it just popped up in conversation I'd have thought it was some kind of deranged punishment for kids, like washing their mouth out with soap.

DippyDuck123 · 04/01/2019 17:03

First of all who gets an hour and a half to bathe every night? Must be us part-time parents.....Wink
