Bathing in dettol

So I was chatting to my friend about what we were doing after work, (we work in a restaurant), and she said she was going home to have a dettol bath. I though she was kidding as she has a bug, but no. Turns out she has a 45 minute soak in dettol every night, then changes the water and has a 45 minute bath in 'normal' bathwater. Is this a thing??????? AIBU to think that's so bad for your skin and fufu. Dettol's website (of course) say it's fine, but surely your killing germs bad or good.Confused

My mum always used to put dettol in my bath when I was young - one capful I think. I've always got some in the cupboard and used it when sons played rugby etc or cut themselves - never thought anything of it really as I used it all the time

Yep we had one bath a week on a Sunday and yes had a capful of dettol in the bath. No one at school was dirty or smelly and we all only bathed once a week (strip wash everyday though) that's how it was. The emersion heater was put on Sunday am and you hoped to be the first to bath because there wasn't much hot water left if you were the 5th family member. We played out all day and think much healthier in general despite getting dirty on a daily basis. I love the smell of detail and use it when mopping my floorsSmile

Smell of dettol Blush

My long-gone gran used to have a Dettol bath on a Saturday afternoon.
It was the norm to have a bath only once a week.
The smell of Dettol makes me instantly think of her.
Lovely.

We didn't have Dettol baths but we always had a bottle in the cupboard for scraped knees etc

I love the smell of Dettol though and I've recently taken to using an old spray bottle with diluted Dettol in it to disinfect my kitchen worktops

I try to have a dettol bath once a week. I put 5-6 capfuls in the bath water and have a soak for about 10 minutes. I wash my body and hair in the water and I have scalp/facial psoriasis and I have had absolutely no problems of any kind; no dry skin, no itchy skin, no problems down below etc, etc. I do it because it makes me feel extra clean.

I have two skin conditions that cause open wounds and boils/abscesses.
Bleach/dettol baths are recommended. You highly dilute them so it’s no stronger than being in a chlorinated swimming pool.
I’ve used Hibiscrub neat on a sponge over my lady parts and now use either dettol soap or simple anti bacterial soap all over.
None of these things cause thrush/cystitis or dry skin.......on me anyway.
I also bath in Epsom salts when I have dermatitis and psoriasis
Another thing that helps with my conditions is Vicks.
And yes you can put Vicks on and in lady bits, it doesn’t sting/nip or hurt. Tingly and cooling Is the only sensation you get.
Having a 8cm wide abscess that hurts like a bitch is incentive to try anything.

No dettol in the supermarket today, do they sell it in supermarkets? Tried two different ones (both fairly big retailers) but no joy. Is there somewhere better?

Haven't had one in years but now craving one.
It's like the "pasta and chicken kievs" thread all over again, got me craving something my brain would never have conjured up without MN

There's probably been a run on Dettol @Bumblebee39
MNetters stocking up on it!

purplepansyem · 09/01/2019 21:42

They sell it in Pondland :)

purplepansyem · 09/01/2019 21:42

Sorry, Poundland!

@Cantstopeatingchocolate - HS? Sad me too

I was told to do this by a dermatologist for my psoriasis. It did fuck all except sting and make my skin even redder.

disappointedyetagain · 10/01/2019 22:01

It helped get rid of back acne in my teens.

I also got told by my old GP to put bicarb in the bath, sit in it and pee in it if I had the urge. He said it would help with cystitis and it did. There was always a tub of bicarb with either a few drops of lavender or peppermint and eucalyptus oils in it (that was just for my mood or if I had a cold).

I'd always rinse with the shower attachment after, but old GP said there was no need.
