To rehome my cat?

I'm not saying I definitely will and I'm not sure I want to but I'm so fed up of him ruining every nice thing I have and of him being an evil little shit.

Sofas, washing baskets, divan beds, carpets.

He has multiple scratching posts. I've tried the plug in from the vet to keep him calm, no change. Tried sprays to get him to scratch only his things and sprays to keep him away from mine.

I just be minding my own business and he goes into attack mode.

I've now got a young baby and he can't be around her.

At my wits end. So AIBU to be thinking of rehoming him.

For additional info he's 6. Had him since 8 weeks and he was neutered at 4 months as advised. All up to date with jabs and flea/worming.

Unless this is half hearted then yes, you are a terrible human being. Why can’t he be around the baby? Hmm

LEMtheoriginal · 03/01/2019 17:28

YABU i can't even be bothered

Childrenofthesun · 03/01/2019 17:29

Does he have outside access?

JustABetterPlayer · 03/01/2019 17:30

Please for the love of god don’t say “he could lie on her asleep and suffocate her”.

FacingUp · 03/01/2019 17:31

This won’t go down well here.

SushiMonster · 03/01/2019 17:31

Have you tried the flat cardboard scratchers? He might like those more.

To be fair, some animals are not suitable to a family environment. Just like some humans aren't right in the head.

Outwards · 03/01/2019 17:31

A new addition to the family can really unerve a pet.

You poor cat sounds frightened and unsettled, not a 'little shit'.

Rehome him and never have another pet. Let's hope your child doesn't start to piss you off.

MoreCheeseDear · 03/01/2019 17:31

Rehome it. Neither of you is happy.

Soubriquet · 03/01/2019 17:32

I’m guessing he isn’t suitable around the baby because of his attack modes?

tinofbeans · 03/01/2019 17:33

Personally, I would rehome as babies come first for me and it sounds like you've tried hard to improve the cat's behaviour. I will add the caveat that I am not a cat lover and wouldn't have got one in the first place

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 03/01/2019 17:33

Sounds pretty stressful OP, why don't you want around the baby?

MrsApplepants · 03/01/2019 17:34

It’s a cat. They scratch stuff. It’s what they do. You knew this right?

Confusedbeetle · 03/01/2019 17:35

Do you keep him indoors too much?

gamerchick · 03/01/2019 17:35

He sounds bored and frustrated. Is he an outdoor cat?

MikeUniformMike · 03/01/2019 17:35

Have you considered rehoming the baby?

Maelstrop · 03/01/2019 17:38

Has he always done this? Would he be better as a barn cat?

KittensAndCake · 03/01/2019 17:39

You've had him 6 years, has he always been 'an evil little shit' or is he unnerved because of the baby? Do you have a cat flap?

DavetheCat2001 · 03/01/2019 17:41
Hmm
Wonkypalmtree · 03/01/2019 17:42

It says in the OP that the cat goes into “attack mode” unprovoked, I wouldn’t leave it with the baby either (and I am sat with my cat on my knee typing this).

Soubriquet · 03/01/2019 17:42

I used to have this problem with my cat. She would go completely go psycho and viciously attacked.

Nothing worked. Even adding things to her food to calm her down didn’t do anything

However we got her spayed and within 2 weeks she changed completely.

She’s nearly 3 now and whilst she will never be a lovey dovey cat, she is ok to be around.

She’s outside 99% of the time and only really comes in for food. Though lately she’s been coming in at night and sleeping in bed with me as it’s been so cold

It does sound like you’ve tried with yours but if he is genuinely dangerous around the baby, sometimes there’s no choice

Drogosnextwife · 03/01/2019 17:43

just be minding my own business and he goes into attack mode.

Perhaps this is why OP can't have the baby around the cat, because it's fucking attacking her.

Aquamarine1029 · 03/01/2019 17:44

Why aren't you trimming his claws? I have 5 cats and there is nothing scratched up or ruined in my home.

JustAmie35 · 03/01/2019 17:44

Cat life .. Hmm

GalacticChickenShit · 03/01/2019 17:45

You sound like you've tried a lot. We had a cat like this. After three years I rehomed her via the Cats Protection. We were unhappy, she was unhappy. She got a new home on a farm where she could be as feral as she liked and was very happy thereafter.
Vet thinks it was related to being separated from her mum too early, we got her as a kitten and she was surprisingly dropped over to us at around 4 weeks old. I was young and didn't know much different at the time.

TuttiFrutti · 03/01/2019 17:45

The cat is probably bored and suffering from a lack of attention. Have you ever tried giving him a toy and playing with him, even for just 5 minutes a day?

Have you seen the programme My Cat From Hell on Quest Red? (Really upmarket TV I know.) It's amazing how the animal behaviourist on there can change a cat's behaviour.
