To rehome my cat?

I'm not saying I definitely will and I'm not sure I want to but I'm so fed up of him ruining every nice thing I have and of him being an evil little shit.

Sofas, washing baskets, divan beds, carpets.

He has multiple scratching posts. I've tried the plug in from the vet to keep him calm, no change. Tried sprays to get him to scratch only his things and sprays to keep him away from mine.

I just be minding my own business and he goes into attack mode.

I've now got a young baby and he can't be around her.

At my wits end. So AIBU to be thinking of rehoming him.

For additional info he's 6. Had him since 8 weeks and he was neutered at 4 months as advised. All up to date with jabs and flea/worming.

And someone actually said “you don’t revoke your children...”

I’m off to bed

Platypusfattypus · 03/01/2019 23:21

Rehome not revoke....though there’s an idea

Drogosnextwife · 03/01/2019 23:54

KittensAndCake

Are you sure? A child near me was attacked by a dog in their home a few years ago. Social services got involved. It's unlikely but we are talking about a baby, that has been scratched already, over a bloody cat! Get a grip.

Brandnewshit · 04/01/2019 00:00

I am a fully fledged cat lover.
But I am a mum too.
I had 2 cats,they tolerated each other.
I adopted another and all hell broke loose.
One of my cats could be described as having special needs, learning difficulties or what ever the correct term is. She is not normal.
She is hard work, no matter how much time toys, catnip, caring I give her until I rehomed one of the 3 my home was subjected to her ripping up my furniture her pissing and shitting in my home, on my kids bed, my bed, clothing, electricals,
I had to rehome one of them.
It wasn't easy but it had to happen.

I put my home and my kids belongings above a cat that would attack and destroy and piss on their school uniform and shit and rip up the carpets.
I rehomed one of the cats that could be adopted easier.
The cat that is the troubled one has stayed with me, but as much as a cat is a forever pet and Ive taken her on till death do us part, my children and my home come first.

Brandnewshit · 04/01/2019 00:07

If social services came knocking cos My kid's turned up at school scratched or smelling of cat piss matter how much I tried to bicarb and vinegar the house I can hand on heart say that I've put my kids and my kids home they live in above a pet.
And I don't feel bad about it. All of us (including 3of 3 of the cats) are happier.

Drogosnextwife · 04/01/2019 00:32

He rarely comes around baby as he will just go off into another room. She's wary of him anyway due to previous biting and scratching her so she never gets too close.

Actually kittens, here is where the OP states the cat has bitten and scratched her child before so do fuck off.

MissyCooper · 04/01/2019 00:46

😂😂😂

The loonies are out in force tonight.

WiddlinDiddlin · 04/01/2019 01:18

Id be speaking to a vet and ruling out him being in pain/experiencing sudden pain.

Animals are not aggressive or violent for no reason - your job is to find out that reason.

It may be something that can be fixed, it may not be, but passing the problem on without investigating first is unfair.

hmmwhatatodo · 04/01/2019 01:36

Op has no need to feel ashamed of herself. Are some of you for real?

Brandnewshit · 04/01/2019 02:00

It's ridiculous.
Yes a pet is v Important, a family member in many cases
At least a dog can be trained, as much as I love cats, sometimes they are just little furry cute dickheads.
You can have them neutered, feliway the shit out of your house, clean their litter tray every time they have a piss, have indoor or outdoor play areas, catflaps and all the trimmings, but sometimes they are just idiots.
As much as I love my cats and clean up the daily piss and hair balls on my belongings which lets be honest are piles of puke
My kids and my home are more Important.
So i rehomed 1 of my 3.
As a cat owner I still lint roll every item of clothing I and my family own, I get down on my hands and knees and bicarb and vinegar the special places my eldest cat that isn't ever going to stop pissing in.
But something had to give. Because no matter how much I Ioved all 3 of them, it was affecting my kids life and home
Do not feel guilty OP.
If you have tried, and you know you have them you have done your best x

RedDeadRoach · 04/01/2019 06:44

Oh my god what a bunch of OTT replies you've had. I would say more but I don't want to get deleted but i wouldn't bother listening to anyone who compares a cat to a human child. It's only a cat at the end of the day, none of the three of you are happy so rehoming a stressed out cat to a quiet home is hardly the worst thing that can happen to it. I wouldn't have a vicious animal around my children.

Socksey · 04/01/2019 07:31

It is a difficult situation but you need to think about your child's wellbeing as well as the cats'
And for all those likening the car to a person..... if you had a violet adult partner or adult offspring in your house the advice here would have been unanimously to show them the door....

Socksey · 04/01/2019 07:31

Cat not car

MakeAHouseAHome · 04/01/2019 07:43

There are genuinely some evil pepople on this thread with the attitude of it's 'only' a cat.

Ye it's 'only' a baby aswell.

😂😂 I was going to say something ride bit it will be deleted! Do get a grip.

Costacoffeeplease · 04/01/2019 09:20

Yeah, only a cat Hmm

No wonder the rescues are overflowing

tigwig76 · 04/01/2019 09:25

Haven't read all replies but he might have an hyperthyroidism. That can change cat's behaviour alot and can be controlled by medication. My cat has it and went nuts. Not in an aggressive way but started charging about the house and doing stupid things. He then started to lose weight and his fur wasn't as smooth.

ichifanny · 04/01/2019 09:35

So should she get rid of her baby for a ball of fur that’s attacking and defaecating pissing over her house , oh do get a grip make me a home and take a stroll outside away from your cats .

RedDeadRoach · 04/01/2019 09:49

For what it's worth I like cats. I like dogs. But there's worse things than rehoming an animal that's not happy, and that is making your life miserable and you've tried everything you could reasonably be expected to try. Its not like this is a recent problem and she just can't be bothered.
She's not talking about putting it out on the streets.

Some animals are just not compatible with some families. So is it better to keep that animal in that family, even though it's stressed and unhappy, just because it's "evil " to rehome an animal? Or is it better to accept you can't offer the animal the home it needs for whatever reason, and find one that can? I know which one I think is the better owner and it's not the one who clings on to the unhappy cat at all costs, no matter how stressed the animal gets as a result.

DeadButDelicious · 04/01/2019 09:59

I don't know if anyone has already suggested it but we found the pet remedy plug in much more effective than feliway. It's much cheaper as well.

It sounds like the cat is bored/frustrated and wants to play. We have a toy called Da Bird which my cats love. Does he have somewhere high up to escape everything?

Completely off topic:

Add in possibly the smell of bleach/Milton (which sends pretty much every male cat in the world absolutely fucking loopy)

Well that explains a lot! It was the Milton. Strange things these cats!

Blackandwhitecat1 · 04/01/2019 10:21

I think you're getting a bit of unfair flak here OP, it's understandable that you want to protect your baby. Some cats are a bit bananas. Ours has learnt to pull people's pyjama trousers down if he isn't fed whenever he fancies. It's his favourite trick. He also has form for attacking out of the blue and can be quite vicious, although thankfully he loves children for some reason and wants to lick them. I would NEVER leave him with a child without close supervision though, because he's an animal.

Perhaps you could wait and see how your child's relationship with your cat develops, of course very vigilantly. We were completely shocked to find that our chap is so keen on children, he's certainly never showed any signs of tenderness towards anyone before!

hmmwhatatodo · 04/01/2019 11:00

Why is it always the answer that a cat is doing x or y because its bored or frustrated? I dont buy that. And how many times has the word ‘evil’ appeared in this thread? Worrying!

SushiMonster · 04/01/2019 11:05

IMO putting an unhappy cat down is kinder than ‘rehoming’ to a rescue centre though. That is stressful for th cat.

Sl many of them “THE CAT IS A BABY” posters are very happy for farm animals to be kept in less than ideal conditions, be transported in a stressful way and slaughtered to be eaten. But hypocritical.

holasoydora · 04/01/2019 11:59

Rubbish. I have had two Cats Protection league cats and their (home-based) foster carers couldn’t have been more attentive or kind to them while they were awaiting a new home. Including my ‘feral’ cat who after three weeks at the CP League started accepting strokes and now runs up to me miaowing for his food twice a day. I am sure somewhere like the Blue Cross or a local independent animal rescue charity would be exactly as kind to their animals.
