To try and persuade DD to not get a tattoo?

DD plays a video game (a lot) and is almost 19. She wants her first tattoo and has had a design done which is literally a character from the game. As she's so young, it might seem cool now, but I really think it's the type you're going to regret, she won't play this game forever. She plans on using the birthday money from us (she is a uni student so doesn't have another way to fund it really) so I'm slightly reluctant to now give money on her birthday. AIBU to have these feelings and persuade her or?

And they're frightfully common !

Don't forget to tell the Crown Prince of Denmark that, particularly as one of his is very obvious when he's wearing shorts. There's also been a long-standing rumour that at least one of the UK princes got a tattoo in Fife during their early 20s.

OP, if she's determined, encourage her to research artists, talk to them, check out their work, etc. I'm lucky that my first and several subsequent tattoos were done by an acclaimed artist, and I still love them. Oh, I'm a professional at a managerial level with nine tattoos and several piercings, including my nose. BTW, I wanted tattoos from a very early age, despite my parents' views and seafaring background.

Royal tattoo, so common! 😂

Remind her of something she's loved just as much, would she like a tattoo of that now years later (she may say yes...)

Mumminmum · 03/01/2019 18:01

@DanielRicciardosSmile and @WhoTookTheChristmasCookie

No of course I haven't told my niece that I am embarrassed about her tattoo. It is there now. In a very visible place. Very badly done.

And yes. My friend who is a former nurse at a mental health ward has complained about this many times. He says that up until the mid eighties the person with the tattoo(s) was always one of "theirs". Either a present or a former patient.

PhilomenaButterfly · 03/01/2019 18:02

Ask her if she thinks she'll still like her tattoo in 20 years time.

Were the imaginary patients absconding a lot? Maybe your friend wasn’t a very good imaginary nurse Wink

LadyRochfordsHoickedGusset · 03/01/2019 18:05

They still look shit TooMany.

echt · 03/01/2019 19:41

I quite like @echt’s idea of paying not to have one until 21. How much did you pay out of interest? I think it may take a lot of money

$500.

MNMH · 03/01/2019 20:29

LMAO at people still clutching their pearls at tattoos. You don't have to like them or get them, but to suggest that people who do are unemployable, trying to be trendy, classless, or any less of a person - because ROYALTY doesn't have any (really?) - says more about YOU than the people you're criticizing.

ivykaty44 · 03/01/2019 21:05

Royalty were covered in tattoos in the past, I thought that was a well know fact www.bustle.com/p/do-royals-have-tattoos-it-turns-out-ink-isnt-as-taboo-as-we-think-it-is-12001220

BumDisease · 04/01/2019 01:07

"Ask her if she thinks she'll still like her tattoo in 20 years time."

I hate this argument. She could be hit by a bus tomorrow! Why worry about what you MIGHT think in 20 years?

PhilomenaButterfly · 04/01/2019 01:47

Well, that's how I've always chosen my tattoos. You can hate the argument if you want.

dustarr73 · 04/01/2019 15:39

One of my nieces have a couple of tattoos. They look like something that an 11 year old girl would draw. She might not be embarrassed by them, but I am, as they are so obviously only done to get a tattoo because it was trending at the time.

Wow dont you sound like a peach.

ThanosSavedMe · 04/01/2019 15:42

Sure fire way to stop her fettingbi e is to get one yourself! Not helpful. Sorry

70sbaubles · 04/01/2019 15:43

YANBU tattoos are awful and mark her for life.

Thisisnotadriveby · 04/01/2019 15:46

If it makes you feel any better, I got a massive tattoo of my favourite video game character on my thigh when I was 18. Now early thirties... I still love it!

Just makes sure she goes to a decent place, most people who regret their tattoo, actually still like the design, they just don’t think it was well done.

dustarr73 · 04/01/2019 15:48

You dont say.

Look ive loads of tattoos, some of them i wouldnt choose now.But its her mistake to make.

PersonaNonGarter · 04/01/2019 15:56

Bribe her, definitely.

I would pay my DC £100 a year to stay tattoo free up to 25. After that they probably understand about passing fads and any tattoo is going to be better researched and a more permanent theme.

My flat mate got a butterfly on her wrist at 21. By 27 she hated it. I thought it was fine but it really upset her. She’s now had it removed.

ItsQuietTime · 04/01/2019 16:05

@AdobeWanKenobi

"I asked DD that she have the design as her phone wallpaper for 12 months. If she was still happy looking at it every day then go for it. She did just that and to be fair it was a lovely design."

That's really good advice.

JacquesHammer · 04/01/2019 16:08

mark her for life

Thank goodness you were here to explain that. Nobody who has a tattoo is aware of that Grin

TurquoiseSeal · 04/01/2019 16:58

She is booked in for it in March, found the person on Instagram and is going 3 hours away??? Isn't that odd?

Really don't like any of it to be honest but I don't think I'd pay her to not have it done.

OP posts:
PersonaNonGarter · 04/01/2019 17:00

Paying her to not have it done would be cheaper than paying to have it removed. Would you chip in for that if she hates it?

Carrotss · 04/01/2019 17:01

found the person on Instagram and is going 3 hours away??? Isn't that odd?

Not odd no, I know people who have travelled to a whole different country to get tattooed by someone whose work they like. It's better than going to somebody crap just because they're nearby.

JacquesHammer · 04/01/2019 17:05

She is booked in for it in March, found the person on Instagram and is going 3 hours away??? Isn't that odd?

Not odd at all. She’s obviously found an artist who’s work she likes and is willing to travel to get that. Positive!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 04/01/2019 17:13
