I know it's yet another brexit thread but it genuinely just hit me that it's actually happening THIS YEAR! I am truly gutted. Would love someone with political knowledge to come on and reassure me that it actually won't be that bad. I have 3 children who have to live with the repercussions.

buble is on jules holland-this has to be a good sign

Get a visa? You're British - you don't have some 'right' to the whole of Europe.

Aneira11 · 01/01/2019 04:51

Agree OP. It’s so sad and 3 months to go is a really scary proposition!! Agog at some of the sound bites I heard over Christmas period. Standout quotes that are particularly infuriating:

“Well I just voted the same as your dad” (his dimwit OH)
“There are just too many foreign lorries clogging up the roads” (acquaintance)

I need to join CostCo and start bulk buying. I’d been hoping for another vote.

SheilaBruce · 01/01/2019 06:30

getting a work visa in many non EU countries has many obstacles

Errr, there's a reason for that... they don't want every Tom Dick and Harry to come and live the good life without being active contributors to the economy/society. Freedom of movement was one of the cornerstones of the whole Brexit movement.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 01/01/2019 07:37

I was mulling over 17yo Dd doing a gap year after A-levels... how to do it on the cheap. Working her way across EU is out, now. Bummer.

Travelling through Europe isn't cheap.

Eyewhisker · 01/01/2019 08:11

I agree OP. Brexit is shit and is going to make this country a meaner and shitter place. Forget the spirit of the London Olympics and hello ‘we don’t like your sort around here’

The Brexiters on this thread demonstrate this perfectly. They don’t like to hear other languages, they don’t like foreigners, they won the war by themselves you know and they certainly don’t like people like me and my family. I married an EU citizen and I guess they would rather my family wasn’t here. Unfortunately they’ve got what they wanted and still won’t be happy because you can’t eat a flag.

F Off Brexit and all those who voted for it!

ShitOnItt · 01/01/2019 08:33

I do wonder what would happen if they recounted the votes, discarding those from people that are now deceased. In my family alone two leavers have died since the vote.

Whyyounoeatmypie · 01/01/2019 08:35

I am the British spouse of a non EU citizen. We're on the second round of spousal visa applications: you get one for 2.5 years, then have to renew for another 2.5 and then you can apply for leave to remain. Each application has fees of around £1000 and that's without using a lawyer which we were fortunately able to do - the form is complex and can be rejected on mi or technicalities thus making you reapply with all the contingent fees again. Even if my spouse earnt 6 figures it wouldn't matter - I am his 'sponsor' so have to earn over the £18 600 threshold. That's more than minimum wage. Hence the exclusion of a huge number of couples who simply can't afford to live here even though they are married and well able to pay taxes and contribute to society, and those like us spending our lives in limbo (if our next visa is refused, we'll have to either move to Korea or split our family between here and there. Neither of us has job prospects there and the thought of our son in Korean school makes me shudder).

This is what EU couples will now face. That's in rwturn for a lifetime (for me) of free movement, study and work and cultural exchange across several countries. I'm ashamed and I'm sorry.

PatchworkElmer · 01/01/2019 08:36

I’m upset about the impact on all of our futures, but also what Leave says about us as a country. Dress it up how you like, it’s very clear that the vote was won on immigration. Such hateful views don’t represent how I feel, and I’m ashamed that this is the way the rest of the world will now perceive us.

Whatever happens, I think we’re in for dark times. Aside from the large organisations that are moving operations from the UK, we have the issue of a potential Scottish referendum. And whether we leave or not, one ‘side’ is going to feel hugely resentful.

This is why we should never have had a referendum on a complex economic issue- people still don’t understand the implications of their vote.

WitchesWeb · 01/01/2019 08:37

Hmm what a daft suggestion. Not sure what your point is. I know some very pro campaigning remainers that have died.

If it is a dig at the older generation then be honest about your ageism.

PatchworkElmer · 01/01/2019 08:38

Whyyounoeatmypie that’s appalling, I’m so deeply sorry.

ShitOnItt · 01/01/2019 08:41

@WitchesWeb

In my family it was the older generation, same in lots of my friends families/circles. Not for racist reasons I might add, but it was.

MakeAHouseAHome · 01/01/2019 08:50

I cannot wait!

dementedma · 01/01/2019 08:52

so many people here in Scotland saying we will get another independence referendum (great, another round of "go back to where you came from,ya english cunt") and then Scotland will "get back into Europe". Ignoring the fact that Scotland isn't in Europe, the UK is, and therefore can't go back, the assumption that the EU will welcome a newly independent and unstable Scotland with open arms is laughable.
Going to be fun up here in 2019. Not.

ABCagain · 01/01/2019 08:54

Here’s Two, Hooray 😃.

Yousignup · 01/01/2019 09:10

I am British and also have the nationality of another EU country, that of my parents. I now live there permanently. We are the laughing stock of Europe. We have proved ourselves to be racist and mean and small minded and I am ashamed.

Eyewhisker · 01/01/2019 09:11

Look if you want to gloat go and start your own thread. Brexit is messing up our lives and sending a massive two fingers to all those EU citizens who moved to the UK.

If you want to celebrate as your factories relocate (to still be in the single market) and your country’s reputation for stability and pragmatism is replaced by a chaotic anti-foreigner delusion of grandeur, then please do it on another thread.

ButterflyBelle · 01/01/2019 09:27

Well it didn't take long for Brexit moaners to start did it. 20 mins after midnight Nothing like sucking the joy out of New Year.

Hoppinggreen · 01/01/2019 09:30

At least DH and the DC will still be EU citizens ( dual nationality) so that makes me a bit happier knowing the dc will have the opportunity to study and work in The EU with no need for permits or visas
Also, we are able to leave The UK if necessary. I don’t want to but we could
Very depressing

sashh · 01/01/2019 09:36

I’m not an EU citizen. Has zero impact on my life. Chill out.

What about equality legislation? Do you want people to be paid less because of their sex or skin colour?

If you need medical treatment not available in the UK you currently can have it NHS funded in the EU.

A right to life?

Developments from Cern?

I hope you never need a pacemaker, there are non manufactured in the UK.

Or insulin.

Have you ever visited the NEC? Used Liverpool Airport?

I've just started an OU course, if the UK was to remain I could have taken the equivalent course from a Swedish university, but without paying a penny.

I'd be surprised if there was't anything where you live funded by the EU.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 01/01/2019 09:38

Well it didn't take long for Brexit moaners to start did it. 20 mins after midnight Nothing like sucking the joy out of New Year

Gutted! I came on here to say the same thing! I just keep picturing posters all forlorn with their party poppers.

Almahart · 01/01/2019 09:43

A recent thing for me is that I am feeling really angry with people who voted for Brexit and I am very polite in RL. This is a really new thing for me svd I dint like it at all

ragged · 01/01/2019 09:45

I don't celebrate NYE. Don't give a damn about it, tbh.

MakeAHouseAHome · 01/01/2019 09:50

Almahart, why are you angry with the majority of voters? Who exercised their right to vote just as much as you did, they just didn't happen to vote the same way. And they won... :-)

I am gping to throw a party when we finally get out the shit show that is the EU.

ButterflyBelle · 01/01/2019 09:52

Well I do. My mistake was to click on this thread. My New Year Resoulution is to ask Mumsnet to keep the moaning pity people in their own separate subsection.

Some of us actually want to enjoy our lives.

Happy New Year to all those who enjoy a sense of positivity in our lives Flowers
