I know it's yet another brexit thread but it genuinely just hit me that it's actually happening THIS YEAR! I am truly gutted. Would love someone with political knowledge to come on and reassure me that it actually won't be that bad. I have 3 children who have to live with the repercussions.

buble is on jules holland-this has to be a good sign

But less air miles will absolutely be a good thing

I could definitely get on board with that, but isn't the whole point of Brexit trading with countries half a world away, rather than the ones on our doorstep?

Pa10ma · 01/01/2019 21:05

“We don't need to justify our choices. We voted, we won. End of story.”

Well that’s handy isn’t it, seeing as you obviously CAN’T think of any justification.

What is all this “We won” rhetoric anyway - it’s not a bloody football match fgs.

The places who had the strongest Brexit votes eg. Sunderland or Wales are going to be the biggest LOSERS. Surely you realise this?

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 21:05

The Manchester bombing has fuck all to do with the EU.

Nothing. Nada. Nowt.

I can read up thread but the Manchester bombing still has absolutely nothing to do with the EU.

recently · 01/01/2019 21:05

YOU don't know what the EU is going to look like in in the future either. It's a weak argument.
No, it's not. You still don't seem to understand that as members of the EU we shape that future. It is not imposed upon us.

MissionItsPossible · 01/01/2019 21:06

I think Supernanny needs to be called in on this thread now. Confused Someone's sounding increasingly unhinged. I'm out.

User758172 · 01/01/2019 21:07

The places who had the strongest Brexit votes eg. Sunderland or Wales are going to be the biggest LOSERS. Surely you realise this?

Can you think why this might be though? Why would people do such a crazy thing?

MissionItsPossible · 01/01/2019 21:07

we shape that future. It is not imposed upon us.

We? Us? How did you shape the future of the EU? What say did any of us have in it?

MedSchoolRat · 01/01/2019 21:08

Original pdf/article commissioned by Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis (it's by 2 academics who state the opinions are their own not those of the FRBM). They describe just three scenarios after Leave about future investment environment in UK; in only last scenario does net wealth (welfare) increase for UK. Bold is my emphasis not theirs; from the article:

6. Conclusions ...

(1)If the United Kingdom unilaterally tightens regulations, UK firms must invest on their own, and UK citizens will be significantly worse off.

(2) If the European Union also tightens regulations on trade and FDI from the United Kingdom, then the relative sizes and TFPs of the two economies, along with those of other investing nations, will determine global investment and production patterns in the post-Brexit period. Given that the United Kingdom is relatively small, if the UK and EU firms face the same stricter regulations, we predict that the optimal response of UK firms is to lower investments in R&D and other intangibles and to disinvest in their EU subsidiaries. We predict that the optimal response of UK citizens will be to increase international lending by financing the production of non-UK multinationals, both domestically and abroad. In this scenario, we estimate significant welfare losses for both the United Kingdom and other EU nations.

(3) However, we estimate significant welfare gains for UK citizens if their government were to simultaneously reduce current restrictions on major investors outside of the European Union.

More of London bought up by Russians & Middle Easterners, then?

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 21:08

Jo Cox was murdered during the referendum campaign by someone who had made anti EU statements. Jo Cox was targeted as she supported the EU.

There is a clear link.

The Manchester bombing has nothing to do with the EU. There is no link. Why was it brought up?

recently · 01/01/2019 21:08

These threads are so depressing. Leavers never come up with anything that is both positive and likely to happen as a consequence of Brexit.

User758172 · 01/01/2019 21:09

@Moussemoose

The Manchester bombing has fuck all to do with the EU.

Someone else brought up Jo Cox. That’s what I was replying to. I never said it had anything to do with the EU.

Thanks for policing, though! Smile

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 21:10

@MissionItsPossible how do we shape the EU?

The EU is a democratic organisation. We vote for MEPs. We have a significant influence on the Council of Ministers.

We get to vote.

Dongdingdong · 01/01/2019 21:11

Oh yes, and it’s thanks to the EU that we currently have to pay a 5% tax on tampons - although I believe they have recently held a landmark vote on this which means it may be allowed to be scrapped. Finally!

recently · 01/01/2019 21:11

What say did any of us have in it?
We vote for MEPs. The EU is no less a democratic institution than our own parliament. Actually my MEPs are far more helpful and transparent than my MP.

TheVoiceOfRaisin · 01/01/2019 21:12

I personally hope that we eventually move away from the EU Driver's Hours regulations too, which are a pain in the arse as a professional driver - requiring me to spend a night out if I run out of driving hours literally 5 mins from the depot.

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 21:13

Yes someone brought up Jo Cox as an example of the type of idiot that Brexit has encouraged. There is a link.

Why would you then chose to bring up a totally unrelated incident. An incident that has nothing to do with the EU.

The Manchester bombing has nothing to do with Jo Cox or the EU. I ask again why did you bring it up?

Pa10ma · 01/01/2019 21:13

MrsAraidne - no, funnily enough, I can’t think of why people in Sunderland or Wales (or anywhere) would cut off their nose to spite their face. Perhaps you could enlighten us?

7salmonswimming · 01/01/2019 21:13

I dont live in the EU, I’m watching this from afar.

So much energy wasted (mostly in such a British passive-aggressive way 😂) amongst the politicos, journos and civilians mud slinging, blaming, whining, catastrophising, hand-wringing, doomsdaying.....it’s crazy! It’s as though Remainers are just waiting for the chance to say “See!! Told you!! Look what you’ve done to us” and “you got us into this mess, you get us out!!”.

So immature and self-defeating.

Evidently, the UK is a country of people who mostlywanted out or didn’t care enough to vote to stay in, or who allowed themselves to believe the propaganda.

🤷‍♀️

You’ve a choice.

1: get your heads around the fact that these are your compatriots, get your best minds together and make something of it
2: don’t, and see what happens.

You’re all in it together, like it or not. Why are you wasting all this time and energy shouting at each other??

Dongdingdong · 01/01/2019 21:13

These threads are so depressing. Leavers never come up with anything that is both positive and likely to happen as a consequence of Brexit.

See my previous post about the UK having the chance to ban live exports. How is that not a positive? I’m a remainer but I’m determined to think positive and make the best of things. All this moaning and hysteria simply doesn’t help anyone.

Ta1kinPeace · 01/01/2019 21:13

Dongdingdong
Because the USA has stated that any trade agreement STARTS with agriculture
do you not keep up to date with the news?

User758172 · 01/01/2019 21:16

I brought it up - as I said upthread, if you’d bothered to read it -

Immigration is a huge concern for many people. The perpetrator’s parents were given asylum in this country and the young man himself was given every advantage by this country. What did we gain from it? It’s not unreasonable to question whether our immigration policies have been keeping the public safe.

Moussemoose · 01/01/2019 21:16

@7salmonswimming opposition is vital to a democracy. Discussion, debate and argument make a democracy function.

You are suggestion the operation of democracy is "immature and self defeating" I would be interested to know which country you are commenting from.

User758172 · 01/01/2019 21:17

@Ta1kinPeace

Jeez, why so aggressive?! Lord above.

Mrstwiddle · 01/01/2019 21:17

All the scaremongering on here reminds me of the run up to the millennium. I can understand why people who voted remain aren’t happy but enough with all the doom and gloom. Change happens and generally it may not be very comfortable but that’s life.

Mistigri · 01/01/2019 21:17

Why would people do such a crazy thing?

Because a lot of them were quite stupid and almost all of them underinformed (or misinformed).
