Marriage certificate

Frogqueen13 · 31/12/2018 18:45

Not really aibu but need posting for traffic.

Threw my marriage certificate away by mistake, paid £23.40 via the gov website for a replacement so we can apply for our mortgage and they have sent us a photocopy....

Is this right? How can I get a photo copy verified?

£23.40 for a photocopy!!

Aibu to expect an actual certificate?

@ivykaty44 I will try again tomorrow, I will also go to the reg office.

Its just so frustrating. I paid for a copy... a copy came... no one will accept it as it doesn't look official enough, I get left over xmas and new year trying to sort it out

Only for everyone to say it is a copy and the bank and post office are wrong

Go to the register office and take the copy certificate, explain that you have order this copy and the bank won’t except the certificate as certified and ask there advice

Collaborate · 02/01/2019 07:29

I think what you've got is not a certified copy. Did you get it in pdf format? I went to the gov website you went to and at the start of the process there was this message, which seems pretty clear to me.

Marriage certificate
2019rubberband · 02/01/2019 08:04

The PDF is for births and deaths dating from the 1800's until mid 1900's.

SoupDragon · 02/01/2019 08:12

I guessing that it's being refused because it looks like a dodgy photocopy of a certified copy rather than an actual certified copy (The picture has been removed).

I ordered one from the appropriate local registry office for my divorce and it looked like an actual certificate, albeit with printed names rather than signatures I think (although I may have misremembered that bit)

BlueBell50 · 02/01/2019 08:13

Another registrar here. I echo the earlier registrar who advised you to go to local office. They can check if you have a problem or not. I have written notes in the past for customers confirming that what they have is genuine and if the post office has a problem they can phone me for confirmation. I hope it all works out for you.

NorthernKnickers · 02/01/2019 08:29

I went to the registry office to get a certified copy of my marriage certificate. It looks just like the original but with 'certified copy' on it. Maybe try that?

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 10:02

Thanks everyone

I will let you know how i get on

2019rubberband · 02/01/2019 10:55

northern

That's exactly what OP has.

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 11:18

@2019rubberband just stop posting now

You have said the same thing over and over again its getting a bit boring

You have said both the post office and bank is wrong

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 02/01/2019 11:29

I have said that what you applied for, through the correct channels, and posted a picture of, IS a certified copy. The GRO sends lots of these out weekly, that's why they have a link on the GOV website, to make sure people go to the right place. It's highly unlikely they would randomly send you a wrong copy. That and the fact you posted a picture of the actual certified copy lean me to believe that yes, the bank and post office are wrong.

I will stop posting as you wish, and I hope you get this sorted out.

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 12:01

They sent us the wrong copy.

I have just got off the phone to the GRO and it should have- handwritten at the bottom this is a certified copy. It should also be on heavy paper with a water mark on

They are refunding us and we have ordered one from our local council which according to the registry off will be an a4 certificate that is green and looks like an actual certificate but that wont be here til Friday

Just here for the apology post

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2019 12:31

Frog queen I’m sorry that they sent you the wrong document - never heard of the GRO not sending a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate before.

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 12:48

@IAmRubbishAtDIY not sure what thats supposed to mean tbh

@ivykaty44 me neither but it sums up my life at the minute everything I touch is going wrong so I shouldn't be suprised

I have also had a passport arrive with the wrong date of birth on, applied online and typed it in and they messed up. Im just going to hide in a cave and not request anything official in future

ivykaty44 · 02/01/2019 12:51

Hopefully officialdom will improve for you and at least local office will have certificate with you in 2 days

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 02/01/2019 13:09

Well OP you had one or two posts that insisted that you had the correct thing despite the fact that actually, it was the wrong copy after all.

llangennith · 02/01/2019 13:22

Hopefully 2019rubberband really will stop posting now.
Glad it's sorted OP.

POllOcKs · 02/01/2019 13:33

Why have you had to have a marriage certificate? You normally need a passport or driving licence as they have photos and utility bills to prove where you currently live, these are required for money laundering checks.I have very recently bought and sold a house and these were the only documents required.

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 14:16

Yes @IAmRubbishAtDIY mainly from you!

I dont know @POllOcKs thats what they asked for so thats what I am providing

OP posts:
IAmRubbishAtDIY · 02/01/2019 14:21

Mainly from me?

leghairdontcare · 02/01/2019 14:40

I assumed it was the bank being stupid - from bitter experience. At least you know now OP and it seems GRO are dealing with it well.

POllOcKs · 02/01/2019 16:42

Frofqueen, great name, askthe bank.I can think of no good reason why they need it .

SoupDragon · 02/01/2019 17:32

I have said that what you applied for, through the correct channels, and posted a picture of, IS a certified copy.

😂😂😂

Anyway, glad you've sorted it and will have an actual certified copy now :)

Frogqueen13 · 02/01/2019 17:57

So I rang the bank- its just proof of name change. Nothing exciting at all
