Frogqueen13 · 31/12/2018 18:45

Not really aibu but need posting for traffic.

Threw my marriage certificate away by mistake, paid £23.40 via the gov website for a replacement so we can apply for our mortgage and they have sent us a photocopy....

Is this right? How can I get a photo copy verified?

£23.40 for a photocopy!!

Aibu to expect an actual certificate?

You've left you're address visible you might wanna as mnhq to remove it

2019rubberband · 31/12/2018 21:00

So where to I get it certified the post office said no as its a photocopy?

That IS a certified copy.

leghairdontcare · 31/12/2018 21:07

That's a certified copy. It says so on it. The post office are right - they cannot certify it as a copy because it is already certified as a copy and neither they nor you have access to the original.

Frogqueen13 · 31/12/2018 22:15

It is a photocopy of a certified copy the bank also refused it. There is no embossed anything on it

2019rubberband · 31/12/2018 22:21

It's a certified copy.

Frogqueen13 · 31/12/2018 22:24

@2019rubberband what makes ypu say that?

Its on white a4 printer paper.

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 31/12/2018 22:27

Because that's what it is.

A certified copy.

shggg245 · 01/01/2019 00:19

If your in any doubt take it to your local register office and let them have a look. Alternatively ring GRO, failing that you can always get a certified copy from the register Office covering the district where your marriage took place.

Should cost £10.00 but you may have to pay extra for a quick turnaround. All marriage certificates issued by GRO or your local RO are certified copies if the original which is the marriage register and stays I will the register Office for ever.

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 11:13

@shggg245

Thankyou i will do that

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 11:20

Not being funny but you have already done that. Your document is from the GRO. It's a certified copy.

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 16:51

@2019rubberband

You have said that repeatedly

But both the bank and post office have refused it.

What else am I supposed to do, you have said the same thing multiple times. None of which has helped me sort this out.

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 17:16

Ask them why they have refused it. Bit is a certified copy from the GRO?

What more do they want?

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 17:34

That's exactly what i would like to know!

They said i could have just photocopied it at home, it didn't look official and they wouldn't accept it.

OP posts:
leghairdontcare · 01/01/2019 17:43

Who said that, the bank? Can you show them proof that you applied via the GRO?

Could you also clarify why you need your marriage certifcate to apply for a mortgage as that is unusual unless you haven't updated your ID.

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 17:47

Its what they have asked for

Driving licence, passport, a certified copy of the marriage certificate and a utility bill from the last 3 months

I can show them the email but its a bit of a faff

Both the bank and post office have said it.

OP posts:
2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 17:48

Do you have a covering letter that came with it? Perhaps you could take that?

IAmRubbishAtDIY · 01/01/2019 17:51

Which council area did you get married in?

leghairdontcare · 01/01/2019 17:59

The post office are correct - They cannot certify it as they don't have the original.

The bank are wrong as you are providing them with a certified copy of your marriage certificate which is what they have requested to process the mortgage. What bank is it? And are you dealing with the mortgage department directly or someone on the counter?

PooleySpooley · 01/01/2019 18:03

Mine was taken off me when I got divorced then I had to pay for a copy of it in order to get married again. Shock

ivykaty44 · 01/01/2019 18:07

How else do you expect to get a copy? You and your husbands signature is on the original, along with the witnesses signature- unless you all go to the register office and it gets written out again and you all sing it - how would the GRO produce a copy certificate without photocopies?

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 18:49

No cover letter just this in an envelope

Its the mortgage people of lloyds bank,

My SIL just showed me her copy... its on embossed paper from the same area

OP posts:
lalalalyra · 01/01/2019 18:54

If it's come on just plain white A4 paper then you need to phone or email GRO and tell them that you've been sent the wrong thing.

It should be on official paper. It will be a printed copy, but it'll be signed and certified at the bottom, and that won't be a copy. Does it have that signature?

2019rubberband · 01/01/2019 19:15

It's certified. You can see in the picture. It's a certified copy. From the GRO.

Frogqueen13 · 01/01/2019 19:48

No there is nothing freshly written on it

OP posts:
ivykaty44 · 01/01/2019 20:26

It’s a certified copy from the GRO just the same as you get a certified copy from the local register office.

Just tell Lloyds that it’s a certified copy as it has it written on the certificate

GRO do copies with a machine and local offices have a different system for copy certificates

GRO is the head office

Sounds like the staff at Lloyds aren’t clued up on copy certificates if they’ve refused it
