Even if someone has been here working hard and paying tax for decades they will have to pay £65 to stay and there's only an android app to apply not even an iPhone app!

When you check out of a hotel, you settle your bill right? You don't do a runner!

BeardedMum · 30/12/2018 23:13

Why do some British people think this country had such an amasing benefit system us foreigners want ti take the piss out of? To me the British benefit system is nothing to be proud of. If I wanted benefits I would stay in my home country😂

coldheartwarmhands · 30/12/2018 23:14

You don't want the UK to be seen as an unreliable rogue state that doesn't honour its commitments, do you?

TBF, our reputation is so shot to pieces now, I'm not sure it would make any difference if we just did a runner. I'm sure there are some EU countries who are so disgusted with us that they would prefer not to accept anything from us on principle Hmm

TotesEmoshTerri · 30/12/2018 23:21

To be fair I usually do just leave and let them bill the card I left on file.. the EU could do this too perhaps, if we want to stretch the metaphor Grin

Vicky1990 · 30/12/2018 23:26

I don't think anyone called us a rogue state when we liberated most of the EU countries in the two world wars.
Did they pay up what they owed to us, our country's wealth spent in buying arms from the USA for a start.
They owe us a dept far more than money, a dept of honour, I don't think we owe them a penny.

Helmetbymidnight · 30/12/2018 23:28

We’re a country of morons {see above post}

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2018 23:31

Weeps.

I can’t decide in laughter or horror.

onegiftedgal · 30/12/2018 23:32

But for the sake of £65 you still want to live here right? I just don't understand this trivial amount in the grand scheme of things. I can't imagine that it's cheaper to pack all your family up and move back to your country of birth but maybe I'm missing something?

LittleBearPad · 30/12/2018 23:33

Let’s assume you are gifted

Maldives2006 · 30/12/2018 23:41

It’s the principle if they do move back are they going to get all of their unused national insurance contributions back?

onegiftedgal · 30/12/2018 23:42

@avenueq
And let me guess; you live in the South East - perhaps a hop from France with easy access back home to Germany?

Maldives2006 · 30/12/2018 23:43

Check your history books!!

Maldives2006 · 30/12/2018 23:45

They are the people who didn’t pay attention in history !!

I'm not an EU national but I'm not sure I wouldn't want to pack up and leave (as a great many have already) if I was. It not just the £65, it the general attitude and feeling in this country that has changed. We've made it very clear that we don't like immigrants and are willing to see enormous economic damage done to our country to get rid of them.

avenueq · 31/12/2018 00:02

@onegiftedgal why would you think that?

avenueq · 31/12/2018 00:05

Is it really so hard to understand that it's not about the money? It's about having a British family for me, and having contributed in many many ways to British society, for then now to have to apply for permission to stay.

Tiddler7 · 31/12/2018 00:17

Yes Vicky, Britain literally won both wars singlehanded 🙄🙄🙄

BeardedMum · 31/12/2018 00:26

Britain won both wars and everyone who lives in other European countries wants to go to Britain to claim their amasing benefits.

manicmij · 31/12/2018 00:30

Justabetterplayer: I too don't think it is unreasonable for anyone who moved to UK from another country EU and outside to register and pay the relatively low fee. If that's all it takes it is child's play. As you say try living in USA, Canada, Australia. If you do manage to jump through all the hoops you will have paid out a lot more that £65.. Neighbours wanted to move to Australia. Son of 24 died suddenly here and daughter in Australia hence move. They had to sell house to pay fee of £50,000 each to be allowed in. Both 48 years old considered too old for immigration hence the payments. Canada, friend married a Canadian, lecturer at Uni friend a fertility specialist. Moving back home to Canada as new Uni post. Friend had to undergo an intense process to be allowed to move with DH. Only allowed to work after 6 months residency and clean record. Also had to understand basic french, which she did anyway. Not an easy process even when married to a National or have a highly specialised skill. If the numbers don't fit in with the immigration expectation then you don't get in plus there is no health cover for a year.

BeardedMum I do miss fb likes here 😁

DeepanKrispanEven · 31/12/2018 01:02

everyone who lives in other European countries wants to go to Britain to claim their amasing benefits

Only someone with zero knowledge of the benefits system could write that.

Dita73 · 31/12/2018 01:08

The “yellow star” comment was a despicable thing to say. Disgusting

Helmetbymidnight · 31/12/2018 07:07

We must all pretend that a comment about yellow stars is more despicable and disgusting than what this country is doing.

swingofthings · 31/12/2018 07:14

However as smoeone said above the Uk has regularly changed immigration rules so the fact it was utterly uncertain would be part of people's decision making process when they decided to risk it and move here but not become a british citizen and not to give up their original passport and put themselves in the same position as most people in the UK
There's a difference between changing rules and applying to new people and revoking what was given to them, that what a number of posters have tired to explain that some posters just can't get.

Imagine you are referred by your gp to the hospital for an op. You have it, you feel good afterwards and you didn't have to pay for it because you are told the nhs is free at entry. 10 years later, the government decides the nhs can't cope, people vote for a law couldn't vote for and/or agree to, and 1year later, they decide that all those people who had the particular surgery you had, amongst other treatment, need to pay a contribution of £65 towards that surgery to the nhs going back 25 years otherwise, you cant ever have access to the nhs again.

Then people tell you 'well you knew that the law could change at any time, it's known to do that, you shouldn't have had that non essential surgery at that time', and stop moaning, it's only £65, I had to pay £2000 to have that surgery done privately so count yourself lucky!

swingofthings · 31/12/2018 07:17

When I last took my car to France I had to pay over £100 in road toll charges
Well that was nothing. With the state of the £ against the €, it will cost you a lot more now to visit France for who knows how long. I wonder whose fault that is!
