to hate my teenage son's music

Drill, rap, whatever, how I loathe it.

I grew up with and even looked back to - Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac, The Cure, The Clash, Shirley Bassey, Madonna, The Beatles, Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash, the Cars, the Beach Boys, Sister Sledge, Joan Armatrading, T Rex, 10 cc, Manic Street Preachers, Simon & Garfunkel, Nirvana, Siousie and the Banshees, Happy Mondays, Donna Summer, etc etc etc. Some of these artists were before my time but I still loved them!!!! So much!!! Some of them I discovered more as an adult it must be said. But even as a teenager I had a sense of other music OK I drew the line at John McCormack which my mother liked.

40 years on, my son listens to the most awful (IMO) misogynist, violent, dreary crap rap, drill whatever the hell its called and watches their shite violent music videos. But he insists its artistic, melodic and wonderful.

AIBU? Genuine question.

I literally drowned our house out with trance and hardcore music so it could be worse. My parents learnt to regret getting me the sound system I wanted for my 18th Grin. Just flip the circuit breaker for his bedroom once in a while as revenge.

Also most of the artists you mentioned would make me want to scream, but at least you didn’t say ‘Enya’ Confused

Treessy · 29/12/2018 00:44

I like(d) trance and dance music (couldn't think of names though). What I'm trying to say - I like all kinds of music. I hope this isn't gonna be a trolling thread.

I can totally accept people liking different styles of music, but I hugely struggle with people listening to misogynistic music. I realise it doesn't necessarily mean they are sexist, but it does mean that sexist isn't off putting enough to them to put them off the music.

So I'd be upset if one of my children liked music like that, yes.

Ribbonsonabox · 29/12/2018 00:45

Well you dont have to like the same things he likes so no yanbu! But by the same token its up to him what he enjoys and if hes engaged by that then good for him.... I love all the bands you listed in your OP but when I was a teen I was also obsessed with eminem! That music got me through some dark times and I genuinely found comfort and merit in it... my parents understandably on some levels, thought it was absolute damaging trash.... however they also thought that about Nirvana (dark, violent, depressing)
Parents sometimes just dont get why their kids engage with the things they do... that's been going on for centuries! And music is such a personal thing..... I guess just try and be happy that he is passionate about and gets enjoyment out of something?

Gomyownway · 29/12/2018 00:45

How am I being a troll?

You dislike the music your son likes because you think it’s below you artistically. You write all rap and hip hop off as mysoginisitc and violent, playing into the media stereotype of black people listening to ‘thug music’.

It is completely 100% music snobbery. People can like what they like, including your son. Some rap music is incredibly poetic and artistic. Some of it is about big butts. The only person being narrow is you.

BubonicBudgie · 29/12/2018 00:45

I don't like most of the stuff you like
And a lot of the crap you mentioned is misogynistic, and I guess I'm older than you
HTH

KC225 · 29/12/2018 00:47

I know what you mean. I have had this conversation with my DH. I think popular music was more important to previous generations. Radio stations seemed to play more diverse and different artists. I remember 'Top of the Pops' was the main topic at school. The chart show on ITV on a Saturday morning. Sunday night listening to the chart run down.

Young people today seemed more interested in YouTubers, latest games and gamers etc. But then I think its partly the law to loathe your teenagers music.

tittietinsel · 29/12/2018 00:47

YABU to think only current music is misogynistic.

Treessy · 29/12/2018 00:47

Its not even music though, Stompy. Just a beat. No melody. Its not just even the crude lyrics about women. Hates the police. etc etc. Just kind of hate-to-a-beat. I wouldn't even call it music.

PickAChew · 29/12/2018 00:48

My parents told me that Duran Duran a d the like would never endure.

JustABetterPlayer · 29/12/2018 00:48

Oh come on the Ops not being unfair, rap music is shit.

Ribbonsonabox · 29/12/2018 00:49

People said that about punk... people say that every generation 'it's just noise how can you listen to that!!'

Treessy · 29/12/2018 00:49

Oh well, people are just trolling me now. Even Nirvana had melodies, is what I'm trying to get across. The wide range of musical tastes. Even before my "era" I appreciated. Can people be less personal or is it just gonna be trolling here?

The whole point of teenage music is to shock parents. The more your parents hate it, the better.
It's the same with fashions.

The more you tell him you hate it, the more he will like it.

Yanbu to dislike his choice, but you could perhaps be reinforcing his "liking" by letting him know how much.

KidLorneRoll · 29/12/2018 00:50

Parents aren't supposed to like their kids music; it's the law. My parents like Fleetwood Mac too, despite them being fucking awful.

BartholinsSister · 29/12/2018 00:50

The best thing you can do to discourage him is to ask who the artist is and pretend you really like it.

JustABetterPlayer · 29/12/2018 00:51

It’s 1am, just us folk that don’t sleep and trolls remaining Grin

As to the above, punk was rubbish as well so they where quite correct.

Ribbonsonabox · 29/12/2018 00:51

I mean are we finally there? You are the one who is actually right rather than just getting a bit old when you say 'this is just noise!'? Is this finally THE DEATH OF MUSIC.... I mean probably not... therell probably be music your sons kids listen to that he will say the same things about

tittietinsel · 29/12/2018 00:51

Oh well, people are just trolling me now.

You mean disagreeing?

Treessy · 29/12/2018 00:51

Punk often had a melody of some kind Ribbon. And it was diverse in its own way, from the Clash to X Ray Specs.

Treessy · 29/12/2018 00:52

I’m just thinking about the music I used to listen to as a teen! 😳
Surely it’s something that everyone has to go through and experience?
NOONES parents like their music! If they do it means they are listening to shite!
