Drill, rap, whatever, how I loathe it.

I grew up with and even looked back to - Sinatra, Fleetwood Mac, The Cure, The Clash, Shirley Bassey, Madonna, The Beatles, Iggy Pop, Johnny Cash, the Cars, the Beach Boys, Sister Sledge, Joan Armatrading, T Rex, 10 cc, Manic Street Preachers, Simon & Garfunkel, Nirvana, Siousie and the Banshees, Happy Mondays, Donna Summer, etc etc etc. Some of these artists were before my time but I still loved them!!!! So much!!! Some of them I discovered more as an adult it must be said. But even as a teenager I had a sense of other music OK I drew the line at John McCormack which my mother liked.

40 years on, my son listens to the most awful (IMO) misogynist, violent, dreary crap rap, drill whatever the hell its called and watches their shite violent music videos. But he insists its artistic, melodic and wonderful.

AIBU? Genuine question.

OP, you sound exactly like my opera- and madrigal-loving mother speaking about the Beatles. I was quite old before I discovered that music written after WW1 could actually be worth listening to. It made my life poorer.

Nothing worse than a music snob

Serial killer, fascist dictator, religious suicide bomber? I think it would have been better if Osama Bin Laden had moaned about rap music rather that organising the destruction of the Twin Towers.

MorganKitten · 22/04/2020 10:51

You know a lot of the artists you listed sang about drugs/alcohol. You listed the Beatles, John Lennon used to beat his partners.

You can find something wrong with any music and artist if you loo hard enough.

YANBU we are supposed to hate the kids' music. I hate DDs (don't tell her).
My Dad hated mine.
That's how it's supposed to work.

What I would have found creepy would have been my Dad trying to cling to his youth and feigning interest in my music.

One of the tweets in response to that Viz comic tweet made me smile -

"Why can't they write a tune the postman can whistle these days? Back in my youth we had proper songs like 'Smack My Bitch Up' and 'Killing in the Name of', today all the music they listen to is noisy and aggressive.."

YABU. I hate that sort of music too, but I’m sure my parents felt the same about the thrash metal I loved as a teen (and still listen to occasionally).

corythatwas · 22/04/2020 11:35

The drugs and alcohol bit: I still have vivid memories of my 9yo dd and her little friends earnestly singing I Get High With A Little Help From My Friends at the school concert, conducted by a school teacher.

Aliceo8, yeah I'm hoping all those lyrics about blow jobs and facials are gonna help my kids come through their teenage years Hmm
