Hi everyone

I have lurgy and I feel miserable with it. I'm feeling rubbish and drowning in my own snot. Who else is sick? Remedies please! Grin

Oh FFS. I’ve just googled Glandular Fever and I have all the symptoms. I also teach at a university and 3 of my fresher personal tutees had it in October and coughed all over me in my tiny office before I sent them home. One was hospitalised and had his spleen removed but kept coming to see me every single week and coughing all over me despite me asking him to stay home until he was better and getting him EMCS for the semester. The incubation period is around 6 weeks 😩 which makes it bang fucking on. Shit.

Nomorechickens · 04/01/2019 14:54

I am taking decongestants which seem to stop the streaming eyes and constant coughing up watery mucus. They last 6 hours so I can get 6 hours sleep before waking up coughing. I go to bed with a tissue with Olbas Oil on under my chin.
Active ingredient - phenylephrine hydrochloride
A lot of them have paracetemol and caffeine in too, but you can get ones without in Wilko, Asda and maybe other places.
Also if you feel a cold coming on, take zinc tablets for 5 days - some tests showed it to be the only effictive anti-cold remedy a while back
Then sit at home and drink tea!

WanderingTrolley1 · 04/01/2019 23:20

Viruses and chest infections here! Not one member of the family have escaped the rot!

LadyBathory · 04/01/2019 23:29

Me and my baby are sick, snot coming out of the ears haven’t had a decent nights sleep in ages, managed to get her to bed early for the first Time since she got sick and she just woke up and refusing all bed!! Nooooooooo. It started as a horrible ear ache and now I’m full on Rudolph. Drinking a cheeky beer before I go back to her (ex is with her atm) a little gutted as I’ve been sick since a bit before Christmas......

I just want it to end!

pineapplebryanbrown · 05/01/2019 00:10

My sister has recovered and promises it is 2.5 weeks, we shall see.

Shady you are sick!!! It's not lurgy, ooh?

losing the plot here, lurgy day 3, still have a fever, 2 hours sleep out of the last 48 and no sleep in sight purely as my nose will not stop dripping and sneezing... every time I get close to dropping off I sneeze. Fuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuck youuuuuuuuu virus

oh and now the cough is starting too. ffs.

lubeybooby · 05/01/2019 02:22

oh and I am sneezing so hard I see stars and get really painful pins and needles and aches all down my back, chest and arms, especially my elbows. wtf is THAT?

not forgotting the explosive diarrhoea, a new add on today

oh and I'm regretting keeping hydrated as I'm now peeing pretty much clear water every 20 mins which is also keeping me awake and my pelvic floor is rapidly threatening to let me down.

I repeat, ffs

SpoonBlender · 05/01/2019 02:53

Stacks of lurgy here. The only saving graces are (a) I took until Monday off as hols rather than starting on the 2nd, and (b) honey and ginger lemsips are much nicer than lemon or blackcurrant.

Also hot toddies honey/lemon/ginger with leftover Xmas brandy in pint mugs. But not mixed with the lemsips, obviously.

pineapplebryanbrown · 05/01/2019 03:07

Lubey you poor thing, i think you should give up and lie in the bath until all the various liquids have drained from you. Perhaps you should wear a cycle helmet so as not to bang your head mid sneeze.

Seriously though benylin night cough mixture saved my bacon and drugged me to sleep.

pineapplebryanbrown · 05/01/2019 03:09

Spoon good job on the brandy. You may as well get completely arseholed, you won't even notice the hangover.

pineapplebryanbrown · 05/01/2019 03:12

I'm so tired and can't sleep properly. Even emptying the dishwasher i feel like i have built the burma railway singlehandedly.

SpoonBlender · 05/01/2019 03:43

Working on it! Actually on rum for this round. Hic.

Same as you, so tired I can't sleep, I've been fading in and out for the last three days (I think - could be longer). Don't know if I'm going to make it in on Monday at this rate. Blearrrghh. I have having colds, they're such a waste of life and energy.

Big sympathy to everyone else out there all bugged up.

SpoonBlender · 05/01/2019 03:45

have having colds hate having colds. Thanks, fingers.

lubeybooby · 05/01/2019 07:27

thighofrelief lol thanks for the mental image... me with bike helmet on in the bath just like 'so what... bring it on'

think I managed about 2.5 hours sleep. not good enough but really hoping the bastard nose dries up a bit today. that will help so much

YoThePussy · 05/01/2019 08:02

Nosebags are the way to go. Small bag on elastic and slipped over the head with couple of ventilation holes. Perfect for catching all gushings from the nose. Not clear though as no one else wants to see the contents. These will be the ‘must wear’ item of 2019.

Airwaves chewing gum is good, get the one with black packaging, is called Hardcore Mint or similar. Chew two or three at once for best results.

Covonia vapour drops are good as an alternative to Olbas oil, not as strong smelling. Means you can go about your business without that telltale Bring Out Your Dead/Plague Pit smell.

Vicks chest rub is a comfort too, old remedy but a good ‘un.

lubeybooby · 05/01/2019 08:14

Soon as he's up I am sending DP out for all those items @YoThePussy and do my best poker face acting that nosebags are a thing and he must find one

lubeybooby · 05/01/2019 14:36

hmpf, couldn't fool him, best I got was a brief look of confusion. He has returned with covonia nighttime though which is my fave, plus vaseline for my nose (really sore despite balsam tissues) and various things like lockets, soothers, olbas oil etc.

@thighofrelief101 I have adopted your iron lung method. My cough decided to start when my ribs already absolutely kill from the three days of violent batshit sneezing, which is nice

a quick google suggests my painful pins and needles all over back, chest and arms when violently batshit sneezing is likely a vit b12 deficiency so will have to work on that

YoThePussy · 05/01/2019 18:06

lubeybooby my nose bag is an old sequinned evening bag. The sparkles cheer me up immensely.

Very interested in the vit b12 info as often get pins and needles when coughing if some food goes down the wrong way.

I am a martyr to pain and misery I keep telling my Dfamily. No one cares, no one cares (walks off snivelling).

OldBean2 · 05/01/2019 19:45

I am on the second round, lost my voice on Thursday and currently sound like Mariella Frostrup on speed.

Feel cream crackered, and so full of catarrh, need to break the back of this bug. I have had it since before Christmas Xmas Sad

lubeybooby · 06/01/2019 09:57

I finally got some sleep. Thank you covonia night time

ShadyLady53 · 06/01/2019 10:05

Back from seeing a GP ...got to go for Blood Tests ☹️. Feeling knackered today and still got gland pain, face pain etc and he said my throat still looks inflamed. Cough is better though so...that’s something.

pineapplebryanbrown · 06/01/2019 21:18

OldBean has it occurred to you that you are Mariela Frostrup on speed? Ring the speaking clock and ask them.

OP posts:
pineapplebryanbrown · 06/01/2019 21:20

Lubey it's the Patented Iron Lung Method. I'm glad it helped, i invented it a few winters ago when I was worried my ribs would pierce my eyeballs.

OP posts:
pineapplebryanbrown · 06/01/2019 21:23

Shady did Dr throw a strepsil at you or take it seriously? Have they got you on ABs?

Currently you are winning the thread as sickest in show.
