to wish my mother would talk normally?

Every sentence has some twee, often made-up word in it.

“Pass me the dooda” instead of “pass me that plate”.

“Would you like a sploosh of tea?” instead of “would you like a tea?”

“be careful in case the fridge makes an avalanche” instead of “the fridge is full so be careful”.

It just makes me cringe. It’s impossible to talk to her normally. I know we all have our own little mannerisms but it’s just constant and grating. The thing is that she’s so grumpy and angry most of the time that it just doesn’t go with her personality at all which makes it more annoying.

OP everyone has some annoying habits. In the case of family, life is too short to let it get in the way of having a good relationship. Let it go; like I’m sure your relatives let yours go! It’s christmas, pour yourself a sploosh of sherry, pass your mum the dooda and unclench a little.

DaphneFanshaw · 24/12/2018 11:53

Oh gosh, I think you would probably hate me. I do a bit of what your Mum does.
tbh, I read your post and thought, what a cantankerous dick.
I think that’s my issue tough, I know you’re just having a moan.
I would be gutted if my dc found me as annoying as you find your Mum.

DaphneFanshaw · 24/12/2018 11:54

I agree with having a drink and chilling out. Your Mum is probably fed up with you rolling your eyes every time she opens her mouth.

Travisandthemonkey · 24/12/2018 11:56

God my mum does this. And it’s very annoying!

SixButterflies · 24/12/2018 11:57

That kind of verbal tickery would make me want to slap someone after the second or third iteration.

Much sympathy, OP.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 11:58

theory I don’t get people like uou. On a thread where you said to basically let my mum’s speech patterns be, you then slag off my soeech patterns. Very inconsistent.

sb I am a clenched person generally. There will be no drinking (or I’ll get a barrage of ‘DRINKKKING?????) from her. Yes everyoke has annoying habits but if you think my mother lets any of mine go, you’re very wrong. Taking more than two minutes in the shower, wearing make up, drying one’s hair, buying things not on sale are all cause for remark in this house. This morning, the fact that I ate a biscuit before my actual breakfast (which is toast) was cause for a full blown conversation about my weird quirks.

daphne I don’t roll my eyes, I just answer her. Where did you get that from?

dolliebauble · 24/12/2018 11:59

I'd be hated too, oh well. I can't always think of the word I need, so say things like your mum does. I had a teacher at school when I was 8 that said I talk in riddles... horrible witch.

dolliebauble · 24/12/2018 11:59

the teacher.. not you!

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 11:59

dollie she can think of the word just fine. It’s not that. She thinks it’s funny/endearing.

SB1189 · 24/12/2018 12:01

Oh well OP now you’ve just given us a sploosh of dripfeed.

DaphneFanshaw · 24/12/2018 12:02

Just your tone in general, I’m always like this.
You come across as a glarey eye roller.

diddl · 24/12/2018 12:02

I sometimes say pass me the dooda or whatsit or thingy whilst pointing in the general direction when for some reason the name of what I want escapes me.

Sploosh isn't a made up word but there are a couple of meanings!

I quite like the fridge avalanche-definitely been on the recieving end of a couple of those!

I can see how it would be annoying if what is being said doesn't make sense/is deliberately nonsensical.

roarfeckingroar · 24/12/2018 12:03

Why do you only see your own mother once a year OP!?

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 12:03

daphne well it’s hard to read tone of the internet, so you’re extrapolating somewhat.

Limensoda · 24/12/2018 12:04

Oh god!....How AWFUL for you!

(Get a grip!!)

Travisandthemonkey · 24/12/2018 12:04

Hahaha
I got called self indulgent and lazy because I got up at 9.30 and not the crack of dawn!

And honestly, I would drink and take the judgy comments, it’s the only way to deal with it.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 12:04

roar I live far away and we generally don’t get on.

Aridane · 24/12/2018 12:04

I’m not trying to be horrible about her

but, let’s face it, that is how you are coming across...

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 12:04

lime I never said it was awful, did I?

OP posts:
IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 12:05

aridane perhaps. I’m sure we all have stuff we’d like to moan about on here rather than take it on people to their faces.

cuppycakey · 24/12/2018 12:05

Christ that would drive me crazy OP - YANBU.

Meangirls36 · 24/12/2018 12:05

Seriously just ask her to stop don't make a big thing out of it. Just say stop it mum!

DaphneFanshaw · 24/12/2018 12:06

Grin k.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 24/12/2018 12:07

meangirls but it’s literally asking her to change her entire speech pattern which I doubt she’s even aware of really.
