To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Because I can't have gluten and that makes it pretty difficult. I wish I could though. But I've cut down on meat and eggs. And I don't eat cheese.

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 18:07

When I die and am buried, the worms are never going to be vegan are they?

It is the cycle of life.

Cremation is available, I know that, but we have an eight member plot in the cemetery and only two are in there so far!

Sorry, that sounds bit off the wall, but I am sure many will understand what I mean. Thank you.

CherubRocking · 22/12/2018 18:08

I am vegetarian 20 years and dont drink milk but do eat cheese, I hate myself for it as I know very well how horrible and disgraceful it is. One day we will look back in disgust at ourselves I swear

BeanTownNancy · 22/12/2018 18:08

I'm allergic to nightshades and mushrooms. No potatoes, tomatoes, aubergine, mushrooms, quorn, peppers, etc. My diet would be very difficult without meats and cheese and eggs, and my life is quite difficult enough already.

icannotremember · 22/12/2018 18:08

Greed and laziness tbh. Not eating meat or fish is easy- I never really liked it, and one day just decided to stop. But I do love cheese, and so many things contain eggs and/or dairy that it's a real ovary ache to avoid them.

We're doing veganuary next month though and hope it will inspire us to be closer to vegan for the rest of the year :)

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:09

@mooncuplanding human brains have been shrinking in general. Not because of veganism.

Ugh all the bacon tho comments. The pigs shit themselves and vomit when they are in the trucks and in the kill line. I used to love it but it's just not worth it. I've heard them screaming in the gondala which is a big cage they put them in and pump co2 gas to burn them from inside out. It's not right just for a fleeting 5 minutes of taste. I don't care if I sound preachy, if they were dogs I'd be told I'm a nice person, but pigs, who cares.

We don't even need it, anthropologists have shown that it was probably cooking starches that caused our brains to grow not meat. Meat would have been hard to get and unreliable. I'm surprised at some of the myths in here.

Can't live without butter or mayo! I swapped cows milk for oat milk, and I gave up meat and fish.

CarlGrimesMissingEye · 22/12/2018 18:11

Because I like meat.
Because I like dairy.
Because I think if everyone blindly went vegan we'd replace one set of problems for another different set.
Because cheese.

HTKS · 22/12/2018 18:12

As others have said, because humans are supposed to eat meat and eggs if they can obtain them.

Dairy is totally different. We’re not meant to eat it and it’s not good for us. And it’s cruel. At some point when I’m ready, I hope to give up dairy.

Armchairanarchist · 22/12/2018 18:12

I can't give up milk, butter and cream. I'd be on a permanent feeding line without them.

ABCagain · 22/12/2018 18:13

Ok this thread has made me hungry, am going to make a Cheese Fondue and dip strips of rare steak in it. Heavenly.

MamaLovesMango · 22/12/2018 18:13

Because I don’t want to. I enjoy what I eat and Im happy with shopping very, very carefully for ethically produced, sustainable and local products where possible which is more than a lot of my vegan friends do!

AlexanderHamilton · 22/12/2018 18:13

I like chicken, fish, milk chocolate, cream cakes, cows milk in tea.

I don’t like grains, pulses, soya and pretty much anything vegans eat.

booksandcaffeine · 22/12/2018 18:13

The cost (apart from own dairy free milks), the overuse of nuts and seeds in some food, Quorn, falafel and the attitude from some vegans (the ones who can appear to be preachy).

I do however enjoy Linda McCartney red onion and rosemary sausages. But never get why dairy free products are also gluten free 🤔

AlexanderHamilton · 22/12/2018 18:13

And how could I forget eggs. I love them.

Seniorschoolmum · 22/12/2018 18:14

I like my food too much. And humans are built to be omnivores. I eat lamb or beef less than once a week so have no guilt from an environmental view.
We eat veggie probably twice a week.
We have a healthy balanced diet with lots of local & homegrown veg. Most food is prepared at home. I don’t do ready meals unless you count fishfingers.
I’m a single mum and I work full time. I am busy but happy with my diet choices for my family.

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:14

@toolazytothinkofausername you should try the Helmans vegan mayo, taste exactly the same as their normal one! Quite expensive though

Bluesmartiesarebest · 22/12/2018 18:14

I suspect many vegans will discover that they have osteoporosis or other serious health problems in the future. I know that vegans will argue with me but it really isn’t a healthy diet compared to being vegetarian.

Ethel36 · 22/12/2018 18:15

I wish I was vegan. So much kinder to our planet. I tried veganuary challenge back in January. As a family we only lasted two weeks. It was such a drastic change and everything tasted gross. We eat more vegetarian dinners now, so only eat meat twice a week. Fair play to the vegans.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:15

hogglesball

And diet is probably the reason

Honestly, your description of the death of pigs is ridiculous. Do you watch David Attenborough and get so cross about a lion slaughtering a gazelle?

We are hunters and need to eat meat and for the most part in the UK, we kill our animals in an ethical way.

Knittink · 22/12/2018 18:16

I could go vegetarian pretty easily if I wanted to, but it would be a nightmare with the dc. They do like quite a lot of veg, but only ever raw or cooked plainly as a side dish, not cooked in interesting ways as a main course.
Vegan would be so much harder though, because I love cheese.

mydogisthebest · 22/12/2018 18:16

Me and DH have been vegetarian for over 30 years. I never liked meat. Didn't really like the taste and didn't like the way eating meat made me feel. It made me feel bloated, sick and tired.

I can't stand milk so use oat milk. Fine in tea and coffee (lots of people can't even tell the difference), fine for making sauces, Yorkshire pudding etc. Yoghurt and cream give me catarrh and sinus problems so use soya substitutes. Rarely eat ice cream but think vegan ice cream is as nice if not nicer.

Not keen on cheese at all so rarely eat any. Eggs are the one thing I find impossible to give up as I eat probably 7 or so a week. I do get them from a neighbour though whose chickens have the run of her large garden.

I don't care whether people are vegan or not but to state that vegan food is shit or that you are not vegan because you like food is silly and rude. I love food and I also love cooking.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:17

hogglesball

Our brains didn’t grow because of starches. Over consumption of starches is very problematic for our brains. Type 3 diabetes? That’s Dementia. Caused by excessive carbohydrate consumption

BatsAreCool · 22/12/2018 18:18

Because I enjoy eating meat and have no issues continuing to do so.
