To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Because I love meat... I have been tempted in the past when I was becoming more interested about nutrition and how bad eating animals are for the planet, but I can't be doing with bland vegan food! I much prefer cooking recipes using meat/mince. I must be a horrible woman because it clearly doesn't bother me that much about the environment or animal kindness Blush

easyandy101 · 22/12/2018 17:04

Cos I like eating animals

SoyDora · 22/12/2018 17:04

Because I like meat, cheese and eggs.

nocoolnamesleft · 22/12/2018 17:04

I love food too much. I am reminded of a comment by one of my friends many years ago: "I love vegan food. It goes so well with steak"

Zintox · 22/12/2018 17:04

I went vegan two years ago. Before that I ate everything. But despite loving meat once I found out about the cruelty in the dairy, egg, and meat industries I couldn’t in all conscience continue. I’ve never regretted my decision. There’s loads of vegan food in supermarkets and restaurants now and it’s so easy.

Oh yes, I LOVE cheese and milk! I've tried alternative dairy and lactose free milk but they are disgusting in tea and coffee Envy

easyandy101 · 22/12/2018 17:05

There really is nothing inherently bland or crap about vegan food

That's just called not being able to cook

TheFifthKey · 22/12/2018 17:05

I could live without meat but not dairy - it’s far too restricting to me. And the crazy lengths people to go to get around the restrictions of being vegan just seem absurd when you remember it’s just a choice they’ve made.

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 17:05

butchyrestingface I’m not remotely religious but also wonder about being called into account Blush

Because I don't want to be.

MaggieAndHopey · 22/12/2018 17:06

Because I'm lazy. It would be a much easier process if I didn't like eating animals. Some people are constitutionally repulsed by eating flesh, but sadly that's never been me. I've flitted about between being vegetarian, pescetarian, omnivore, and back to vegetarian again. I hope one day I'll have the balls to go full vegan, but that day is not today.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 17:06

Because I am a human

And humans are designed to eat meat

SmilingGivesYouWrinkles · 22/12/2018 17:07

Personally, because I am lazy, greedy, unimaginative and quite selfish.

Dd was vegan for over a year (now strict veggie) and I catered for her, but it was hard. mostly because cooking nice vegan meals is so time consuming.

PeroniZuchini · 22/12/2018 17:07

Fillet Steak
Bacon
Eggs Benedict
Cheese Toasties
Roast chicken
Pulled pork
Lamb tagine
Char siu buns
Boiled eggs and soldiers

I don't want to be. I'm not tempted by any sort of statement lifestyle.

Butchyrestingface · 22/12/2018 17:09

Neither am I, luckily enough. Grin. But I'm aware that by eating meat, I'm doing something that I believe to be morally wrong. That does bother me, especially when I watch the footage of baby chicks being thrown into the shredding machines and calves torn from their mothers.

Realistically speaking, I don't think I will ever have the willpower to give up meat wholesale. I can't imagine going into a restaurant and foregoing steak for a plate of veg or pasta. Reducing meat consumption to once a week is about as good as I'm going to get, I fear.

Unless I marry a veggie/vegan, who assumes responsibility for all the food preparation.

SinisterBumFacedCat · 22/12/2018 17:09

Nut allergy.

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 17:10

That’s an interesting side too sarahj I hadn’t thought of that side of things

Because cheese.
Also milk and butter and the fresh eggs from my (spoilt brat) hens.

I eat fish a couple of times a week and have a bit of meat occasionally. I currently have 8 different cheeses in my fridge, I would rather have cheese anything.

CatnissEverdene · 22/12/2018 17:10

I've been vegetarian for many years, and have tried Vegan but found it way too restrictive, especially eating out. I can't drink cows milk as it makes me feel ill but can tolerate small amounts of cheese every so often and I love it. Vegan cheese is just offensive, I take my hat off to anyone that can smell and eat it without vomiting.

Stickerrocks · 22/12/2018 17:11

I can't eat several types of fruit and vegetables for medical reasons and I also need to eat a certain amount of calcium in my diet. More importantly though, I wouldn't want to avoid cheese, fish and meat. I love eating a good roast dinner each week and no jackfruit or mushroom would ever taste as good.

I'm still laughing at Katherine Jenkins announcing that she is a pescetarian-vegan 3 weeks ago in a Guardian interview.

Sitranced · 22/12/2018 17:11

Because I have the choice not to be a vegan.

Stephisaur · 22/12/2018 17:11

I’m far too fussy. I don’t eat many vegetables so I don’t feel like a vegetarian/vegan lifestyle would provide me with a particularly balanced diet.

I try to have a veggie/vegan meal relatively often, but I couldn’t do it long term.
