To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

  1. I like meat.
  1. I like dairy.
  1. I have an allergy to nuts.
  1. I have oral allergy syndrome so can't eat most fruits or raw veg.
mydogisthebest · 22/12/2018 18:19

Humans do not need to eat meat. People may like eating meat but most certainly do not need to.

gamerwidow · 22/12/2018 18:19

I'm mainly not vegetarian because DH doesn't eat any veg other than potatoes and peas and hates meat substitutes and I'm not buying two lots of food for meals.
I could never be vegan because although I could give up meat I couldn't give up cheese.
I am trying to increase the number of meat free meals we have each week and buy higher welfare meat to offset the damage. I also choose vegetarian meals if I eat out.

chocolatepluswine · 22/12/2018 18:19

... and honestly also because I just can't afford a lot of the substitute products. Too expensive on what I have on a single, basic income

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:20

If we don’t need to eat meat, why do vegans need to take supplements?!?

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:21

No I don't, they do it for survival and they don't have moral agency.

It has been known for years that cooking starches was the probable calorie boost that made brains grow:

In terms of saving the planet, an entirely seasonal, locally produced diet is best.

Britons were at their healthiest in WW2, and just afterwards. Less sugar, more vegetables, nearly all grown locally. Lots of exercise, some meat but supplemented with eggs from hens you kept yourself. Limited dairy.

Yes, we are evolved to eat meat but not necessarily every day. I've started using a local butcher, who can tell me exactly which farm my meat cones from. I get eggs from a local farmer en route to work. Buy fruit and vegetables at the local market on Saturday if I can.

We need to think local and seasonal. Not only will it support local businesses, it's better for the planet it terms of food miles and the impact in LICs around the world.

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:22

B12 isn't to do with meat, it's from dirt and dirty water.

stopgap · 22/12/2018 18:23

Because I’m autoimmune and have the heaviest periods ever, so already have problems with iron and trace minerals absorption, even though I supplement and regularly eat red meat. It would not be a healthy diet for me at all.

I do enjoy vegan food and eat vegan meals several times a week.

starzig · 22/12/2018 18:23

Love my dairy.

CallMeRachel · 22/12/2018 18:23

I'm not vegan but I would like to be.

Unfortunately I am an all or nothing type of person and don't see how I could genuinely manage it 100% given my current circumstances.

For me it would mean, coats, shoes, bags make up, furniture, would have to change and I know I'd struggle with what to make/eat. I'm a compulsive comfort eater.

I do feel guilty about eating meat though and hate seeing the big double decker livestock trucks full of animals on way to be slaughtered 😢

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:24

@mooncuplanding I get my vitamin B12 that's usually found in meat, in my cereal and also using nutritional yeast

on the other hand, cholesterol is found only in red meat, butter, eggs, cream cheese ( meat and dairy products )

PurpleTigerLove · 22/12/2018 18:25

I’m not vegan because my husband is a farmer .

kateandme · 22/12/2018 18:25

anonymousss aaah yes there is that highly emotive language vegans love to use for guilt and shame.if done right the death is painless and not unkind.they don't lie there knowing they are bleeding to death or even know where they are going.why is this different to if they suddnely dropped dead in a field.they \re dead in an instant

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:26

What on Earth are you talking about hogglesball?

What a load of brain washed rubbish

Every part of our biology is designed to eat and digest meat.

It matters what we are designed to eat, despite morality. If you fed a cow meat it would get ill because it’s not designed to eat it. Why do you think humans are different?

Oblomov18 · 22/12/2018 18:26

My closest friend is recently vegan. Having been vegetarian before. My other closest friend is vegetarian.
I like meat and love cheese. I don't mind eating in vegan restaurants, which I now do a lot. I cook vegan for them.

But I wouldn't chose to be vegan myself.

Although I care, and have cut plastics, using beeswax food/bowl covers.

WhiteCat1704 · 22/12/2018 18:26

I'm vegetarian..Would go vegan but I would really struggle with giving up cheese..it's addictive...

starzig · 22/12/2018 18:26

Rachel. You are allowed to have a vegan diet without having a vegan lifestyle. Or you could always just not eat meat or dairy. Then you have the positives of the diet you want without the negative label.

GahWhatever · 22/12/2018 18:26

Our guts and teeth are designed for us to omnivorous. we don't have a caecum so eating a wholly plant based mainly cellulose diet won't give us the nutrients we need unless we go down convoluted processed food routes. seitan and tofu are processed foods. Plant milks are processed foods.
Although we eat meat or fish only a couple of days a week we do eat dairy every day. I could easily make a vegan dinner for my family every night mon-fri but the texture of meat would be missed by all of us by Saturday. Vegan food can be delicious but I'd struggle to make it nutritionally balanced without resorting to processed foods which I generally avoid.
Though I have to say my DC would choose mocha over regular ice creams every day of the week, so maybe it would be easier for them than me.

Etino · 22/12/2018 18:27

I’m not vegan. Everyone should be for moral reasons. I don’t find not eating or cooking without meat at all difficult, but I don’t think eating sustainable meat or eggs is problematic either. I do think the diary industry is incredibly ‘wrong’ and I also hate milk substitutes. So...
I eat lentils as much as possible. I cook an amazing vegan soupy stew and I’ve evangelised some dozen people who now eat it several times a week.
No milk or substitutes in hot drinks. No cheap cheese but posh cheese as a treat.
As much fruit and veg as possible.
It means I can’t say I’m a vegan or veggan or even a vegetarian: I’m no problem to feed when out but I’m impacting the planet less than if I ate thoughtlessly. It’s inadequate but it’s something...

eurochick · 22/12/2018 18:27

I was veggie for years. I developed dairy intolerance and went back to eating meat as I didn't want to be almost vegan.

I feel so much better since I went back to eating meat. I believe we are designed to be omnivores. I still eat veggie or vegan meals a lot and don't have a great deal of meat. I prefer the meat I do eat to be high welfare and I'm happy to eat less of it and pay more.

We were hunter gatherers for millennia before the agricultural revolution. Our bodies seem to be designed for meat and plant products. Grains are a relatively new introduction and less nutritious. Having tried it, I don't think a diet free of animal products but with lots of grains is the best thing for humans. Also, a lot of vegan foods come with a lot of air miles. A vegan diet based on what is available in Northern European winters would be pretty unsatisfying.

I originally stopped eating meat for animal welfare reasons and I'd still really like meat and dairy industry welfare standards to be improved.

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:28

Did you read my links before calling it 'brain washed rubbish'? @mooncuplanding

YankOnTheShelf · 22/12/2018 18:28

Repeat after me: "I am at the top of the food chain".

starzig · 22/12/2018 18:28

Go you, Etino
