To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Do Veganuary, see how you get on.
I stuck with it which I never thought would happen.

I'm.not the perfect vegan but nor am I a sanctimonious knob.

AllKinds · 22/12/2018 17:56

I tired going vegan, but it was so time consuming cooking separate meals for non-vegan DH and myself that I only lasted a month.

If I was single I'd easily go back to it.

Gilead · 22/12/2018 17:56

Can't do it due to IBD.

Veganforlife · 22/12/2018 17:58

I don't get why people feel they have to justify themselves ...no one ever went vegan because someone got their back up ...veganism is becoming more popular as people realise the reality of the meat/ dairy industry, plus there is so much vegan choice ...but pointless threads trying to make people feel guilty about their food choices won't encourage people to seek the facts .plus pushy vegans give the rest of us a bad name

BikeRunSki · 22/12/2018 17:58

Cheese

kateandme · 22/12/2018 17:59

Whereisthecoffee maybe then because of this could you not just do a blanket ban.rules.suddne impulse to follow new obsession.could you do more of a cut down or balance.so your not categorically saying no NEVER meat in products but want to work to cut it down or have a few days free.

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 17:59

@GummyGoddess there's loads of vegan bodybuilders. Look up a film called 'Gamechangers.' Kendrick Farris is vegan and he won gold for weighlifting in the last olympics. Lot of misinformation on this thread. Protein is in all food. There's nothing magical about animal products. Nitrogen comes from plants.

AlanaMay · 22/12/2018 17:59

I have been vegetarian for two decades - but actually probably about 80% vegan in that most of my main meals are that way due to other family members' preferences. I agree with the principle of veganism but I can't quite give up toast with real butter!
I also don't feel the need to label my diet as one thing or another... I've had 20 years of restricted diet (and associated problems with travelling / eating out) and I don't want to make life even more difficult for myself; I can eat vegan without being one and conveniently fall off the wagon when I need / want to.

WhyDontYouComeOnOver · 22/12/2018 17:59

Because I have a bowel condition and I'm restricted enough as it is. Plus, meat is delicious.

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:00

@Huntawaymama
I like meat and dairy and particularly cheese. I'm also a sheep farmer with high respect and care for animals. I also don't believe the world going vegan will save the planet. Oh and quorn and tofu taste awful

Just out of interest, do you send the sheep for slaughter? What is it you farm them for?

kateandme · 22/12/2018 18:00

Whereisthecoffee I meant not to a blanket ban

nicoala1 · 22/12/2018 18:01

Why would anyone just do Veganuary if not a committed vegan warrior who is going full on forever?

I don't get this.

OK, replace some items with vegan stuff, but to change overnight and for a month is useless IMO. Unless you have totally converted to the Vegan Religion, you will be gagging for a bit of non vegan food very soon.

Veganuary sounds like the Christian Lenten time to me. Forget it.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:01

If you already have mental health issues, it would be a really bad idea to go vegan

As above, the nutritional issues with a vegan diet do impact on brain function and there is evidence this also impacts mental health

We are not designed to just eat plants. A cow has multiple stomachs to be able to get the nutrients it needs from a plant based diet. Gorillas are herbivores and their digestive tract is designed for this, they also have to spend ALL day eating just to get the nutrients they need.

Everything about our bodies tells us we have evolved to eat meat, however uncomfortable that may be.

Rare steak and bacon sandwiches and cheese

kateandme · 22/12/2018 18:01

anonymousss she can still give them the greatest life possible and ove and nurture them even if they are sent for slaughter.
lots of farmer animals are like family and they treat them amazingly.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 22/12/2018 18:03

I like meat and dairy too much. I'd also only consider going vegan if I had a chef that could make lovely vegan food from scratch. To make vegan food good and varied takes a huge amount of time or you end up relying on processed crap.

cdtaylornats · 22/12/2018 18:03

It is a choice of where you decide to start eating things along a line of sentience, vegetarians and vegans choose not to eat anything further along the line than themselves.

popcornwizard · 22/12/2018 18:03

I'm not vegan because we're basically an animal that has evolved to eat meat.

I can't understand how some vegans/vegetarians think that it's somehow more ethical/morally superior to only eat plants, but not care how or where their plants are grown, and how far/how processed their food is.

I couldn't even be part of a 'local food' diet, even if one existed (which it should, as it's the best 'save the planet' diet), as I'd still want tea, coffee, chocolate and out of season fruit/veg.

pisspawpatrol · 22/12/2018 18:03

The p.p who said it's bollocks about the protein: for my diet I am allergic to mushrooms and quorn, Soya is not recommended because of the oestrogen components and as I said there are only so many times I can eat beans and pulses. Sometimes it's nice to just be able to eat a scrambled egg for a change.

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:04

@kateandme do you think it's possible to love something or have " high respect " for them or care for them if you are happy to send them to have their throats slit and to bleed to death?

namechangedforanon · 22/12/2018 18:05

I know it’s healthier . It isn’t going to save the planet .

I love the diet I have which includes high quality meat and dairy . I was veggie for 20 years and found it socially excluding . I am from a farmy area and have friends who shoot and cook delicious meals , get invited to asados etc . Just inconvenient .

FamilyOfAliens · 22/12/2018 18:06

And humans are designed to eat meat

Designed? Don’t you mean evolved?

MacarenaFerreiro · 22/12/2018 18:06

Because I like eating meat, eggs and dairy. I wouldn't find it hard to give up meat and fish, but eggs and dairy is a step too far.

It's too restrictive, too awkward when eating out, always having to be that "I'm a vegan, treat me differently" person when going round to friends houses or out for a meal. And to be brutally honest, I'm really not that bothered about chickens and how happy or not they are.

ModreB · 22/12/2018 18:06

Because humans are designed to be omnivores. Which means we need to eat non vegetable products to be healthy. I would prefer to get my non vegetable nutrients from locally sourced, known and trusted outlets rather than from designed so called nutritional supplements.

popcornwizard · 22/12/2018 18:06

Just out of interest, do you send the sheep for slaughter? What is it you farm them for?

Unless there's suddenly a fashion for eating them live, I fully expect that they're sent for slaughter. What exactly do you think a sheep farmer does?
