To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

a lot of the hill land used for sheep etc can't be used for growing crops the highlands of Scotland large parts of cumbria , the lake district and yorkshire dales are just not agricultural quality soil and the land is too steep to harvest crops

StylishMummy · 22/12/2018 17:27

I believe veganism is fashionable wank

I like meat and have no qualms in killing animals and eating them. Also love dairy and eggs

thecatneuterer · 22/12/2018 17:28

If everyone was vegan what do you think will happen to the animals? Farmers won’t keep animals just to look pretty in the fields

What a stupid, stupid argument. They wouldn't be bred of course. Far better not to be born than to be born to a short, horrible life and a nasty death.

I am vegan btw.

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 17:28

I think another reason for me is not wanting to cook different meals, d.p won’t go vegan and I wouldn’t have the dc vegan either it’s so much easier to cook one family meal.

There’s also the point mentioned earlier about the environmental and human impact of many vegan foods (quinoa, nuts etc.) I don’t know how to work out what is ok and what isn’t and how it all compares to dairy.

GreatestShowUnicorn · 22/12/2018 17:29

Because people don’t care about animals as much as they say they do and their taste buds win out!! Anyone interested watch these. The whole animals being well cared for is a farce they still get slaughtered the same way (have you ever heard pigs scream going for slaughter?) doesn’t matter how well raised they’ve been.

To ask why you aren’t vegan
Butchyrestingface · 22/12/2018 17:29

Zzzz people who say ‘because I don’t want to go to a restaurant and order a plate of vegetables’ are the worst type of people.

I said a plate of vegetables OR pasta.

Does that make me only the second worst type of people?

SirGawain · 22/12/2018 17:29

How is it good for the animals. They are bred for the food they provide, farmers do not keep them because they look cute in the field. If

Veganforlife · 22/12/2018 17:29

I think questions like this just gets people's backs up.no one has to justify what they eat..being vegan is a personal choice, bit like religion,in that its best not discussed.

Willow1992 · 22/12/2018 17:30

@Gin96 I am not vegan but can see the argument that would be morally better to let those species die out. They have been bred for food and not for their quality of life. For example, I have heard that chickens get problems with their legs because they have been grown to be too big.

Thebookswereherfriends · 22/12/2018 17:31

I’m not vegan because I can’t eat nuts and that seems to be a major component of a lot of vegan recipes and not easily replaced most of the time. Saying that, I do try to have several meat free days each week and I buy my meat ethically reared if possible.

ThereWillBeAdequateFood · 22/12/2018 17:31

I love cheese. Lots of the vegan replacements like almond milk seem to have been flown halfway around the world.

I am trying to reduce meat and diary but I’m being careful. Last time I went (semi) vegetarian it aggravated my IBS and I ended up anemic.

Troels · 22/12/2018 17:31

I like lots different veg and some fruits, and I also like milk, eggs, cheese, bacon, sausage, Roast Lamb, etc etc.
It's bad enough my diet is restricted by being Coeliac, a lot of the replacement stuff tastes like crap, I refuse to give up anymore.

ladymalfoy · 22/12/2018 17:32

Because my steak and kidney pie is awesome. And my mum’s fish pie is even better.

Mulberry72 · 22/12/2018 17:32

I like cheese, I like bacon.

I don’t like vegetables.

I couldn’t be vegan, or veggie.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 17:32

Isn’t it impossible to be vegan anyway?

Growing your lettuce in the garden....what do you do about the slugs?

Growing grain at the level needed to feed a population who are vegan, with no pesticides?

Never mind the fact it’s bad for you nutritionally, it is impossible for the morality to work out, unless of course we don’t count slugs and insects as morally relevant as cows.

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 17:32

I’m not asking anyone to morally justify what they eat I’m just curious. It’s something that I’ve struggled with trying to do and never quite succeeded fully at I eat meat at the moment so I’m definitely not trying to judge or berate any one.

ChubbyMummy12 · 22/12/2018 17:32

Bacon 🤤

BitchQueen90 · 22/12/2018 17:32

Because meat is tasty and I like eating it. I don't justify myself any further than that.

HollySwift · 22/12/2018 17:32

Bacon.

ChubbyMummy12 · 22/12/2018 17:32

And cheese😍

InionEile · 22/12/2018 17:33

I've thought about going vegan too because of the environmental impact and health benefits but I'm already coeliac so the hassle of eating vegan AND gluten-free would be too much. It's already a struggle to find good gluten-fee food.

I did read about a 'VB6' diet plan where you go vegan before 6pm every day, so breakfast and lunch are vegan and then you can eat whatever you like for dinner. That appeals to me as being more practical than vegan all the time and would at least have some health benefits.

randomsabreuse · 22/12/2018 17:33

Coz I'd rather eat locally reared good welfare meat than globally grown and imported plant substitutes

SirGawain · 22/12/2018 17:33

Pressed to soon.

If they had no commercial value they would largely disappear apart from a few kept fore nostalgic reasons by enthusiasts. Our green and pleasant land would be a very different place.

Mummyoftwo91 · 22/12/2018 17:33

I'm vegetarian, I wouldn't go vegan because I love cheese, I've tried vegan cheese but it's not the same other than that I eat vegan most of the time
