To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

I dont want to be.

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 22/12/2018 17:12

Chicken exists.

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 22/12/2018 17:12

I'm diabetic and am healthiest when eating a high fat, low carb diet. I would die younger on a vegan diet.

trojanpony · 22/12/2018 17:13

Because it’s incredibly restrictive a lot of the ready made and substitutes are full of crap.
Also good luck getting enough protein - it absolutely can be done on a vegan diet but you have to work a lot harder/plan meals carefully to get the right macros vs omnivore

Also
Cheese 🥰🥰🥰
Bacon 🥰🥰
Steak🥰
Eggs 😍😍😍

ratchethandler · 22/12/2018 17:13

Because I'm not keen on torturing myself.

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 17:13

I found out that some oranges aren’t considered vegan due to the wax used on the skin it really is quite difficult to avoid animal products completely

I've never wanted to become vegan. I enjoy meat a lot. I believe steak is the nicest meal I have.

LadyFidgetAndHerHandbag · 22/12/2018 17:14

Because all dairy alternatives are foul. And because I love cheese too much to give it up.

Ylvamoon · 22/12/2018 17:14

I just love food, all kinds of foods and that includes meat, veggy and (unbelievable) some vegan dishes.
I think a good variety of different foods is far more healthy than just sticking to one type. Just stay away from the processed stuff.

Els1e · 22/12/2018 17:14

I live in rural area which I love. If we didn’t eat meat and dairy, the farmers would go out of business and stop keeping animals. The land would be sold and built on. Total misery.

FuzzyCustard · 22/12/2018 17:14

I'm mostly pescetarian but I love cheese.

Lollypop27 · 22/12/2018 17:15

I’ve thought about it a lot. I’ve watched the documentaries and have felt physically sick. We have a few vegetarian meals a week but I like cheese. It’s pure selfishness and laziness I don’t do it.

I do worry about the environmental impact but like a previous poster I get locally reared organic meat where there is no food miles. Surely the half a cow and half a lamb I buy a year from a farmer less than a mile away is not going to be more environmentally damaging than the nuts, quinoa, lentils etc flown half way across the world? Does anyone know if this is true?

Mondaytired · 22/12/2018 17:15

I like meat. That why I’m not vegan. Can’t beat a steak yummmmmmm

Babdoc · 22/12/2018 17:15

Because I’m human and we are omnivorous. Our teeth and gut are adapted for an omnivorous, not herbivorous, diet. Veganism means having to take supplements or monitor your diet carefully to achieve the vitamin and mineral intake that is automatic on a mixed diet.
Veganism means having to eat excess protein to achieve the balance of amino acids that is already optimal in meat and animal sources. Iron from meat is more easily absorbed by the gut than plant based iron.
Free range prey animals such as deer need culled regularly to protect their habitat, as they have no predators in modern Britain. If you have to kill them, why not eat them?
Marginal upland hill farms, peat bogs and mountains can’t be used for growing veg. What’s wrong with farming them for sheep, goats, pheasant or deer?
Finally, yes, I love the taste of neat and cheese!

Butchyrestingface · 22/12/2018 17:15

What about the use of bees to cultivate certain crops, involving transportation of the poor wee bees hundreds/thousands of miles away from their homes? Xmas Sad

juneau · 22/12/2018 17:16

Because I like eating an omnivorous diet.
Because I can only imagine how much whining I'd have to put up with from my DC if I forced a vegan diet on them.
Because I'd have to learn to cook all over again.
Because we love cheese and eggs, ham and bacon, turkey and sausages ...

Confusedbeetle · 22/12/2018 17:16

The moral issue is not enough to compromise my nutrition. There is a growing concern about the nutritional balance for vegans in particular pregnant women and children. Besides I like meat and dairy

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/12/2018 17:16

Cheese
Bacon
Burgers
Sausages
Chicken
Lasagne
Eggs
Cream
Milk
Cake

RebeccaCloud9 · 22/12/2018 17:17

Pretty much the same reasons why I can't stay thin 😫😫

AngelontopoftheTree · 22/12/2018 17:17

I believe that humans are omnivores for a reason.

GummyGoddess · 22/12/2018 17:17

It doesn't contain all nutrients, the replacements are full of artificial crap, not enough protein, if there was a food or vitamin shortage they would starve and become malnourished.

Also very few vegan bodybuilders, barely any vegetarian ones either as the lack of protein is a problem. That's my hobby and I have no intention of making it harder than it already is.

Userplusnumbers · 22/12/2018 17:17

@Whereisthecoffee - it's because I like meat and dairy too much. I worry about sustainability though.

I recently tried an 'impossible burger' in the states though, its completely plant based, but I couldn't tell the difference - I think over the next few years it will be a lot easier for people like me who miss the flavours too much.

I've found even trying to make simple substitutions a minefield - for instance, I was using almond milk for a while, but I now can't do it after reading it takes 1600 litres of water for every litre of almond milk - hardly sustainable.

So, I would like to, but I'm lzy and weak willed basically.

Samcro · 22/12/2018 17:17

I like meat and am not keen on vegetables

IwantedtobeEmmaPeel · 22/12/2018 17:18

Because:
Bloody steaks
steak hache
cheese fondue
runny ripe camambert
double cream
bacon
chorizo
steak and kidney suet pudding
eggs

Sorry, I have to go now as my stomach is rumbling.

pfwow · 22/12/2018 17:18

YABU because I think it comes down to personal preference, and mine are none of anyone's business, but, I guess it comes down to some vegans being so preachy that would never want to be associated with that.
