To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

I like meat, fish, dairy & eggs too much is I suppose the honest answer

I am happy to cut down on all of the above and am definitely more aware of the environmental impact of meat eating than I previously was but don't wish to give them up entirely

LivininaBox · 22/12/2018 17:19

I cook slot of vegan meals, but I don't think a vegan diet is that great for the environment as it is so reliant on food imported from hotter countries, i.e. Soya, coconut, nuts.

It is extremely restrictive when eating out or visiting friends, and I am not keen on the texture of done vegan foods. Nothing is creamy like dairy stuff.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 22/12/2018 17:19

I would be if I had a live in chef.

Badtasteflump · 22/12/2018 17:19

Seems a bit of an obvious question - ie I’m not a vegan because I like non-vegan food too much to give it up.

I don’t eat meat but I love cheese and fish/seafood, as in really, really love....

GummyGoddess · 22/12/2018 17:19

Oh yes, also when my periods are back, they will be extremely heavy and I need iron to stop becoming anaemic. I need meat or I will become ill, supplements are not effective for me.

Lovemusic33 · 22/12/2018 17:20

Because I like I lovely rare stake occasionally? Because we were made to eat meat as well as veg? Because I don’t want to be a vegan?

Santababyclaus · 22/12/2018 17:21

I like meat and cheese. But I also agree with @Sarahjconnor, this is something which is often glossed over by one of my vegan friends and results in her going into extreme detail of animal cruelty to deflect my human impact argument.

megletthesecond · 22/12/2018 17:21

yy awful when my stomach is really bad and I must eat to keep going is when I lapse and eat bacon and eggs. Sadly it's enough to sustain me for a long time while my stomach calms down. (I'd be skeletal quickly on Atkins, animal protein fills me up).

Idontbelieveinthemoon · 22/12/2018 17:21

I try not to eat meat more than once a week, and am dairy-free, but whole-hog-vegan is just too extreme for me and I couldn't do it.

When I do eat meat, I enjoy it, but I also love veggies, pasta, rice and vegetarian food. What I don't enjoy are those bullshit 'pretend' meats, they're nonsense and made from sadness.

HolgerLowCarbingLoser · 22/12/2018 17:21

Because I don’t want to be.

Ilikeknitting · 22/12/2018 17:22

I’m not vegan because I like cheese.
My husband is vegetarian, so I rarely eat meat.

I use butter and cream in recipes.

Willow1992 · 22/12/2018 17:22

I agree with it morally, I'm just a bit apathetic about how much impact one person changing their diet would have vs. how much of a challenge it would be for me to give up meat and dairy because I really like them and depend on them for most of my meals. I did try it once and also found it a bit socially difficult in eating out/at other people's houses situations.

AndhowcouldIeverrefuse · 22/12/2018 17:22

I believe in having a varied diet. An exclusively vegetable-based diet is too restrictive for me.

I love fish, dairy, meat and eggs.

I try to avoid processed products and find meat substitutes incomprehensible.

I also have a nut allergy.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 22/12/2018 17:22

Because I hate anything beanie as it gives me really bad wind, and too much carbohydrate blows me up too. Vegan diets seem to be heavy on both.

My ideal meal is meat or fish with vegetables.

I could happily do without dairy, but not meat or fish or eggs.

MamaDane · 22/12/2018 17:22

I'd love to be a vegan and perhaps one day I'll give it a try.

I went vegetarian for a year and it was rather annoying how everyone had to be consider of me. I was also teased for it. Not that it bothered me much but I did feel like a 'problem' .

I do love cheese and milk products in general and would have difficulty stopping. Xmas Blush

If the eggs were from my dad's chickens I wouldn't have an issue eating/using eggs and wouldn't be completely vegan.

I don't know. Maybe in the future

Gin96 · 22/12/2018 17:23

If everyone was vegan what do you think will happen to the animals? Farmers won’t keep animals just to look pretty in the fields.

mimibunz · 22/12/2018 17:23

I’ve given up pork, which hasn’t been difficult but it’s made me realise how many recipes call for it. But yeah, I like cheese. And ice cream.

ladybee28 · 22/12/2018 17:24

I never fully labelled my diet as 'vegan', but I ate and consumed very little in terms of animal products for a long time.

I've now recently been diagnosed as gluten, lactose and fructose intolerant, and if I continued with a vegan-esque diet I just wouldn't have anywhere near a balanced diet.

I try to eat ethically-sourced wherever I can (and when budget allows), but it doesn't sit very comfortably with me still.

SpikedTea · 22/12/2018 17:24

I was vegan 2 years and now just veggie. I don't eat or use anything that has animal product in it. I watched this and went vegan over night! maybe I need to watch it again.

OopsInamechangedagain · 22/12/2018 17:25

Butter. Nothing else comes close.

Userplusnumbers · 22/12/2018 17:25

If everyone was vegan what do you think will happen to the animals? Farmers won’t keep animals just to look pretty in the fields.

Well there'd be less animals wouldn't there? As humans wouldn't keep breeding them to artificially inflate their numbers to eat Hmm

Doyouavocado · 22/12/2018 17:25

Zzzz people who say ‘because I don’t want to go to a restaurant and order a plate of vegetables’ are the worst type of people.

TheBreastmilksOnMe · 22/12/2018 17:25

I’m not vegan because:

I am allergic to nuts and I am coeliac so struggle to find food that fits my diet hard enough without further restrictions
I think it would be expensive (happy to be proved wrong)
I suffer with anaemia and B vit deficiencies.
It feels a bit extreme to me, I would give vegetarianism a chance though.

NoraLuka · 22/12/2018 17:26

I’ve just worked out that I’ve been vegetarian for nearly 25 years 😱. I could never go back to eating meat as I just don’t like it. Would like to be vegan but it would be too complicated as I have the DC to cook for too. I think I’ll try being vegan once they’ve left home.

MyNewBearTotoro · 22/12/2018 17:26

Convenience. Money. Taste.

Being vegan is hard work, I struggle to find the time or energy to cook food 100% from scratch every day and rely on ready meals and food I can bung in the oven straight from the freezer. Vegan ready-meal options are considerably more expensive and less available than vegetarian or meat versions, eg: the Tesco Wicked Kitchen range is very expensive and not available in my local store anyway.

Dairy-free options for things like milk, cheese, cakes, biscuits etc are either unavailable in my local area or taste horrendous/ have an awful texture. I would have to hugely change the foods I eat to be vegan and wouldnt be able to enjoy the treats like donuts, chocolate etc I like. I also wouldn’t be able to eat out (most places don’t have a vegan option or if they do it’s conpleyely unappetising and seems to defeat the purpose of treating myself to a night out) or eat with friends as they wouldn’t cater for it.

I was vegetarian for over 10 years but haven’t been for the last few years (now I tend to eat meat once or twice a week) and I have eaten some delicious vegan food in restaurants in central London etc, but right now it just feels too difficult as a dietary choice unless people either have a lot of time to cook/ bake from scratch or a lot of money to spend on foods. It seems to be becoming more mainstream though and if it’s not just a trend and vegan food continues to grow in popularity and availability I can see myself potentially becoming vegan in the future.
