To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Plants are sentient. They sense light and can communicate with other plants using chemicals. They can even warn other plants of when they are being attacked (nibbled on by tasty rabbits)

So basically vegans are murdering bastards as well. They just eat things that react differently to how animals react and have different "emotions" than animals. (Plus veg and fruit aren't fluffy and cute looking so who cares eh?)

SAVE THE CARROTS!!! DOWN WITH JUICING!!!

BatsAreCool · 24/12/2018 14:12

Their blood pressures rise. Adrenaline courses through their bodies. You are eating high blood pressure, stress and adrenaline. You are eating fear, grief and rage. You are eating suffering, horror and murder. You are eating cruelty. You are what you eat.

Do you honestly think that ever makes a meat eater go 'you know what you are right and I will turn vegan straight away'?

Honestly that kind of stuff is most likely to be met by someone tucking into a nice veal steak next to you just to piss you off.

By all means use facts and your own experience as an argument but if you come out with drivel like that don't expect anyone to take it seriously.

Avegemitesandwich · 24/12/2018 14:13

patsyanna do you believe that it is inherently wrong to eat animals or animal products because they are equal to us, or is it OK if you live in a place/society where people just wouldn't survive without consuming animals, in which case you don't believe animals are equal to us?

Veganism is only taking off in the Western world because we can afford the abudnace of food (often driving up the price of that food for local people and causing all sorts of issues) which means we can survive easily on a totally vegan diet.

Patsyanna · 24/12/2018 14:13

Seem to have touched a nerve here and there.... Actually there are people starving in other countries because their governments sell their grain to us to feed animals, completely immoral! Btw plants don't have a central nervous system.

BatsAreCool · 24/12/2018 14:16

Seem to have touched a nerve here and there....

Not here but I would ignore you at a dinner party as I would find more exciting people to have discussions with.

Bettyspants · 24/12/2018 14:17

I love meat fish and dairy. I feel no guilt in having free range meat or home shot game . Can afford to source responsibly and quite happy with our choices. Can't stand the warriors trying to installguilt by stating animals shouldn't die for us, there's so many more issues in the world I'm interested in -animal welfare being one!!

Neverunderfed · 24/12/2018 14:18

😂

Avegemitesandwich · 24/12/2018 14:18

Seem to have touched a nerve here and there....

You wish!

What about Inuit people, who pretty much only eat meat and simply wouldn't survive on a vegetarian/vegan diet, nothing to do with their governments selling grain? Are they 'eating fear, murder, cruelty' with every meal? Is eating animals inherently wrong in itself?

totallycluelessoverhere · 24/12/2018 14:22

Seem to have touched a nerve here and there....
Not for me. I just think you sound like you’re trying to justify yourself. I like eating animals and all the propaganda and extreme scare tactics won’t make me stop. Enjoy your broccoli and sprouts.

ChoudeBruxelles · 24/12/2018 14:27

Patsyanna not killing someone. Killing an animal.

hobnobsaremyfavourite · 24/12/2018 14:28

Ah patsyanna
The type of poster that makes me trough as much animal products as I can get my hands on
And most delicious they are too

Patsyanna · 24/12/2018 14:34

An animal is "someone " we are all sentient beings with the capacity to experience pain, joy, fear etc.

SoyDora · 24/12/2018 14:38

You are eating high blood pressure, stress and adrenaline. You are eating fear, grief and rage. You are eating suffering, horror and murder. You are eating cruelty. You are what you eat

No. I’m eating roast beef. Protein, iron...

ChoudeBruxelles · 24/12/2018 14:40

Patsyanna by English definitions. Someone is a pronoun meaning some person. Not some animal.

You’re not going to convince people to be vegan by being sanctimonious and emotional. I choose to eat meat and dairy. I wear leather. That’s my choice. You don’t that’s fine but don’t tell me I’m wrong. I’m not. You’re not. It’s just a different choice.

WalnutToast · 24/12/2018 14:41

Isn't it amazing that we're supposed to worry about changing our behaviour, while the environmental "campaigners" fly around the world, visiting only the most agreeable places.

The climate change meeting was in Poland. I'm not sure Poland in December - with all night meetings because they were trying so hard to find an agreement - is that amazing a destination. Many of the delegates were in tears apparently.

We've all seen the 'studies' that 'prove' it....curiously everyone forgets that academics have to fight for funding and who's going to pay for that?

So you're just going to dismiss all academic research because it doesn't suit your personal preferences?

I'm not a vegan but I don't think there's any doubt that those who are are doing the planet a big favour. Livestock farming takes more carbon, more land, it's bad for biodiversity and it's not sustainable given the current world population, the fact the population is increasing, and the trend towards eating more meat globally as people in developing countries grow richer.

Leonard1 · 24/12/2018 15:07

Vegan food requires more effort and cooking skills. I can see it is poss to cook amazing meals but it’s not cheap. One of my pleasures in life is food which includes meat and fish. I appreciate others want to eat differently but that’s my choice. I think that I remain unconvinced about the long term harm a vegan diet could have on you. Not nec as healthy as portrayed on Instagram in colourful photos. I like the middle path a little of everything.

lemonface · 24/12/2018 15:12

And out come the vegan bullies

Patsyanna · 24/12/2018 15:27

The animals are the ones being bullied and because they can't speak up for themselves I will do it for them. Just as I would for anyone I felt was treated unfairly, animal or human.

MIdgebabe · 24/12/2018 15:37

SO just because it has a central nervous system you won’t eat meat but will eat carrots because they are sufficiently different to you? Even though they do have feelings?

Small insects die if you crash into them with your car, so I suppose you walk everywhere too?

And you will nevert eat grain because harvesting it removes food from another animal?

That attitude is not tenable. So we have to each make our own lines about what is and isn’t acceptable. Some of us change those lines when different facts come to light, such as the climate impact of beef and dairy but a sanctimonious rant is very off putting

lemonface · 24/12/2018 15:51

I meant the people who bully the vegans

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 15:56

@Patsyanna ODFOD.

Don't choke on your festive fucking Christmas quinoa-beetroot surprise.

BadLad · 24/12/2018 15:56

The type of poster that makes me trough as much animal products as I can get my hands on

Smile Same here. There's an all-you-can-eat Brazilian barbeque restaurant near where I live, and it does glorious beef.

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 15:58

@lemonface self-righteous judgmental twats deserve to have a comment or two thrown their way. It is not bullying. I bet most vegans have only recently become vegan as well. It's no secret where meat comes from. It never has been.

It's akin to a smoker smoking for 20 years, giving up and condemning everyone who still smokes and didn't stop when they did.

It's bollocks.

OlderThanAverageforMN · 24/12/2018 16:04

An animal is "someone " we are all sentient beings with the capacity to experience pain, joy, fear etc

They may well be able to feel pain, joy, fear etc, but not in the same way as humans. They are not "someone", they are them. You do not know how a cow feels any more than it knows what you feel because you are not a cow and it is not a human. Stop with the anthropomorphisation of animals.

lemonface · 24/12/2018 16:06

But you just claimed that you do know how they feel and in the same paragraph that I dont know Hmm
