To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

They may feel Means I don't know. Neither do you.

Neverunderfed · 24/12/2018 16:09

Hasn't it been shown that animals don't have a sense of self? As such they might feel pain, but can't feel sorry for themselves etc

wonkylegs · 24/12/2018 16:10

I like meat, cheese, eggs etc
I don't believe that it is the 'cure' for the problem it's touted to be
I believe a proper balanced diet with a focus on reducing food waste and a more balanced relationship with food would be a better and more realistic and properly sustainable step for society.

Hofuckingho · 24/12/2018 16:13

I can do vegetarian but I don't seem to be able to do without eggs and cheese.

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 16:18

If anyone is going to become vegan it's going to be by their own choice and not by shitty vegan propaganda and judgement. That just makes people want to eat more meat. It goes against your cause.

FFS... I'm in the UK, that crappy rap song has no truth in it.

Please do some research on drugs permitted for use in the USA on animals in the food chain and those permitted for use in the UK and EU..... why do you think we don't permit USA meat products to be imported into the UK and EU? err... because they use products that are banned in the UK and EU. belms

Badcat666 · 24/12/2018 16:41

Again... Stop showing clips that have nothing to do with meat reared and grown in the EU and UK.

RrreCansada · 24/12/2018 16:46

But it's still happening. Here, there wherever.

Also... if it's all about a central nervous system then why don't vegans tuck into an oyster or two? Oysters don't have a central nervous system... or mussels.. both delicious!

SAVE OUR CELERY!! MUNG BEANS IS MURDER!!

Neverunderfed · 24/12/2018 17:13

Right, that's done it, someone has shown me a video clip of a catchy tune, I'm converted.

😂🤦

How eating meat can regenerate the environment (11 min youtube video)

Caveat... if, and only if it's grassfed. If it's grain fed, it's full of hormones, antibiotics, pesticides, a terrible omega 3/6 ratio, lacking in nutrients. Ecologically it leads to manure lakes, pollution, terrible cruelty on feedlots, intensification that destroys family farms.

Meat isn't bad per se; the plant = good : animal = bad dichotomy in veganism is a false consciousness. It's about eating food which supports the soil vs food which destroys the soil. And eating grains (either humans directly or their livestock) very much destroys the soil. Monocultures are an ecological gaping wound onto which we have to keep pouring pesticides, fossil fuel fertilisers, insecticides (how vegan is that??) and all sorts of artificial inputs. It is an artificial linear model of food production that is on a trajectory towards draw down of resources, desertification and dustbowls and peak carbon/phosphorus/nitrogen. Whereas mixed pasture based agriculture is closed loop and endlessly self sustaining (bar the constant input of the sun), also allows a rich habitat for wildlife.

Look up visionary farmers like Isabella Tree and Joel Salatin.

Whereisthecoffee · 24/12/2018 19:02

Vegans , what are you having for your Christmas dinner tomorrow ? Bonus points if it isn’t nut roast as when I was veggie that was the standard

'Animal agriculture is big business'

It's actually very split, from global companies like smithfield to mr crawshaw up the fells. But people talk like they have something in common, or a consensus.

Meanwhile, the business i'm talking about are the ancilliary ones like mobsanto which actually have a bob or two, and food businesses like supermarkets, which are credited with suddenly growing a consciencd and selling us plant based because they care so deeply about the environment. Personallt, i think its got more to do with enjoying the high mark-upon plant based food, being able to exploit the 'green' stuff us pesky consumers like thesedays, NOT having to deal with that pesky animal welfare or doing business with hoardes of pesky littleguys like mr crawshaw.

OnlineAlienator · 24/12/2018 19:04

Mobsanto, it was a typo, but a good one Grin

OnlineAlienator · 24/12/2018 19:08

@missymoooo those thousands of people are a modern phenomenon, who only find veganism sustainable due to the availability of the fossil fuels largescale crop production, global transport and labgrown supplements depend on. Take that prop away, ie look in time periods or places without them, and you suddenly dont find vegans anymore.

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/12/2018 19:12

I am having a curry

Whereisthecoffee · 24/12/2018 19:13

Sounds good Whereisthecoffee, not sure what I'm doing yet, maybe a big pie of some sort, defo not nut roast though! 😀

NameChanger22 · 24/12/2018 19:41

I'm having a mushroom tart with all the trimmings. I've never had a nut loaf in 34 years of being a vegetarian (now vegan). How did that happen?

hibbledibble · 24/12/2018 19:47

Christmas meal is usually a vegetable timbale, mushroom Wellington, nut roast (classic but very tasty), Quorn, and loads of veg and potatoes. No need to have dead animals to have a tasty meal.

MattMagnolia · 24/12/2018 20:01

I don’t eat meat or fish and it’s illogical to be vegetarian but not vegan. Beef cattle have a far better life than dairy cows. Battery hens have a terrible life. So I don’t want to consume butter or eggs but vegan food is horrible and I love cheese.

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 20:04

"dead animals"

Are you somehow incapable of saying meat?
