To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

Oliversmumsarmy vegan diets don’t make you tall. My 12 year old ds is 5’10”. He eats meat.

ginghamstarfish · 24/12/2018 12:51

There's no doubt that most of us would benefit from eating less meat and dairy etc, and more plant-based food, but veganism is seen as difficult and too restrictive. I agree with PPs that it's better and more achievable for most of us to eat local fresh food, stop seeing meat as the main part of every meal, and stop buying unseasonal products which are flown halfway round the world. We don't NEED those things, there's always something in season. Also get annoyed at vegan/vegetarians who seem to think that if we all followed suit, the fields would be full of happy lambs and cows - they wouldn't exist, so no life at all as opposed to a short life being being killed for meat.

RrreCansada · 24/12/2018 12:59

I would rather animals were not born to only be eaten. Most are in barns and cages anyway. We all know that meat has contained many super bugs,CJD etc.

I have never heard one good excuse that would justify these animals dying.

Normalnorman · 24/12/2018 13:01

OP I think you have answered your question. You were vegetarian for several years but still keep coming back to meat which to me says you're not ready to give it up.

A vegan lifestyle takes serious commitment and is pretty hard going unless you're 100% dedicated to a complete change in not just what you eat.

You could try again with a vegetarian diet or if you're still struggling and want meat maybe just take greater care and buy / eat produce from higher welfare farming produce.

lemonface · 24/12/2018 13:11

It is not hard at all if you find eating dead animals disgusting and repulsive.
To all those who on go on and on about not getting the right vitamins etc and getting ill testing a plant based diet. Hospitals are full of overweight meat eaters with cancer and heart disease not vegans FFS

lemonface · 24/12/2018 13:12

Bloody autocorrect Hmm

Normalnorman · 24/12/2018 13:19

I'm sure it's not hard for people that find eating meat disgusting and repulsive but OP doesn't have that problem - it's the opposite in being difficult to go without meat in the long-term.

totallycluelessoverhere · 24/12/2018 13:19

Laughing at the idea that only non vegans can suffer heart disease. I used to work with a young woman who was vegan and ate chips every single lunchtime because going to the chippy was convenient. A vegan life doesn’t necessarily mean a fat free life.

AGHHHH · 24/12/2018 13:21

It is not hard at all if you find eating dead animals disgusting and repulsive.

Obviously most of the population doesn't have this problem. Confused

malificent7 · 24/12/2018 13:24

The founder of vegan macrobiotics Michio Kuchi has gad cancer twice. My ex knew him.He does extra healthy vegan, organic, wholegrain Japenese food.

malificent7 · 24/12/2018 13:25

Had cancer even...

NameChanger22 · 24/12/2018 13:26

The excuse that some people use for not becoming vegan is that they can't be 100% vegan. I doubt anyone is. They sneak animal products into everything. I still have some products that aren't vegan (makeup, clothing) because I don't want to throw perfectly good things out. I'm just not buying them anymore and I'm certainly not eating them. Nobody says you have to be perfect when you're vegan, just make some changes for the better and be more conscious of what you are consuming.

It is much better for our planet to a be vegan, that's the main reason I am one. Some people do care about this.

Guavaf1sh · 24/12/2018 13:28

Veganism is only open to those with enough money. Animals are tasty and there is no tasty alternative. That’s why

Avegemitesandwich · 24/12/2018 13:35

How privileged you are to be able to feel this way.

MsLexic · 24/12/2018 13:39

Being vegan is a great choice if you can manage it. I find though there are so many things I cannot eat due to tummy health problems, it may be something for others to choose. I eat very little meat and prefer vegetarian food with some fish .

Oliversmumsarmy · 24/12/2018 13:46

Avegemitesandwich

Pretty much all that I do. I might change the chilli powder for curry powder or herbs.

Dp is the cook.

Whilst a vegan diet might not have made my dd and ds tall if you go on what other mothers told me that my children would be short and stunted because I didn’t feed them steak or a Big Mac each day.

I think they have turned out very tall.

No one in either of our families can we think of going back generations was tall.

Tallest person in my family is my father at 5ft 6 and dp is the tallest in his family at under 6 ft.

No idea where it came from.

Patsyanna · 24/12/2018 13:53

Think of how you feel when you are angry, afraid, grief stricken. Bear in mind the physical feelings that accompany these emotions. These emotions, fear, grief and rage, produce chemical changes in our bodies. They do the same to animals. Their blood pressures rise. Adrenaline courses through their bodies. You are eating high blood pressure, stress and adrenaline. You are eating fear, grief and rage. You are eating suffering, horror and murder. You are eating cruelty. You are what you eat.
So when you sit down tomorrow to celebrate Christmas and wish each other a peaceful new year remember "Peace begins on you plate"

ChoudeBruxelles · 24/12/2018 13:58

Patsyanna it’s my choice whether to eat meat. I don’t however eat emotions. I’m friends with farmers. They have compassion for their animals but it is a business.

SneakyGremlinsBrokeTheSleigh · 24/12/2018 13:58

Oh my fucking christ Xmas Hmm

Poloshot · 24/12/2018 13:58

Because I like meat

Poloshot · 24/12/2018 14:00

And I'm not a self righteous weirdo

Said from a place of complete and utter first world privilege. And also, not going to convince anyone to become vegan. Well done, give yourself a pat on the back.

lauramaywharton · 24/12/2018 14:03

Because animals will be killed regardless. If we was all vegan you'd have to kill animals so you can have there land for vegan food, we also would no longer look after them or feed them or give them medical treatment or shelter as we wouldn't need them.

totallycluelessoverhere · 24/12/2018 14:04

Oh fuck off patsy. Go and enjoy your vegetables.

Patsyanna · 24/12/2018 14:07

If you could live your life without harming otheres why wouldn't you? There is no moral justification for killing someone who doesn't want to die. People can choose to eat meat because it isn't illegal to do so. Unfortunately the animals do not have the luxury of choice, their fate is in our hands.
