To ask why you aren’t vegan

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

I like meat, fish, and Dairy.
i think animals are for eating and lower down the food chain than us.
Vegan food tastes like shit and not sure it's that good for you.
Soya is carcinogenic too.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:29

cereal may ‘contain’ it but whether you metabolise it is a different matter

You are playing with millions of years of evolution by cutting out meat, but yeah go for it if it makes you feel morally superior.

I understand it’s not comfortable to compute that humans are predators, but we are. And very successful at it too.

To ask why you aren’t vegan
anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:30

@kateandme if done right the death is painless and not unkind

Not unkind? What's kind about killing an animal?!

And what was the emotive language I used? Was it stating factually a part of how they are killed, is that too emotive for you?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 22/12/2018 18:31

Because roast chicken.

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:32

Millions of years, which ones? The millions in tropical forests? We moved onto the savannah due to climate change and had to eat to survive, whatever we could get to pass our genes on, that doesn't mean it's our optimal diet.

shiveringtimber · 22/12/2018 18:33

Because I'm violently allergic (anaphylaxis) to most legumes (peanuts, peas, chickpeas). Lentils and tofu also cause an allergic reaction, but not as deadly.

SunnyCoco · 22/12/2018 18:33

I like cheese and eggs and seafood

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:34

If it's a kind death take your dog or cat into the slaughterhouse when you need them putting down. If you won't, ask yourself why and what is different about the animals going in that you eat that also feel pain and suffer.

stopdropandroll · 22/12/2018 18:36

i’ve cut out eggs and never drank milk, but do sometimes have them as an ingredient. cheese has always been the thing holding me back but there’s so many more vegan options in supermarkets now i might finally fully commit. dh has been veggie for 25+ years and vegan since the summer, plus is an amazing cook so it should be pretty easy! living in london helps with eating out.

ShesAnEasyLlama · 22/12/2018 18:37

I'm disabled, work full time and am a single parent. Some days I only have the energy to shove preprepared food in the over. Cooking from scratch isn't an option on those days. I know some convenience food is vegan, but I have known vegans who were obese from living off those foods before learning to cook properly. Vegan doesjtvalwats equal healthier.

Of course, if a nice vegan chef wanted to move in and cook me yummy and healthy vegan food every day I would happily eat it all. I just know it's not always an option for me. I only eat meat or fish a couple of times per week and I'm dairy free because of allergies anyway.

kateandme · 22/12/2018 18:39

Hogglesballs don't talk to me about putting my pet down to bring in emotions.you don't have any idea what people/I might have been through of holding ur pet for the last moment before the injection goes in.so please don't!

Dimsumlosesum · 22/12/2018 18:41

I love cheese too much. And seafood.

JoHoHoanJettPack · 22/12/2018 18:43

I can't even be vegetarian. I have tried multiple times but I can't coexist with bacon.

tryinganewname · 22/12/2018 18:44

I'm veggie.. I can't give up cheese is the reason I'm not vegan, I would like to be though.

ischristmasoveryet · 22/12/2018 18:44

Because life is too short !

Badcat666 · 22/12/2018 18:46

Because bacon and roast beef and roast chicken... ARE DELICIOUS!!!!!

and the fact that the by products from animals produced for human and animal consumption keeps this world of ours going.

If you go vegan because you want to save the animals then it's time to go back to living in a building made from your own poo and straw (no using clay or mud because of the worms and insects in the ground!) by your own fair hands because your house is FILLED to the brim with products which contain or have been manufactured with the help of all the bits from animal we don't nom down on. Oh and medicines get made from them as well.. or tested using animal by products because we can't test on humans... so no using most modern medicines...oh! and no using biodiesel... or electricity...

I'd go on but my yummy homemade chicken, bacon and winter veg soup is getting cold.. :D

FuckBrussel · 22/12/2018 18:46

@MyBreadIsEggy - you're not far off, actually! Blush They've come a long way from the poor, scrawny, almost oven ready girls who arrived a few months ago. They have free range of our veg garden (although that's going to have to change when we start actually growing stuff again next Spring!), lots of treats, and a warm mash every morning while the weather is cold, and DH spent this afternoon installing a little space heater in the coop so they don't get too cold at night... But they do average almost an egg each every day.

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 18:48

@kateandme this is the second time you've mentioned your emotions and how it's too emotive for you.

The suffering of animals, including pets is too emotive for you but you're happy for animals to suffer so you can eat meat, why?

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:48

@kateandme Me too, it's horrible, sorry for your loss.

But the other animals face a very violent scary death, I've been there too. Was brought up on a small farm and have visited many slaughterhouses.

WilburforceRaven · 22/12/2018 18:48

Because I like meat, seafood, eggs, butter, cream.

Curlypop · 22/12/2018 18:49

Because I like bacon too much.

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 18:49

@badcat666 all of those are good points but it still doesn't mean we do the maxiumum damage to this planet and harm to other beings just because we can't eliminate everything.

JustDanceAddict · 22/12/2018 18:51

I love cheese and eggs, not massively keen on vegan type food (pulses, tofu, hummus etc). I don’t mind it occasionally or as part of a meal but wouldn’t want every day. Could prob live without dairy milk though.

I was pescatarian for a long time and will prob go back to it at some point, at least not bothering to cook meat at home. I’m not a massive meat eater really but DS loves it so I do cook it 1-2 x a week these days. Some meat is delicious but I’m not really an accomplished meat cook - I prefer to cook veggie food.

kateandme · 22/12/2018 18:52

Hogglesballs didn't say its too emotive for me now did i.nope.i just don't agree with using such thing to manipulate the views of others by using their emotions.
