To ask why you aren’t vegan

Whereisthecoffee · 22/12/2018 16:58

I’m not vegan , I know it’s good for the planet kinder to animals etc but it’s something I just can’t seem to get to grips with. I’ve been thinking about starting vegan January but I’m not sure. Thinking about my choices and it’s prevalence in the media has made me curious about others so tell me why aren’t you vegan? I think my main reason is convenience.

I enjoy cheese too much and I often cook with small amounts of dairy. I would find it too hard to give up at the moment although I admire Veganism. I am a vegetarian and am content that I'm doing what I can within my personal limitations.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:52

Life is cruel and nature and survival is brutal

Animals kill one another all the time, you do know about the food chain? It sounds like you don’t

Like I say, I realise it’s unpalatable that we are predators and meat eaters but you are seriously gambling with your health if you don’t accept the fact you need meat to remain healthy

If you really think you can bypass biology, start feeding your dog greens and see how long he lives

TheNinjaWife · 22/12/2018 18:54

I have actually given this a lot of thought. I eat very little animal products. I do like cheese and fillet steak though. And also fish sauce for all my Thai dishes. I could live without everything else.

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 18:55

Have a look at the work by Lierre Keith

She’s an ex-vegan and it’s reallyinteresting

This virtue signalling makes you ill

mydogisthebest · 22/12/2018 18:56

Mooncup, both me and DH have been vegetarian for over 30 years and neither of us have ever had to take any supplements. Neither of us have milk, yoghurt, cream or icecream and I rarely eat cheese.

We are both much healthier than just about everyone we know. I think DH has only ever had 3 colds in all those years and I hardly ever get one. When I worked I was often the only one in the office we didn't get a cold that was going round.

Our B12 levels have been tested at various times, the last time being last month and have always been fine. I have paid to have bone scans as I had a hysterectomy when I was only early 30's and have been told my results are similar to someone much younger.

The vegans I know cook proper varied meals from scratch and none of them take supplements either

canibehereifimnotamum · 22/12/2018 18:57

I did veganuary last January and I eat everything again now but can't drink milk it's purely soya for me now normal milk is vile which is so strange! I will be doing veganuary again in Jan for the month. Vegan food is so delicious I just get abit bored by the end of it but good to give it ago!

anonymousss · 22/12/2018 19:03

@kateandme but vegans are vegans because of their emotions, because they have compassion. What other way do you talk about the cruelty of animals if not using emotions?

mooncuplanding · 22/12/2018 19:04

mydogisthebest

That’s not what the evidence and research shows. You must be an outlier and other factors may be at play....low stress, genetics, clean air, no risk behaviours

So it’s hard to say whether it’s your diet and studies, when controlled for other lifestyle factors, show a very different picture

thefinn · 22/12/2018 19:06

I'd like to be, but dairy is such a big part of my diet as well as fish plus as someone said not keen on being a PITA to cook for. Don't really enjoy meat though.

BrightYellowDaffodil · 22/12/2018 19:10

I'm quite happy to eat vegan meals (and do quite often, and I really like a lot of the meat alternatives like Linda McCartney stuff, Violife cheese etc).

However, I don't believe that eating meat and animal products is wrong as long as it is done humanely which I believe is possible, although I do accept that for some, any form of killing/animal use is wrong. I'm happy to support British farmers who farm to high standards and care for their animals, which is why I limit myself to those products. If I can't eat high-welfare standard meat when I'm out then I'll eat veggie/vegan

user1465335180 · 22/12/2018 19:14

This will go down like a burning Spitfire but I'm not Vegan because I don't want to be one. I enjoy eating meat and dairy products and have an intolerance to too much fibre, also I really dislike Chiilis and peppers which sem to be added to everything to give it more flavour.

Badcat666 · 22/12/2018 19:16

@Hogglesballs

But it's all swings and roundabouts though isn't it?

The same could be said for food fads that are geared towards vegans and vegetarians. Never mind a water crisis in other countries but as long as a vegan has their almond milk it's ok? Never mind that people in other countries can no long afford their staple grain foods because it's being shipped to us as a "superfood"? Destruction of natural forests to grow crops for human, animals and industry use is ok because its not next door to us?

Whatever humans do, it has an impact on this planet and to any other animal species living here. Even being vegan has an impact on the wildlife population that want to eat the crops or fruit grown for a vegan to eat or chew holes in the cotton and hemp they need for their clothing.

So I like eating animals and drinking their milk but I have never had a car and don't travel outside the UK so my carbon footprint is as low as I can get it. I try and buy delicious animal meat and fruit, veg and grains from UK farmers only (and I'm finally feeling well enough for the 1st time in donkeys years to start growing my own fruit and veg again next year) and if I won the lottery I'd move from my pokey little flat to the country with land to raise livestock and veg for me and mine to eat and I would try and use everything from that animal from nose to tail.

brighteyeowl17 · 22/12/2018 19:17

I simply don’t want to be.

Also I get very annoyed at vegan protesters stating everyone in the entire world should be vegan when it is very clearly a choice only those in the developed/privileged world can make. Some people are grateful for any food at all.

Make your own dietary choices, just don’t force them on everyone else.

Etino · 22/12/2018 19:18

@starzig I’m not sure whether you’re 🙄 atme, but it’s my overthought best. 😉

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/12/2018 19:21

Because I'm designed to be an omnivore
Because I enjoy eating a varied diet (including some vegan dishes)
Because I've no intention of giving oxygen to what's becoming a fashionable, silly fad

BMW6 · 22/12/2018 19:22

I am not a vegan nor will ever be one, because | love eating animal flesh. Yum!

BMW6 · 22/12/2018 19:24

Here's a new slogan - Save an Animal - eat a Vegan

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 19:28

You don't have to drink almond milk to be vegan. Or eat avocadoes or bloody quiona.

Yes, whatever humans do causes an impact, but the biggest impact shown by science (not vegans) is animal agriculture.

www.ox.ac.uk/news/2018-06-01-new-estimates-environmental-cost-food

www.theguardian.com/environment/2018/oct/10/huge-reduction-in-meat-eating-essential-to-avoid-climate-breakdown

It's starting to get very urgent now and soon we won't have a choice in eating animal products. Too many rescources used to maintain animals. Eat the direct source, it's not rocket science.

FurryDogMother · 22/12/2018 19:29

Several reasons. If I don't stick to a low carb diet, I get fat. Low carb veganism is joyless. I don't eat processed food (even make my own bacon) because I like to know exactly what I'm eating. If we were to stop farming animals, it doesn't mean that they'd all die at home surrounded by loved ones - nature is cruel, and they'd either get old and die of starvation through being unable to hunt/forage, disease, or by being torn to pieces by a predator.

Having said that, I don't eat that much meat - but I do enjoy eggs, cheese, fish and seafood (and home-cured bacon!). I don't think it'd 'save the planet' (by which we tend to mean save the human race) if I stopped eating animal products. I think I've done my bit for the future of humanity by not having children!

Hogglesballs · 22/12/2018 19:29

Why is everyone saying they are designed to eat meat? We are primates, not cats. What adaptations to eating meat do we have? Canines lol. Our canines are nothing.

FlippinNora1 · 22/12/2018 19:32

Vegan cheese is the work of the devil Envy

We eat mainly veggie, often vegan (but not cheese).
I once made the mistake of joining a vegan Facebook group and admitting I wasn’t 100% vegan. I felt at risk of being burnt at the stake by them (injury of humans doesn’t seem to be an issue with them) Grin

Surfskatefamily · 22/12/2018 19:34

Im happy with eating meat. Also tried vegan diet for a week and felt soooo tired. Doesnt work for me

Flatwhite32 · 22/12/2018 19:36

I'm currently dairy free for my CMPA DD, and I HATE it. People kept saying how amazing I would feel. I have honestly never felt worse. I'm too thin, my skin has got worse (it looks dull) and I'm always hungry, despite eating plenty of protein and healthy fats (e.g. avocado). I miss yoghurt, cheese and real milk. So, being vegan, I would miss dairy and eggs too much. I do make sure we don't eat meat every day though.

Ironfloor269 · 22/12/2018 19:36

I can't even bloody go vegetarian let alone vegan. I love chicken too much. I also like my dairy, especially milk and cream.

DH is vegetarian, for ethical reasons. So I can easily be vegetarian if I wanted to. To be fair, I do eat a lot of vegetarian meals simply because it's easier to cook the same food for the both of us.

Also, the country that I was born in uses hardly any dairy in its cuisine - we primarily use coconut milk in curries - so it's even easier to be be vegan.

BlackeyedGruesome · 22/12/2018 19:40

cheese and milk and eggs. and the occasional chicken dinner.

mostly veggie, some vegan meals, (no they do not have nuts as dd is allergic to them)

cutting back on as many animal products as I can.
