To think you can be fat and happy and have no need to lose any weight

My friend is a secretary, she met her boyfriend at school amd has been with him almost ten years. They own their own home, regular holidays and have a land rover - all they want.

She is one of the happiest people I know. However she's annoyed that several people have suggested she should loose weight. She's classified as morbidly obese and is her mid 20s. No health conditions but she does breath very heavily.

She says that everytime she goes on a diet she's misserable so would rather just be happy and eat what she wants.

So really aibu to think how she is is probably the best for her? And people meaning well shouldn't say anything.

Can you be fat and happy? Well obviously some people are. Personally I hated it but I accept others might feel differently.
As for the health issues, there seems to be more evidence with every new piece of research. It's becoming harder to ignore it, so yes there is a 'need' to lose weight, especially if you are morbidly obese.

Diabetes is affecting more and more people and costing the NHS billions. Being obese is a key factor in developing the condition.

Of course you can be any weight and be happy or unhappy, but it doesn't change the statement above.

Another self inflicted future burden on the NHS. She doesn't have to 'diet' just cut out the crap and exercise more. Diets are never good imo they are not sustainable.

I do wonder if people actually want to keep the NHS. We can't keep hoping it will fix everything for us. What we can do ourselves we should.

I am obese not morbidly obese, approaching 60 and already have pre diabetes, agonising joint problems, super high blood pressure and back problems. So no you cannot be fat and healthy forever, it will catch up with you.
I am off for a gastric band in January paid for my me not the NHS and am looking forward enormously (no pun intended) to losing 5 stone and feeling like a happy healthy human being again. Obesity is so limiting.

Good luck madcatlday

I do think we each have a burden of responsibility for our health and keeping away from the NHS at all costs for the people who have no choice.

A lot of obesity is emotionally and psychologically driven, which needs supporting, like the NHS runs quit smoking clinics.

As a fat and not happy I wish it was that easy to lose weight. I have a mental health condition that I've had councilling for.
I'm an ex bulimic with a huge weight problem. My councilling consisted of oh if you are going to make yourself sick swill your mouth out with milk after Confused
I'm now a binge eater (I am addressing it).
It's shit

Aardvark that's so sad. So sorry to hear you are suffering like this and really hope that your GP can get you some proper help!
