To not pay my TV license?

Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 18:13

Just wondering if anyone else here is part of the TV licence resistance. I’ve never paid for one and I don’t watch live tv, but don’t want them having my details

Surely the fee also goes towards the making of the shows (that you might then watch later)...... Also the radio stations operated by the BBC.

SaucyJack · 20/12/2018 18:19

I don’t need a licence, so I don’t pay for one.

I don’t consider myself to be part of a resistance tho.

theworldistoosmall · 20/12/2018 18:20

As long as you never watch live tv or iplayer then of course you don’t pay.

You don’t pay it on the basis that sometime in the future you may watch something. That’s when you would get a license

I don’t pay for one. I don’t communicate with them. I do t watch live tv or listen to radio. I use Netflix and amazon, and services like Spotify for music

Nicpem1982 · 20/12/2018 18:21

We don't need a tv license either so don't pay for one again dont feel as though we are part of a resistance

YetAnotherUser · 20/12/2018 18:22

I don't have a licence. I don't watch live TV, I did used to use the iPlayer occasionally but stopped once the new rule came in.

I do listen to BBC radio and use the BBC news website, but there's no fee for that so it's all good.

peakSafeSpace · 20/12/2018 18:25

You're aren't part of a weird resistance if you don't need a licence.

What details do you think you're withholding? Name and address?

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 18:26

I don’t need a licence so I don’t pay for it. I just fill a form in online every 2years or so when they remind me, declaring I don’t need one. It’s hardly a resistance is it?

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 18:28

Surely the fee also goes towards the making of the shows (that you might then watch later)......

I’m paying for them via my Netflix subscription. You don’t think BBC is giving the rights to stream them for free do you? They also show them all over the world. It has a much wider distribution network then the BBC.

SinglePringle · 20/12/2018 18:29

I fucking love the BBC, the fact it’s advert free and happily pay the license that funds hours of radio and some brilliant innovative television.

Having a TV station that’s not beholden to advertisers is something we should protect.

Lana1234 · 20/12/2018 18:29

I don’t have one because I don’t need one. I fill in a form online stating why I don’t need one every couple of years and I never hear from them tbh

Butchyrestingface · 20/12/2018 18:30

If you don't need a licence, how are you part of a "resistance"? Do you watch iPlayer?

I don't need a TV licence because I don't have a TV set up and I don't watch iPlayer. If either of those things change, I will purchase one.

SaucyJack · 20/12/2018 18:32

That’s great for you Single, and those who also love BBC are welcome to carry on paying their licence fee.

But you don’t get to insist other people fund your choice of media platform tho.

AutoFilled · 20/12/2018 18:35

@SinglePringle there is no ads on Netflix or amazon prime video either. It’s great you like the BBC, I don’t.

cariadlet · 20/12/2018 18:38

Fair enough not to pay if you never watch BBC TV (either live or on iPlayer) and never listen to BBC radio.

Bit ridiculous to say that you're part of the TV licence resistance. I don't buy clothes from Next and have never given them any money. Does that make me part of the Next resistance?

Personally I'm very happy to pay for my license. I have Netflix and Prime Video but still watch plenty of BBC programmes, listen to BBC radio every day, subscribe to loads of BBC podcasts and use the BBC website a lot. Dd find BBC bitesize very useful for revision.

If you work out how much the licence costs per day then I think it's really good value. If you look at the way TV has gone in the US ( news dominated by Fox News etc) then that underlines the need to support public service broadcasting.

SinglePringle · 20/12/2018 18:45

@autofilled ok Confused

theworldistoosmall · 20/12/2018 18:47

It’s only good value if you use the service. Even when I did have live tv I never watched anything on the Beeb channels.

For Netflix and amazon it costs me £10.99 a month
License is £12.99 a month.
I will keep my £2 a month thanks and continue with the good value programming I subscribe to.

Littlefrog99 · 20/12/2018 18:47

I haven't bought a TV licence for 10 years. Google 'tv licence withholding implied right of access' and you'll find further information as well as letter templates. I have never had a visit from anyone from the BBC since I sent my first letter a decade ago, just a letter every 3 years checking if I've changed my mind.

MakeAHouseAHome · 20/12/2018 18:56

I actuly made a post about that on the telly fprum.

First time home buyers, bought a tv license on 18th Dec. Got an email saying it expires 30th Nov 2019. Phoned up and said where on earth is my extra 18 days... fed some cock and bull about that being how TV Licenses work.

Only bought it for sodding NYE fireworks. Will never buy one again.

CherrySherbert · 20/12/2018 18:58

I also don't have one and don't need one. Hardly a resistance.

hmmhohmmm · 20/12/2018 19:00

Wait what? 😲

How do I not need a lisence? I won't get one if I can have a telly and no lisence

theworldistoosmall · 20/12/2018 19:06

As long as you don’t watch tv as it’s aired or iplayer you do t need a license.

Although called tv license you can own a tv or several and not require a license as long as the above counts.

Hence I pay for Netflix and amazon which provides me with my viewing requirements and no license needed.

busybarbara · 20/12/2018 19:08

This sounds like the height of tightness to me. Pay your fair share

Neverender · 20/12/2018 19:10

Declare that you don't watch TV (if you don't) and WOIRA. It's simple. It doesn't have to be dramatic...

hmmhohmmm · 20/12/2018 19:10

But I know someone who did get fined for not having a lisence

I don't think the telly was on so how did they know when they checked?

Neverender · 20/12/2018 19:11

Or pay it if you do. Or risk prosecution. A court fine and potentially a criminal record for non-payment of court fines (if you don't pay).
