To not pay my TV license?

Spaghettibol · 20/12/2018 18:13

Just wondering if anyone else here is part of the TV licence resistance. I’ve never paid for one and I don’t watch live tv, but don’t want them having my details

OP posts:
TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 19:49

I’m not annoyed at the people btw; more at tv licensing and particularly enforcement for hoping to capitalise on confusion.

greendale17 · 20/12/2018 19:49

Also I don’t support the bbc after the pedo ring

^Riiiiight

PengAly · 20/12/2018 19:58

People please do your research before giving the OP advice. You DO NOT NEED a tv license unless you watch Live tv or BBC iplayer. Simple.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/12/2018 20:08

OP advice. You DO NOT NEED a tv license unless you watch Live tv or BBC iplayer. Simple.

OP has said she does watch it so she needs to pay and not try to find an excuse not to. Simple.

BeanTownNancy · 20/12/2018 20:12

OP, if you really disagree with the BBC then stop using their services. Ever. It's that simple.

You're not a martyr standing up for a cause, you're just being a CF.

PengAly · 20/12/2018 20:21

@PigletWasPoohsFriend the mocking was unnesesarily rude. I was giving her facts so she would know she does need to pay

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 20/12/2018 20:23

@PengAly telling posters to do their research is unnecessarily rude tbh.

WhatsUpHun · 20/12/2018 20:25

but don’t want them having my details yeah, ok, whatever

PengAly · 20/12/2018 20:25

@PigletWasPoohsFriend no its really not. Posters shouldnt be giving incorrect facts

CrabbyPatty · 20/12/2018 20:26

I think what OP needs to understand is that it is not reasonable to refuse to pay on the basis that she uses the service rarely. I only go to M&S occasionally, should I just nick a box of biscuits? Do whatever, but if you get caught its your problem.

WhatsUpHun · 20/12/2018 20:27

so you do watch it? then you are stealing

PengAly · 20/12/2018 20:30

Personally i think the TV licence is a bit expensive for what it is, as the money mainly just goes to the BBC but its a legal requirement to pay it so if you use the service then you should. If you do not want to pay it then do not use the service

Neverender · 20/12/2018 20:31

PigletWasPoohsFriend and friends.. you need a TV licence if you watch or record live tv as it's being broadcast. It's really, really simple.

PengAly · 20/12/2018 20:39

I know people who have been fined when they didn’t even watch live tv or bbc iplayer and declared online that they didn’t. Once they have your name and details they can do anything

Ok no way is this true. The people you know who got fined would have been watching live tv or bbc iplayer. They cant legally be fined if they werent Confused also them having your details is not some big brother thing

Pootle40 · 20/12/2018 20:43

I can't believe how many people don't pay for a TV licence. Can anyone just claim they don't watch live tv? So if I record bbc programmes in my sky box but never watch them 'live' I don't need to have one. Eh?!

AGHHHH · 20/12/2018 20:45

Resistance?

You either need one or you don't. That's all.

Vitalogy · 20/12/2018 20:47

The tv licence is in it's death throes. The concept is out dated and not viable in the day and age. I do not pay this fee. Want the BBC, pay for it. Don't expect others that have no interest in it to fund it.

AGHHHH · 20/12/2018 20:47

So if I record bbc programmes in my sky box but never watch them 'live' I don't need to have one. Eh?!

Your TV and Sky Box would be connected to an aerial surely and to record the shows it would have to be on somehow and either way it counts, so yes, you do have to pay for that.

GimmeGimmeHellYeah · 20/12/2018 20:52

If you watch or record live tv you need a licence. If you watch BBC iPlayer you need a licence.
It's not frigging difficult.

anniehm · 20/12/2018 20:52

As long as you never watch live tv not iPlayer then you legally don't need a licence however if you watch even on catch up on iPlayer you by law need a licence, it's how the programme making is funded including radio

WhatsUpHun · 20/12/2018 20:53

I agree with you, but its still a 'pay for service' and those who do not pay and use it are stealing

TwiceMagic · 20/12/2018 20:56

@Pootle40 You’d need a license to do that as you’re still recording live tv.

Lots of people don’t actually need tv licenses. I really do not have any desire to watch (or record) live tv ever again. Nor do I care about iplayer.

Coldshoulders · 20/12/2018 21:04

I found this thread quite interesting actually. Those who watch BBC and don't pay tv licence are stealing? Ha ok then you pay for your tv then you pay for your sky or whatever then you pay for your electric and you are expected to pay tv licence on top of that? And if you don't your stealing? I was under the impression that it's not a criminal offence to not have a licence?🤔 like the police don't come and arrest you and charge u because it's not even a law it's some bullshit the BBC try to put on you. I paid my tv licence over a year in advance through dd. Got a letter saying I had paid up until a certain date so I cancelled my dd as I felt I had paid well over a year in advance and didn't need to keep paying until the next year. They cancelled the licence I had already paid for! Then I decided they can fuck right off and removed their implied right of access to my home haven't heard from them since. Most people can't afford to pay it and why should you even have to? Stealing ha never heard so much crap in all my life if you feel you need to pay for one feel free but I feel it's stupid. All BBC can do is their own investigation (not a police one) so why bother paying them anything when we pay for our tv our electric and our sky as it is. Only programme BBC have going is eastenders and that's not even worth the watch x

badlydrawnperson · 20/12/2018 21:09

er.....ok then Grin

Neverender · 20/12/2018 21:11

From here: www.stepchange.org/debt-info/tv-licence-fines.aspx

It’s a criminal offence to watch live TV or use BBC iPlayer unless you have a valid TV licence. Without one you risk prosecution and can be issued a fine of up to £1,000, plus court costs

It's REALLY not difficult to understand. Ignore at your peril and get a fine and risk prosecution.
